Title: [Contest] ZAMPO
Post by: cooliojazz on June 27, 2012, 01:17:26 pm
Okay, I finally fell like my project has enough progress that I might finish it on time, so... Here we go!

ZAMPO (Zombies Are My Plus One)
"...In the year 2015, the scientist Yarlton Pachanco discovered a way to resuscitate dead bodies with a virus that took over the host and forced it to act as a primitive animal as to survive and benefit the virus, becoming creatures although not truly alive, were definitely  not dead.  He termed them, appropriately enough, "zombies."  For a while, they were tested for the extent of their functionality, the extent of the virus, (which luckily enough, could only infect a victim whose immune system is basically non-existent, or gone, any decent one could easily wipe it out), and other interesting things.  But the more Yarlton saw, the more he was convinced that there was something behind their bestial demeanor.  Maybe it was the virus somehow unlocking some small part of the dead's brain, or maybe it really had a mind of it's own, but whatever the cause, he realized he had accidentally created some new life form with at least a bit of intelligence.  So Yarlton began campaigning for the recognition of zombies as beings alongside "normal" humans.  Of course, most major religions immediately launched a counter-campaign against something which appeared to bring the dead back to life with science, and wanted to recognize them as such, and the CDC smeared the campaign with the fear of wide spread zombieism.  It didn't matter how many times Yarton and his fellow scientists found ways to prove that it couldn't infect the living, they couldn't stop the CDC from mapping out the apocalypse starting from the time zombies were allowed out of a lab setting.  Yarlton became enraged with the amount of opposition he received, and started spending more and more time hiding deep in his lab.  He started developing plans for strange buildings, and improvements for the zombies which started causing the other scientists to become very concerned for him and his sanity.  They would query if he was okay, and he would just push past grumbling, "Yeah yeah, fine, whatever.  I need to get back to work."  Eventually, they all couldn't take it any more, and he was left alone, just him and the zombies, as he put the finishing touches on his plan.  "If they won't willingly accept you," he addressed the zombies, "I'll force them to.  Even if it takes making them all zombies too!"..."

Haha, yeah, I haven't been working on a lot of cal stuff lately, probably the most TI thing I've been working on before this is TFE =P  And yeah, I totally thought of that title, and I'm like, "OMG, that would be perfect for a game name! Now how the hell  would a game with a title like that be?" =P So then I wrote that storyline to fit.  And the one thing I will say now before I finish up everything for a real post about the game is that it's a sort of RTS where, as you can probably gather, you play as the zombies taking over the world.

This is a pleasantly surprisingly original and creative storyline with zombies - something I haven't seen a whole lot of. Good luck!

Steps to creating a zombie army:
1. Equip zombies with buckets.
2. Tell the zombies to find dead bodies lying around and bring them back to your Darf (Dead Acceptance and Repair Facility).
3. Send those dead bodies to the nearest Viec (Virus Induction and Equipment Center) to get some feisty attack zombies.
4. ? ? ?
5. Profit.
6. (Optional step) Abuse some of those extra bodies not yet turned zombie in the Yarl (Yarlton's Awesome Research Lab) to make your zombies even better at turning the rest of the world like them.

There's another little something =P I've really been wanting to post a screenshot, but I want to get a certain thing working correctly first before I do, haha.

Way later than I wanted, but a couple screenshots. These showcase the viec, which auto-spawns units as you have the bodies (its a harvester viec), harvesters, which are collecting the dead, and a plain zombie, which is attacking the harvesters (Just for testing, obviously not what really happens =P), and a couple other things such as auto-targeting, target lines, etc.  It'll be close, and definitely not the full version that I envision, but we'll see if i can get a good enough version for the contest.

Looks good, what kind of game elements does it have? It looks similar to something like Starcraft (at least in terms of gameplay).

Thanks guys! =D
It does similar, as much as all RTSes look fairly similar =P  Game elements, I guess there's the 3 building which I mentioned in the previous post, (Viec, Darf, Yarl), a few types of zombies (harvester, melee, ranged?, ...), and I haven't really decided on the data for the enemies yet as I've been focusing on finishing the engine, but probably marine type units or something, there will be a couple types of those too.  Anything else you're looking for in terms of elements? =P
EDIT: Also, if you guys were wondering, the number left corner is the approximate FPS

It looks nice, however; I'd suggest speeding up the zombies and harvesters a bit.

So now that the contest is over anyone who wants to try to optimize things enough so you can actually have 50 units on the screen without it dropping to 1-2fps, I would love you forever.  I am going to finish this soon, but I'm taking a break, then the fps is probably the biggest thing right now, most of the other stuff is adding data, or changing it.

do you know what exactly is causing it to slow down?  It is the mapper, the unit handling, the calculations?

It's about 80% unit calculations I'd guess.  The mapper/drawing stuff is pretty fast, although i'm sure it could be a bit faster too.
