Well, while I'm NOT stuck in RandC development right now, I feel I have to be doing another small project at the same time so I won't get bored with it and decide to quit. That's actually how I can motivate myself, by keeping doubly busy :D
So this is a basic platformer where there are like 50 levels where you have to collect 3 gems and beat a miniboss before you can beat the real boss and escape. I might have something later on it, but maybe not. Just want to tell you guys that the other project si out there, but 80% of my progrmming time still goes to Rule and Conquer ;)
-
I totally get your motivation. I'm doing the same thing with MFQT and my hyper-secret project.
Looking forward to it!
-
thanks, might have some demo or just a screenie later on, but I'd say this is like 1% in the works right now :3
while the platforming engine will be simple and crap, most of the developing will probably be creating good levels
-
while the platforming engine will be simple and crap, most of the developing will probably be creating good levels
How life works, XD I'll do levels if you like.
-
Sounds promising, I can't wait to see some screenshots :)
-
40% done with platforming engine O.o
-
Cool to see progress :)
-
actually, your motivation system works. My problem is that I keep busy doing schoolwork. :P
-
wow, I'm like 90% done with the engine O.o
That was fast if I do say so myself :D
Here's what I've got in it so far:
-many different normal blocks
-one way and flase blocks
-keys and locks
-a jumping and physics engine (took the most time :P)
-LADDERS :D :D :D
-blocks that kill you
That's it so far, but then it's for setting fuses and stuff (I'll explain later)
I'll try to attach the demo when I get home, in about 45 minutes
-
update with screenie and program:
-
Wow, it looks impressive! Great work.
Edit: Is it pure Asm or Axe compiled?
-
thanks, though it only took like 2.5 hours to do, 1.5 of the hours for the jumping O.o
-
nice job! that looks really cool! btw, could you PM me with your current source? I want to learn something from it. ;) don't worry, I won't steal you code. :P
-
sure :D will take a minute though I need to use Ticonnet on my computer which deosn't have internet, and usb it over ;)
-
Looks awesome :D I especially like the single directional tiles ^^
-
thanks, those took some weird coding regime I official have dubbed "Conditional sub-exceptions" :P dubbed it just now
-
sure :D will take a minute though I need to use Ticonnet on my computer which deosn't have internet, and usb it over ;)
sure, I can wait. ;) thanks.
-
The code is pretty messy unless you're me and know it very well, so go to the label called .FUNCTIONS near the bottom where you'll find the map drawing, player and HUD drawing routines. And yes, that repeat has like 5k of code in it ;)
All that speed without a Full instruction! In fact, I had to slow it down considerably O.o
-
don't worry, I'm just going to have a look at the engine since I always wondered on how to make those effeciently. ;)
-
Wow ASHBAD looks great, really pumped out that engine fast. Oh and I second the awesomeness of those directional tiles
-
thanks, I'm probably more amazed at my speed than you guys are -- usually that would take a week for me to do :o
Thanks for the compliments guys! The engine is structured mostly, but I still have many tricks up my sleeve for the tiles and such ;)
...and of course, real levels :P
NEW EDIT:
Wow, it looks impressive! Great work.
Edit: Is it pure Asm or Axe compiled?
It's compiled Axe :D
I would have done it Asm but I wanted to focus more on the great gameplay than technical issues :P
-
wait, why did I see a post saying "h"
-
Accident of mine, I tried to edit my earlier one and I accidentally did that :P
-
Just tried the demo. Pretty awesome!
Keep up the good work. ;)
-
Looking cool. Keep up the good work.
-
Thanks! I plan to go far on it ;)
NEW UPDATES (no program/screenies though):
-1ups
-lava
-water w/ currents
-and some more cool things as well :D
-
dude, you have got to be the fastest coder ever. :D
-
really? I'm wouldn't say quite that --you should see lolzer123 behind a 84+ ;)
EDIT: ^ probably more of an inside joke now that I realize it ^
well, I've just done SO MUCH PROGRAMMING in summer 2010 that I hit the record of an average of about 4-5 hours a day O.o
I think I learned from that summer how to get more efficient, though RandC isn't really showing it :(
-
That looks nice and interesting! You might want to make sure it won't run too fast, because in the screenshot, you seemed to have an hard time jumping at certain places.
Accident of mine, I tried to edit my earlier one and I accidentally did that :P
That happens often ;D (I saw the trash bin section of the forums, hehe :P)
And wow, I'm glad I'm not alone to ever have coded 4-5 hours a day in average, before. :D
-
this platformer is blockdude with gravity and special tiles. i like it =D

yeah, i remember when things were like that. during my last math class of the previous school year i succeeded in making a simple phoenix/like space shooter with a scrolling background in one hour(think pugluna, but less polished and much worse graphics).
since then, though, things got busy. the last time i wrote a line of code was a month ago o_0
good luck on this(and on keeping yourself busy)!
-
thanks, it reminds me of blockdude too :D
so anyways, I'll put a finished Alpha up later today, have to finish a proper demo level's design first :D
final updates:
there are new things to this game; before there were just blocks and keys, now there's also bombs, kegs, and torches. There are one each per level, and once you have all three you can go past breakable rocks. There's also the gem -- you need to get it and put it in it's respective door, and you beat the level. Sounds complex, eh? :D
Also, new tiles: spikes, improved one way blocks (now 3 directions), 1ups, and a few other pleasant things ;)
I hope you guys will enjoy the aplha I'll put up later today :D
-
The GIF seems nice. Is the game in Calculator as slow as the GIF?
-
No, it's MUCH faster :D
EDIT: and scoutdavid, you should try it, it's actually pretty fun :D
-
This is really cool Ashbad! Great job. :) I can't wait for the Alpha. ;D
-
Thanks, might be until tomorrow morning till I post it though -- level designing is taking a LOONNG time, as a 60x60 level is pretty massive O.o At least methinks
-
Ugh, level designing x.x, I hate that part sometimes. Sometimes I feel in a map making mood, but most of the time I just can't stand it X.x
Good luck!
-
I love the map making, I've been waiting for the time I could finally do this :D
I mean, it's annoying at times, but so far it's cool in pyyrix :D
-
Ah good to hear, then :)
Just make sure to backup often. :P
-
I'm at a robotics thingie right now. I'll upload the alpha soon in about 1 hour I guess. Still need to finish transfering drawn level to game.
Sorry about my bad spelling, I'm on a friends laptop with horrible keyboard :(
-
Well, here it is: The pyyrix ALPHA! :D
NOTE: new mechanics: there are 4 new ITEMS. These are the bomb, keg, torch, and gem. Once you get the first three, you can go through certain types of rocks to continue on in the level. To win, you need to collect the gem and put it in the gem door. Included is the program and the appvar level (the appvar MUST reside in RAM for this to work)
This level is actually hard for people unfamiliar to Pyyrix's mechanics (everybody but me :P) and I doubt you can beat it in less than 50 tries. I however, can beat it in 1 shot :P
And that's after making it easier for you guys to actually be able to get used to the gameplay so you'll be able to do much harder levels in the future :D
Well, enjoy!
-
Very nice! (and hard!) I noticed a bug though, but it doesn't actually affect gameplay. (look at my screenie.)
Review:
Difficulty: 10/10 hard enough to keep me bust for a couple of weeks. ;)
Effort: The author obviously put a lot of effort in this game! Partly because I know he coded it for 5 hours today. :P
Replay Value: Haven't really gone far enough yet. but probably a 9-10/10
Speed: 10/10 well, its Axe, what do you expect?
Controls: 9/10 logical, but they are quite sensitive. ;)
Graphis: 9/10 the tiles look great! the character could do with some slight modifying. ;)
Overall: 9.5/10 Great game so far! :D
the bug is that when you go down that first downward ladder, and you come back up, the top row of blocks dissappear, it doesn't really matter thoguh. Great Game! ;)
EDIT: yes, I suck at it. :P
-
Nice to see an alpha. I'll try it soon. However, from the screenshot, key response seems too sensitive, you might want to add some delay between the first left/right keypress when not in the air. Nice level so far, it seems, by the way. :) Keep up the good work!
-
Here's the appvar level fixed up in certain spots, nearer to the gem due to some difficulty problems (no, up to the torch is fine ;))
Please if you download the first download, get this one too if you actually want to beat the level.
-
Overall: 9.5/20 Great game so far! :D
:P
-
What do you not like? The graphics? The idea? ???
...the difficulty? ;)
EDIT: ooh I see squidget, yunhua put that there by mistake, you didn't edit it in :D
lol
-
lol yeah, no I wasn't dissing your game at all. It looks good so far; are you planning to add smoothscroll?
-
Maybe later on, I might :)
-
Smooth scrolling would be nice. :D
-
This is very cool. Great job Ashbad! ;D
-
oops, sorry about that, I fixed it. ;)
btw, I never actually asked permission, but do you mind if I use part of your engine for a possible game?
-
Yeah I saw that you might be using it on that ClrHome productions site. Knock yourself out with it :D. Not literally though :P
Well, after pyyrix is done (hopefully this week), I've been thinking these three words for a new project (besides RandC, which I need a rather long hiatus from to get motivated again :P): Calculator Port, 2D, and Minecraft.
-
Hmm I am curious what will be the other project. Minecraft 2D calc port? I hope RandC and Pyrix won't end up dormant for too long, though :(.
-
Hmm I am curious what will be the other project. Minecraft 2D calc port? I hope RandC and Pyrix won't end up dormant for too long, though :(.
I'mn back to work on RandC, and I might even post pyyrix's BETA later today (yes, I already have 5 whole levels :D)
The minecraft thing will most definately be a small pet project like this pyyrix thing and won't take more than a week to make, but RandC shall be developed at the same time still ;)
-
Ah cool to hear :D.
-
OK, here's the BETA:
but, before you download, read these notes:
1. To play the game, you can have the program PYYRIX archived, but the level you are on (i.e. if the title says you're on level one) you need that appvar level UNARCHIVED. You will also need an additional 3600 bytes of free RAM to play, if you do not have that RAM available, then you will be greeted with a level of random RAM.
2. There are actually 4 levels -- I deleted the 5th because it was very challenging but the level design was horrible. YOU DO NOT NEED ALL 4 UNARCHIVED AT THE SAME TIME, unless you want them to be. All you need unarchived is the current level.
3. I have tested this game almost 100 times now -- and no crashes yet. I am letting you go at your own risk to play this BETA, I am not responsible for any calculator damages (though, I would be surprised if ANYTHING of that sort happens)
Also, if you can't figure out the themes for the levels for some reason, here's what they're supposed to be based on:
Lv.1: A beginner's course, in some ways similar to Mario, but with a twist.
Lv.2: You were locked in a tower-prison for your last thieving on level one by the king of the land. Show him who's boss by escaping and stealing his country's most valuable gems.
Lv.3: After you steal from the castle, you get caught in a dungeon below ground. But of course, you decide to look for rare gems while thinking of an escape.
Lv.4: You escaped the dungeon, but were promptly greeted by a band of master thieves. Hearing of your most excellent expeditions and daring steals, they bring you to your hardest test yet -- finding a gem in the heart of an Ice cave.
And those are the levels for now! ENJOY! :D
(and leave feedback as well btw)
Also, can someone make me a screenie of the game in action please? ;) Wabbit refuses to work on my vista comp.
-
can you upload everything separately, since wabbit doesn't send groups?
-
ok I just modified the last post which contains a zip file -- inside is the separate appvars and progs ;)
-

DOwnload...
-
thanks. by the way, there's a bug i found. when climbing a ladder, if you keep going up into a solid tile, you'll immerse into the tile. also, is there a way to compress the appvars? and it's a little sensitive, but otherwise i like it.
-
Awesome platformer, hard to play on WabbitEmu, played a bit of the first level, this is the only level?
-

I just found that bug :(
And I'll try some compression technique before pyyrix goes gold.
Awesome platformer, hard to play on WabbitEmu, played a bit of the first level, this is the only level?
nope, there's 4 levels ;)
Their respective to their names -- PYLV1, PYLV2, etc.
The first level is kind of a practice, there's NO WAY you can even try the other levels till you beat that one ;)
-
Wow, this is wonderful. I really, really like this game. Great job Ashbad! ;D
One question: Why do I land on top of the key thing instead of obtaining it?
Yes, you can haz screenie. ^-^
Edit: Can you add a checkpoint system please? :D
-
OMG! It is even better than I thought. Those levels seems pretty big, I like it. Kinda like a cross between Mario and Block Dude. I'm getting this as soon as possible :D!
-
One suggestion: DiagnosticOff :P. It'll get rid of the run indicator :)
-
Wow, this looks cool! I'll try it out as soon as TI Connect stops being an uncooperative whiny *stream of expletives* fffffffffff.
Level design offer is still out there.
-
Nice! It almost reminds me of block dude :P I like the jump system, most platformers without smooth scrolling don't have that.
-
Ztrumpet: I'll add inn some code on the final release so that yuo can land on top of keys and still get them :P
for now, all you can do is pick it up by going left/ right.
Glad to see people likez my gamez!
-
Ztrumpet: I'll add inn some code on the final release so that yuo can land on top of keys and still get them :P
I noticed it for bombs too. ;)
-
yeah,it's like that for all pick-up-able items :(
Also: did anyone manage to beat level 1 yet?
-
I tried it but I couldn't get past the spikes part. Also I found a bug when climbing ladders: I could get inside blocks above.
-
yeah,it's like that for all pick-up-able items :(
Also: did anyone manage to beat level 1 yet?
I did, but I'm still on level two... I did hack through the PYSTATS appvar just to see all the levels, though. ;)
-
yep, pretty easy right now -- though I have an idea for encrytion later though :P
How did you like the levels?
My favorite in design -- level 2 :D
-
Yeah, I like level 2 as well, but I'm stuck at the part where you enter the spiked-filled tower and collect the item near the top. Then, I don't know where to go, as it looks like the gem is on the next floor, but I can't get up there and I don't think there's a way out of the tower by going back the way you came in...
-
I have an idea: a level with extra gravity, but with spikes on the roof, so you have to watch out too much gravity you hit the spikes.
Cool, hein?
The last screenie is very good, congratzz!
-

At the top of the tower, all you have to worry about the first time is getting the Keg. Later, once you have the bomb, keg and torch, you can climb up the tower again to get to the beginning area (blocked off by explodable rocks). Then, go across to the top of the tower, where you can get the gem. I forgot where I put the gem door in the level, though :P
still have probs? post a screeny then, I think I had probs too, but eventually beat the level during tests.
-
I noticed the explodable blocks, and I brought the torch and bomb with me to get the keg. I guess I just missed the way back out. If I still can't get it, I'll post a screenie.
-
ok, that sounds fair ;)
The first time up the tower, it's hard, but after that it gets much easier. The tower is the only difficulty of the level, but it's pretty annoying I'm sure :P
-
Wow...this looks epic. Great job.
Will send to calc as soon as possible.
Umm...what.
I run it, it says
Pyyrix's...advanture
Press 2nd to continue
So I press 2nd, and the whole screen is just screwed up.
EDIT: it doesn't like having too little RAM, apparently--I had something like 8000 free.
But it works now.
-
yeah it does that every now and then -- hopefully I can make it check for the right conditions in the 1.0 release ;)
Also: do you like it so far?
BTW, new ideas of what to add to levels 5 and after.
NEW ITEMS! Such as:
-Boots to walk on water
-Bucket o' water to change lava to rock
-knife to kill stationary NCPs (far strech, but hey this game IS experimental :P)
-Another type of lock/key
-ANTIGRAV-BOOTS
...do you guys like any of the ideas? I think most if not all of them could be easily implemented.
-
I love the new items ideas. It's really turning out to be a great game!
-
Cool.
I can't wait! ;D
-
This game is one of those that will stay on my calc for a long time, and I'm kind of picky about my games :P
Pyyrix is great.
Another idea:
Can you add a checkpoint system please? :D
^Yes. I get to the top of the level, die somehow or another, then have to restart from the beginning.
Also, the movement kind of has the same minor problem as Splut did at first--you just move too fast.
Maybe different difficulty levels, running at different speeds because of a Pause?
Other than that, I can see where this can go, and where it is now, and I'm amazed by both. Keep it up!
-
Well, I'll make 2 different difficulties: shoplifter (easy), crook (medium), and thief (hard)
in easy, there will be a "checkpoint system" that when you die, you start at the beginning, but yuo keep all items and keys you got and things you unlocked are still unlocked; also movement is slower. In medium, you move at normal speed but there's still checkpoints.
In hard, it's much more sensitive than it is right now, and no checkpoints.
Also: added in water, with some difficulty but also made walk-on-water boots to go with that. ;)
@finaleTI:
I looked at level 2: you're right, there an area that's nearly impossible. I fixed that up and I'll post it probably later today, in a 0.2 BETA.
Also, one last announcement:
The final version of Pyyrix will include 10 full levels, and also a built in level creator where you can make up to 3 custom levels! They will also be exportable so you can post them online for other people to download too.
-
About checkpoints, if you restart at the beginning, make sure that if the level got movable blocks or something that you don't get stuck somewhere, though, if you restart at the beginning.
Can't wait to play it again :)
-
I love it!
-
Well, also fixed the ladders, added in lava, soon to add bucket o' water.
-
Wewt i've been playing this for the past 20 min! ^^ Its so addicting :D Definitely second the check point idea, as well as maybe telling you what an item is once you pick it up so you don't have to go test it and die in the lava or whatever because you thought you got lava boots but they were ice boots or whatever :P
-
glad to see you like it :D
yeah, before a level with a new item(s), I'll have a quick tut of how and when to use the items.
-

Sweet. I beat level 4 as well, so I'll be working on 3 for the time being. ;)
-
Will we be able to swim in the water or will we just kinda die after a while?
-
Will we be able to swim in the water or will we just kinda die after a while?
Right now, you just fall slowly, but you can not drown... yet ;)
I've just been informed that I'm going ot california until sunday, so I won't be posting updates till monday night :(
But by then I should have all levels done and some really cool stuff. ^-^
-

Sounds great :)
And what part of California? SF bay?
-
Hah, take your calculator to California, be a nerd on the beach programming hahaah
-
Apparently it's the nicer part of LA :)
Well, I'm literally going 6000 miles round trip; I definately have enough time on my hand to finish pyyrix completely and get very far into RandC :D
And scout -- all I can say is lol!
on the beach I'll be too distracted by the great sights to be seen ^-^
-
Ah nice, I wish I could go to a trip like that. X.x
I hope you have fun and return soon afterward. :P
-
thanks, I hope I enjoy it too! since I'll have 13 hours on plane round trip, you'll see a LOT of progress on monday night :D
-
Wow that's a lot of hours o.o. Can't wait to see progress :)
-
thanks, you'll be seeing many new things on monday!!! :D :D :D
just 3 more levels for pyyrix, and then to neaten it up for a 1.0 release on monday night...
and then I can work on RandC! :D :D :D
-
Cool! I hope you upload it here and other sites :D
I'll try to find some time to try it on-calc. I've been testing other stuff lately.
-
of course, it'll probably be omnimaga.org exclusive at first
-
Aah ok cool. Maybe you should have an additional level where you collect lobsters. :P
-
thanks, I hope I enjoy it too! since I'll have 13 hours on plane round trip, you'll see a LOT of progress on monday night :D
Just be sure to bring extra batteries though :P
I've gotten screwed up by dead batteries multiple times.
-
/me is wondering how it is progressing. :P
-
1.0 today, fixed all bugs :D not a hoax this time, though last time it was because I was busy.
one hour. max.
-
Cool, I hope I can try it after returning from work. ;D
-
I'm having ti-connect issues...
It recognizes my calc and even will show the files and stuff, but won't intake anything from it...
...help?
-
try restarting your computer :P
-
When TI-Connect gives me errors, doing a RAM Clear on my calc seems to help sometimes. Otherwise, I have to switch the USB port my Silverlink cable is in.
-
Dammit, won't work on either of my comps...
maybe I need that 2.5mm cable, as my other one is broke?
-
ouch that sucks. it recognizes the calc and everything but you can't transfer any files?
-
yep, that's the case :(
either my cable is broken and/or the usb port on my calc is broken -- it's not a comp prob, as it had the same errors on my windows 7 comp as well :P
Maybe I'll transfer to a friend's calc THEN try to upload it?
if that's the case, it could take another week before pyyrix is on the internetz :(
-
What happens when you try to transfer a file?
-
one of 4 messages:
Unable to connect to your TI device. Reconnect and try again.
The file specified could not be found.
You do not have permission to do this transfer.
The transfer was unsucessful. Maybe a retry would work.
-
Just as a side note, I do slightly disapprove of your topic-bumping over IRC. You can stand to wait thirty minutes :P. We're an active community, but not that active that you should be expecting a reply in less than thirty minutes. When someone wants to answer your question/help you out, they will; a 'new post' notification in IRC won't change that.
Back ontopic, here's a post by thepenguin77 that should help :)
If you are going to use TiLP, don't expect to be able to fall back on ti-connect. TiLP makes installing ti-connect twice as hard. Your problem could be related to low batteries, but here's a nearly sure way to get ti-connect working again.
1. Plug in your calculator
2. Go to device explorer and uninstall it
3. Repeat 1 and 2 for any port you think you may have plugged your calc into
4. Uninstall ti-connect
5. Go to your drivers, and delete libusb0
6. Restart computer
7. Reinstall ti-connect
8. Plug calculator in and let it install
9. It should work
-
thanks, I'll try, and sorry for the post bumping but I'll be gone on another trip soon so I really need info right now. Sorry though. :P
-
's all good :). It's not anything serious, just a little etiquette tip :P
edit: and I hope you can get it working :)
-
Ugh at TI-Connect. I hate random errors, especially the one saying not enough archive even when it's almost empty.
Anyway please try not doing the repeated topic bumping again. It can be considered as spam and Netham45 can setup the bot notifier to not display anymore posts by specific users if it gets bad.
I hope you can get the TI-Connect issues solved soon. *wants Pyyrix 1.0 D:*
EDIT: When is your trip starting? ???
-
Im lucky that Ti-connect really never gives me problems D: Good luck getting it fixed! Sometimes replacing your batteries can help, if they are a bit low
-
Btw any luck fixing it today? I hope it's not a link port issue...
-
On the topic of ticonnect errors, I often get "access is denied" errors. ???
-
just transfer the file to a different location, on a flashdrive always works for me and stops that error. Too bad that's not the one I'm getting :P
-
What one do you get right now?
Have you considered reformatting the computer? Sometimes that's the only way to fix calc connection issues.
-
I reformatted it, it didn't work. So, I think it's a cable/direct mini usb port problem
-
Darn, sorry to hear. :/
Does that means Pyrix might never come out? :( I was really looking forward for it. :(
-
it will once I can get a 2.5mm linker. hopefully within the next few days.
-
Ok but I hope it's not a problem with the calc link port. Else you might need another calc. One of my two 83+ has a busted link port and my TI-92 one is dying as well. What error do you get now? Can you get a screen capture from TI-Connect screen capture? I remember once I could but it wouldn't detect my calc when trying to send files.
-
I get a multitude of errors such as "file not found" etc.
I think if something is busted it's the usb port. let me find another mini usb cable and try that first though. It won't let me get a screeny that way though that you mentioned.
-
This is strange. It seems like the files are corrupted or the calc archive/RAM is corrupted X.x

So.... You have no idea when you'll finally post last version of Pyrixx?
-
From my understanding it will be posted when he gets his SilverLink cable. I wonder how long it will take before he gets it, though. If he ordered it from Ebay that's gonna take a few weeks at the very best, that's for sure. I also hope it actually works. X.x
I personally have much less troubles getting my 83+ to be detected with a SilverLink than a serial one (black), but I get errors more often. I also got a direct link, which sometimes give me errors as well.
As final resort, ASHBAD ALVIN will have to copy the entire source code (and images) by hand, which is long (I did that before with The Reign of Legends 1, but from computer to calc, not the opposite).

My doubt: Isn't Pyrixx an assembly game?, so why does he need to get it from calculator....
WAIT, he made it in calculator using Mimas?

It's an Axe game, if I'm not mistaken.
-
It's in Axe I'M pretty sure. And if it was in ASM then he could maybe grab the hex. However, I typed 2400 bytes of hex by hand on my calc once (Codex) and I must say it's very hectic. X.x

wow, but he could mistake one digit and the calculator crashes :S
-
Indeed. I had to double-check my copy of codex a few times to spot crashes the first time. I made backups before running it, though.

One day I was given the HEX code to allow lower case. I also double-checked it, I could crash my calculator!
If Alvin had some time he could also copy Axe code, but that would be a nightmare!

you are not mistaken good sir ;)
best buy doesn't have anything either :(
last store option: office depot (might have it), after that it's probably amazon.com
the source is 17K axe source, but the 36K of appvar levels would be much harder to replicate, the whole process could take hours days :o
so I'll wait till cable.

Good luck finding a cable. None of your friends has one?
-
not that I know of, and if I begged them for one they would look at me awkwardly; remember, these are calculators we are talking about here, kids these days kinda look down on that profession of programming (though they love it when I sell my calc games $2.50 per cable transfer calc to calc, I love it too for the $$$)

Great, if you sell it enough, you can buy a new calc, a new cable, make more games, more money, more calcs, more games, more money and set your own monopoly!
-
Well, you can't make games faster just because you have more calcs... :P
-
Well, you can't make games faster just because you have more calcs... :P
hahahahahah, what a fail by me, but I'd like to have a 1.1 Nspire or 1.7 Nspire. A TI-89 would be welcome too :P
-
From what I remember TI doesn't sell cables individually so good luck finding one. You may need to buy a cable online on Ebay or TI website, which, sadly, requires a credit card. :/
http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/productDetail/us_connectivitycable_silverusb.html
If you check this link and click purchase, you might be able to find a store near you that got the cable, but that's if you can get the form to work, because I tried entering my postal code, even if it said Canadian ones are allowed, and it would tell me invalid postal code. :/
-
I did find a sweet deal for a graphlink cable on amazon, just have to convince my dad to order it :P
and, since it's been so long since I looked at pyyrix, I'm optimizing it for space/speed, and then I can add in a level editor :D
Wow, necropost on my own game's topic :P what's it been, like a month or so now?

I can't wait for you to get it: You'll upload two or three games in a row! :D

I bet you have no idea what my dad gave to me for my birthday today...
pyyrix upload in about 20 minutes.

Now available in the downloads section. Please download and rate.

Right there!!! Downloading, playing and then rating!
-
Thanks scout! Yeah you guys can go there for the download of your life.
-
Awesome! I'm happy to finally be able to play it. I'll load it on my TI-83+ soon.
Btw I just need to load everything in the archives, right? There's no readme. O.O
-
Cool DJ! I hope you like it!
-
Hmm one suggestion before I actually try the game: it would be nice in future versions if we didn't got forced to keep playable levels in RAM, else it may be annoying to have to constantly archive/unarchive what you need/don't need.
-
Yeah in 1.1 I'll do that -- almost done coding that along with custom level support
-
Cool, will the level editor be available in next version?
Also are the messages at the bottom of the title screen randomized? It was different when I ran the game on my calc than Wabbit.
-

I want a level editor too! :)
-
Yeah they're randomized for humor effects. And the level editor will be in 1.1 for sure ;)
-
Well to be honest the game is nice with the features and graphics, but I give it a big 0 on difficulty. It's gone from my calc now. Too hard. Sorry. Slow the game down to 30% of the current speed.
-
Hmm I'll fix that in 1.1 and upload later today or tomorrow...
So you don't even like it?
-
I like it, but only in 25% speed setting in WabbitEmu. Otherwise controlling the character and jumping on small platforms is just impossible.
-
Don't worry I'll fix it. Wait till tonight and 1.1 before rating then please.
-
Yeah I was waiting because noticing there were no readme, I assumed this was not the final version.
The rest of the game is cool, though. I just can't even get past the first area with the spikes. I always jump one platform too far. This is quite news worthy too on the site, although I still think it needs to be made in a way that some people can beat it, else the game will have a small audience (people will give up on the first level).
Another idea I have in mind is checkpoints. Once you hit one, if you die, you restart there. Also it could be nice where there are spikes to have an energy bar. If you get hit 3 times, you die, instead of instant death. Otherwise I guess it might be nice to add a save feature in the level, that can be used 3 times.
-

Same here. Even though I was good at it before, I'm having trouble with the first level, because it seems to be faster than before.
Glad to here you're fixing it.
Still a great game, though.
-
Has anyone tried the other levels? Are they easier? If so, could they maybe be re-ordered? The first one seems more like it would go better for a final level.
-

well, i hacked the appvar. the last level (LOBSTERS) doesn't look hard. it's like a bonus level. level 9 (Final Test) looks like it's all this:
S = spike, B = block
BSBSBSBSSBSSBSSBSSSBSSSBSSS.....
i'm going to be blunt about Endless Pit (level 8). you can't trust anything the level does. if you're falling into a pit of water, avoid the spikes which rapidly come up at you. there's a maze portion which leads to a dead end where you have to suicide on a spike.
overall, i don't like the game. i personally prefer puzzle platformers (alliteration!). pyrrix is set up to be a great puzzle platformer, but the levels are based upon your skill of tapping the arrow keys fast enough to go where you want. i think pyrrix has great potential to be a great game. but the levels are too frustrating, and i'm afraid slower key detection won't help that.
also, i have yet to figure out the difference between "thief" and "shoplifter" modes, except shoplifter = 1 and theif = 2 in the appvar.
-
Hmm I see. I'll slow it down for now, but by how much? Maybe make it three times slower?
I'll try to make the levels a bit easier. Level 1 was easy for me, but I have no doubt why...
I'll fix it so even nemo likes it. Also, on shoplifter, you get to keep your items when you die, in thief, you star all over again.
To tell the truth, I'm working on a checkpoint system. It'll change the entire format of the levels though. Size wise, that is. And, memo is right, some levels do suck, but others are quite cool. I think 8 and 9 suck too, but that's because I lost their data like 5 times, so in the end I got bored and quickly threw them together again. However, I think levels like 5 and 6 were excellent, I spent 3 hours each on those, and I enjoy playing them.
Thanks for the input, and when I finish pyyrix 1.1 by tomorrow, I'll make it much better than you'll be able to possibly want ;)
-
Hmm, personally I think slowing it down might help fixing the too-fast key detection, but as long as it doesn't make key detection unresponsive. The current problem is that jumping on a small platform is impossible. Either you move one step too far or you don't move far enough. I think it would be good to make the speed the exact same as Block Dude in Puzzpack.
@Nemo I think the difference between thief and shoplifter is that with one of them you start with fewer lives.
Anyway I can't wait for the next version. What are you going to add to reduce the difficulty?
-
I'll actually change the levels, add checkpoints, and slow it down but still keep it responsive.
-
Aah nice. Can't wait. I hope it's not too hard to implement, though. X.x (checkpoints)
-
I definitely agree. I spent two hours trying to beat level 1, and I would have had it except that the keypresses messed me up. It's definitely too fast. As for I name, it should be called "Pyyrix's Most Evil, Mindbogglingly Difficult, F*cking Impossible Death Trap".
-
That said, the game, other than difficulty, is pretty nice, though. I played it at 25% speed and it was nice
-
HA!
I have at last defeated Level 1, and Level 2 followed closely. 8)
-
Congrats!
/me hopes Ashbad will upload new version soon. ^^
-
Agreed. Level 3 is impossible.
-
Awesome! New version! I can't wait for checkpoints and keeping the data in Archive. :)
-
I wonder where did Ashbad go, though? He usually posts every single day and now he has been gone since the weekend. O.O I hope it wasn't due to comments on 1.0 x.x

nah more like iPad fever, plus working on my boy scout eagle project and a school project. just kinda busy, I'll be much more active in january ;)
-
Oooh, another aspiring Eagle Scout. Good luck with that :)
As for pyyrix, maybe make it smooth-scroll? That would probably help a lot with the too-fast-ness :-/
-
working on my boy scout eagle project
What are you doing? I wish you luck, both on the project and on the paperwork that takes forever. Remember "Thank You"s to everyone. :)

I'll remember to do that ;)
I'm making a really disgusting area behind my church really beautiful. I'm still working out details, but I just got a professional in and I realized that the building limitations won't let us build a patio (not laws or anything, just that it's impossible to build one in the area; the slop is right above maximum patio slope, and there are leveling issues)
eh, it'll be January by the time 1.1 is released. sorry :(
-
Ah ok, well I hope you don't quit calc stuff over iPad stuff x.x. I saw this happen with games before. X.x
I hope to play 1.1 in January :D
-
hmm... for some reason, tilp is refusing to send any of the pyrix levels...
anyways, i too am looking forward to updates of some sort.
-
You might want to report this in the TiLP thread. I think a few other games had that issue recently.
-
That's weird... O.o
Well, I am getting it closer to 1.1, but I'm also working on trio and niko's revamp right now. But it is going along nicely, I've almost got the checkpoint system up and running :D
-
Bwa, you guys just aren't hardcore enough :) I grew up on games like this. The impossible difficulty is, for me at least, great fun. I hope to see this speed (as an option mebbe? wouldn't want to cause unnecessary aneurysms) in the final game.
-
I agree personally with justcause, but to get a high ranking, gotta get public approval
:P
And justcause, I'll keep the old speed, but also have a speed that's slower in the easier difficulty. But to unlock levels they still have to beat certain ones on hard ;)
-

I think it just depends of people really. I personally grew with Mario, Metroid and that stuff, but I could never get used to the difficulty of some Mega Man games. Even today I have troubles at some games. There's a point where I can't seem to improve my skills anymore. Example: At Starcraft, I've been in the lowest tier league after like 350 games and can barely beat anyone from higher leagues. At Halo, when I played, I lost every game and when my team won, I was always last in kills. That's weird... O.o

Ah ok. Keep up the good work on both :D
-
Are you still planning to do that 1.1 release eventually?
-
yeah, but I'm not really working much on it atm, mostly TaNF and TaND
-
Ah ok, I hope to see a new release after TaNF/D are done.
-
1.1 in the works, expected release next friday, with all concerns fixed.
-
Yay! :D I can't wait. ;D
-

Everyone's reviving their projects today :o That's great!
-
indeed it is ;)
here's a question for you all: how much do you think I can optimize off? I know the answer already, but I'm interested in what you think. It's currently at 15K executable code. What will it be after optimizations? Winner gets a gold star.

8K? ;D
-
higher.
-
Over 9000 bytes.
-
okay, no exact guesses? I guess I'll have to give myself a gold star. I expect to optimize no less than 10057 bytes.

O.O.O.O
That's two thirds of the entire thing! How are you going to do that?
-
you don't know how badly it was written. A rewrite would take at most 4 hours and it would chop off 2/3rds indeed.
-

2/3? Then it must be full of unneeded stuff, good luck chopping it down!
-
thanks, It might not actually take that long to chop down believe it or not ;)
-

It is hard to believe, indeed.

That's something unique about Axe -- you can start making games almost immediately, but by the time a few weeks pass, you realize how much more optimized it could have been :D

Axe?? Really? I always thought it was Assembly.
-
yeah it's axe ;) I could write it in assembly, but I'm an ultra fast Axe coder so I can stick with that ;)
also, I'm not considering making a 1.1 version anymore.
I'm making a whole new reboot.
It'll make 1.0 look like dirt ;)
I'll try to get a lot done today and tomorrow and post some screenies here.

Even if it rises at 16 KB I am happy this was finally revived. It's certainly gonna have a news when it comes out, ticalc included, hopefully.
-
Nice! You finally rebooted this project. I hope it turns out as well as you are planning for it to.
-
nice to see all the support :)
also c.sprinkle, good to see you're not like dead :P you went missing for a little while.
-
I did. My parents banned me from calcs and Omni for 2 months. It helped win Necropost, though. :P
-
It helped win Necropost, though. :P
loli :P
anyways, this is going smoothly, Latar I can post the updated sprites (I have to say they are cool -- makes pyyrix look like he's a member of Team Rocket or something :P)
-

You still didn't win necropost. It's not the last time you posted, it's the last person who posted. You never won, sorry.
-
Crap.
-
here's a gold star for your efforts.

-
Oh updated sprites? Nice. (Although the current ones did the job very well). Can't wait for version 1.1.
-
Also, DJ, hope this doesn't disappoint you, but I'm also redoing the levels :( :) (not sure if it's good or bad -- the new ones will have better puzzles than before -- though 1.0's were a bit more action based. I'll try to hit on both points ;D)
-
Aw, will you still include the old ones? :( Maybe an external level pack? D:
-
I'll make it entirely possible to play the old ones ;) They will still have to be in the old format, but the new maps will be crammed in on another app page(s).
though the older ones won't include the newer features :P
-
Good to hear. :D
-
yeah, I know there's a few people here who loved the old ones ;D especially the 10th one, 'Lobsters?!?!'
-
Well I never even got to level 10. I can't beat 1 X.x
-
So can't I....
It just moves too fast for me...(TI-84+SE)
-
Yeah in the next version he was planning to fix that.
-
In the next 'version', it shall be called 'The Journeys of Pyyrix the Thief', a total reboot with better tiles (more than 80 different types), more items, updated sprites, and better levels.
HERE'S THE CATCH: due to DJ and others wanting the old levels still, I WILL be adding them on in an unlockable content package! The whole complete levels, rebooted with the new sprites and better responsiveness, for old school supporters to get what they want! (And here's another catch: the old levels now total to 36K, but in the new version of the game, they'll be as little as about 8-9K TOTAL!)
I shall start a new topic for the reboot, since it's way too different to call the old version, but like I said this new reboot will have something fun for everybody to enjoy! ;D
EDIT: the new project will be presented here as progress moves along: http://ourl.ca/9934/190425;topicseen#new
EDIT2: since this project is now being rebooted, here is the secret cheat to see all of the levels without hacking -- in the cheats menu, hold down 'O', 'M', 'N', and 'I' and once and then let go!
-
I see, well good luck on the reboot!
