Title: ARMY Concepts and Basic Information
Post by: Raylin on April 13, 2010, 09:16:03 pm
ARMY: At the End of Eternity

The year is 4156.
You and your brother have woken up on a battle-scarred wasteland of a world called Sessharim.
A being called the Supreme Intellect (SI) has proposed a question to the cosmos:

Will law and order triumph over chaos and discord?

Resolved in his methods, the SI implants evil in your brother and gives you both the power to extract warriors from all periods of time to fight for your cause. As the SI leaves to see the battle unfold, he says:

My vast knowledge has been stored in large capsules across Sessharim.
Go. Seek them out.
Use the knowledge to end the battle and lay my weary mind to rest...

Now, you have a problem.
Your brother just became an evil overlord and talking won't stop the wave of gladiators coming at you.
What do you do?

Let your ARMY do the talking.

In the thread called Screenshots.

Also, I have the gameplay mechanics down.
I'll create a new thread with details later.

Interesting question. (Will law and order triumph over chaos and discord?)
My best answer is everything decays to chaos no matter what we struggle. Dunno what the future tech and knowledge can change.

err, ontopic:
Original history. Is it going to enter in the game or readme? Or just serve as inspiration and concept for the game?
Good luck and put good playability into the game, that is so important on RTS.

Is this really real-time, or turn based?  If it's real time, then no offense, I am jealous that I'm no longer designing the "only RTS for Ti-83+ calculators" :)

IIRC it's semi real time and turn based. You build an army and stuff in turn based mode then once you're ready, you send the army against the enemy then real time action starts. Am I right Raylin?

It's like this:

There is a deployment screen where the player can customize the squad members and change the equipment of the individual soldiers. Then, the player presses [START] and the battle begins. So... yeah.

Pseudo-real-time strategy game.

yayI was almost right. One thing I wonder is during battle, is it possible to send more soldiers?

Yeah. Sending more soldiers is a Tactic you can use as a CO.
It can change the battle in your favor very quickly. :)

Say you start the battle with Squads 2 and 3. (10 units)
Your opponent starts with Squads 1, 2, and 3. (15 units)
Your squad, through valiant efforts, kill 4 units.
However, your opponent leave you with one man standing.
Use the Tactic to send in more Squads and suddenly, the battle is 16 to 6.

:D

And you get some money as you kill soldiers, right?

Yes, of course.

Will the opponent be able to buy more units too?

One thing that would be cool is if to end the battle completly, one of the soldier had to go touch a building icon, that designs the castle or village where soldiers are trained and stuff, so if the soldier does, then they can no longer build units, thus, are dead.

(Darn you replied fast lol)

Well, the idea is that you have the ability to make time portals and extract warriors from all periods of time.
I can't think of a way to instantly end the game besides the Firebomb Tactic...

Oh wait...

Did I say that out loud...? :D

It may not play like you think it will.
The entire concept that I was trying to stress is the lack of input when the battle starts.
The CO is only allowed to call in Tactics and nothing else.
I don't know if that really counts as an RTS.

Mhmm I see. Well if battles are real-time, maybe it could be some sort of RTS. However, it would be more the style of older ones like Lord Of The Realms, not Warcraft or Starcraft, where you built a base and could get attacked in the base in the mean time

then again the calc is a hard medium for RTS games, still good idea.

yeah true.

In my stay in the TI community, I saw 2 ASM Starcraft projects (one in late 2003 on MaxCoderz board and another in 2007 on UTI and Omnimaga) and both of them had units stored in the tilemap and moving case by case (grid). Now imagine 100 units moving at once on a tilemap, each of which having to go through an A.I. routine to make them move accross solid map tiles and detect enemies nearby to attack them, and still allow the player to do stuff like sending another group of units elsewhere on the map (I think in the N64 Command and Conquer and Warcraft II, it only kept the last two commands in memory. If you told a 3rd group of unit to go somewhere or do something, the first one would stop moving completly, simply because it was way too much to handle) or build new structures/units/upgrades.

I remember you saying that ARMY was now going to be similar to the 8-bit Starcraft video I put up.  Any luck?

Wow I totally forgot about that O.O (Not ARMY, but what you just said Hot Dog). I wondered how was this progressing but Raylin seemed busy with life stuff, and now I think he's focusing on something else + Phantoom Sactuary. I hope Army and his RPG aren't dead, though. D:

One of many projects I must revive.

No worries, revived after a long time is better than permanently dead

/me wishes Starcraft Ghost wasn't dead

Yeah same here, although personally I wasn't as much interested by it because it was not a strategy game like the others.

I wish they maybe did something like Starcraft 64 for consoles but without the lag and adding online multiplayer. However, I guess it could never top the computer game because I played SC 64 once and without a mouse it's really hard to micro your units. X.x
