Title: [Contest] My First Quantum Translocator
Post by: leafy on November 26, 2011, 02:28:53 pm
A port of the critically acclaimed Flash game.

Since JustCause handed the project over to me, I've been working on porting this for the Cemetech Contest #8. Things are going pretty well, and I've got about half of the engine done with. I'm currently working on platform collisions, and will have updates once I have them ^^

Looking pretty cool so far :)

The background looks a bit weird tho, maybe make the lines more regular or something?

I like the background, you shouldn't change it :D

Very cool! I'm sure it'll do well if you have the time to get a sizable chunk of it completed by the deadline. :)

I love the background. Sad to see JustCause cancelled it (although I blame his parents for nearly killing it about 3 times), but I'm happy he handed it to someone else and that it's being continued. :D

I plan to get all of it done - and then some ^^

He didn't cancel it, I just asked him and he said ok. He was still planning on doing it, but I stole it from him D:

Looks nice.

Small nitpick: maybe you want to take a look at the drawing code for the sprite you have there: there's some white-space lag. I don't know how to explain it, but watch the screenie really closely and you'll see.

Nice effects, btw. Also I like the background. I was going to suggest using something other than just pure b/w blocks too (You'd have to use masked sprites though)

I think most of the char is supposed to be white, except the white is seen as transparent on white and doesn't effect the bg, with the black part a sort of helmet visor or something.
(like the original sprite: http://cellardoorgames.com/blog/?page_id=326 )

And somehow he's already one-upped my version. Epic work, Leafy. :)

That screenshot looks awesome. When I first saw it, I was amazed first by the background, which gives it a sort of spacey feel. The background effects (you know, those white lines thing) gives it more of a science-y feel. When I saw the particles and noted the different colors given what is being done with them, I knew that... someone... was paying extra close attention to detail :)

I enjoyed playing the original flash game, and given what I see here, this is something I'm hoping to see finished in the near future.

I've fined tuned all the motions, and implemented the bouncy platforms. I have yet to get the platforms fully working, but I'm attempting to cannibalize Zedd for my own purposes ^^

okay I pretty much have no idea what's going on in that screenie, having never played the flash game (I will, sometime), but it looks awesome.

EDIT: K, I think I got it now.

Funny enough, the other day I told DJ how awesome MFQT was by JosJuice. Good to see it revived, even if not by him. Good luck!

EDIT: JustCause, not JosJuice.

I'm not sure I'm liking the background, it makes the whole screen cluttered in my opinion.  That and the random particles streaming across the screen just seem unnecessary and distracting to me.  Also, I see the player has a white portion of him, but since he's on a mostly white background, he just looks like a floating block.  Good job getting the moving platforms working though, hope you can iron out all the other bugs you were having with them ^^

I realize the background is cluttered, but I don't know how to make it fit in with the original color scheme of the game while still making it look nice in grey D:

anyways, death animation.

Wow, that looks amazing.  I'd go with the gray; it looks incredible.  Also, I don't think you need the particles streaming across in the background.  I actually think I'd like it better without. :/

I'm glad someone's picking this up again.

My First Quantum Translocator
Cemetech Contest 8 Entry (leafy)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EGRESS:
1) Transfer MFQT.8xp to your calculator.
2) Run with your favorite shell.
3) Were you expecting more?

This game is only compatible with 15MHz calculators. Sorry, 83-users, but this is the future! (don't kill me :( )

NOTE:
This is not a finished product. Far from it, actually.
I was initially planning on adding text to the game for this release, but it proved to be too unwieldy for me to package in this beta. I'll finish it eventually, but not for this contest.

In addition, I've held out giving you guys the ending. Don't hate on me for doing this, but I want something for everybody to look forwards to in the next update.

ADDENDUM:
Because text was not included with the game, the administration has instructed me to include the controls here:

Left, Right : Move
Up : Jump
2nd : Place a shadow
Mode : Translocate
Alpha : Tele-jump (shhhhh...)

ADDENDUM ADDENDUM:
The last two levels are currently broken. Please make no attempt to solve them.
Actually, you can, but my collision engine has bugs. Unauthorized activity will result in you being randomly crushed against a wall.

ADDENDUM ADDENDUM ADDENDUM:
The administration has also instructed me to tell you that the spiky thing in that seemingly empty room is a save point. Don't waste your time trying to avoid it, all it does is fragment your soul.

ADDENDUM ADDENDUM ADDENDUM ADDENDUM:
For those of you who like cheating. Or just can't figure it out. Or are too unintelligent to.
(Did those words deter you?)
Press + to skip to the next level.
(You horrible person)

CREDITS ADDENDUM:
Kenny and Teddy Lee (Creators of original Flash game)
Cellar Door Games (cellardoorgames.com)
Newgrounds (sponsors)

Congrats Leafy! Also I'm glad this game is finally finished. I was sad when JustCause's clone of MFQT died a few years ago. :( (thanks to several mem clears from parents).

And yeah upload it once done so we can play. :D So far I've tried HOMER-16 entry and downloaded Ashbad's and I'm looking forward to try the rest. :)

Ok I tried it and it's really great O.O. One thing, though: Is that supposed to happen?  (I'm talking about the extremely high jump)

That's one of the glitches I was talking about with Builder - did you jump and then hit alpha at the same time?

Then I've succeeded in bringing over that particular element of the game :D
Title: Re: [Contest] My First Quantum Translocator
Post by: LincolnB on February 26, 2012, 06:24:47 pm
haha if pixel-precision is what you're going for...personally I'm not too fond of that particular element but I guess it fits the game.
Title: Re: [Contest] My First Quantum Translocator
Post by: leafy on February 26, 2012, 09:53:56 pm
IIRC, none of the levels require pixel-precision. Maybe you're going about it the wrong way? :D
Title: Re: [Contest] My First Quantum Translocator
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 26, 2012, 09:57:03 pm
The first few levels were not very hard even without the ALPHA+2nd glitch. I guess at one point it gets particularly hard but it seemed reasonable to me.
Title: Re: [Contest] My First Quantum Translocator
Post by: LincolnB on February 27, 2012, 03:55:15 pm
Hm. For some reason, coming back to the game after having gone through it once (using the '+' deal to advance about 5 levels) it's not so bad. Maybe I was just impatient the first time around.

I'm gonna get around to trying this(and many other things eventually). I guess it needs 15Mhz for speed huh? Good thing I have a few 15 Mhz models. =)
