Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: dysfunction on May 13, 2005, 08:12:00 am
Hi, I'm the author of Ender's Game, and I'm happy to say I'm making a lot of progress, though most of it isn't very visible. I'm waiting for the new version of xLib before I finish the gui. For anyone who doesn't know, Ender's Game is a turn-based strategy game based on the book of the same title by Orson Scott Card. It's somewhat similar to Advance Wars, with the huge difference that it takes place in space, and you have to deal with realistic physics- rather than just moving units a certain number of spaces a turn, you accelerate/decelerate them to control their velocity.

EDIT (December 1, 2005): Well, I've changed the title to Defilers since I've decided to make this game no longer based off the book "Ender's Game," and come up with some plot, as well as changing the engine a bit.

EDIT (December 30, 2005): I've changed the theme once again. It's now called "Battlestar Galactica," based on the remake of the 1970s cult scifi classic. Despite the fact that its a remake, the new version has actually surpassed the original, and gone on to be named Time Magazine TV show of the year for 2005. I've made up completely new sprites, and I think I've finally settled on the theme for the game.

Got a lot of work done today, I'm almost done with the in-game menu(what pops up when you select a ship), and then I'll work on the main menu(saving, loading, info, etc).
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 14, 2005, 01:45:00 pm
nice, will the main menu look like the old one? It was cool, maybe you could just invert the colors and it would be as nice. Also when you'll buy units or buildings (if its possible) will it pop up a menu showing all units or buildings avaliable in the starcraft style?
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: dysfunction on June 15, 2005, 08:43:00 am
Yeah, I'll be using the same main menu, except with even cooler text effects. Also, you won't buy units or buildings (remember you're in deep space, years from the nearest starport).

how many units can you have at once?

(btw due to the fact Omnimaga and me have been blamed for starting debates about what the RPG genre is (remember the Dark Auron matter at MaxCoderz) I had no choice but to move this topic in the Announce your project section. The reason why I aded it is because it had a cool RPG-ish stylized storyline with FFTOM like movies but now that they are gone if I leave this topic in the RPG project section once its released it might cause more problems than benefits, maybe even another war in the TI community. I would have liked to keep it because its a very awesome game but I cant, sorry :(sad.gif (I need a cry emoticon). You can still post your progress here tho, this section isnt necessarly for RPGs)

K no problem. As for limits on number of units, there aren't really any- there'll be variable map sizes, so it really just depends on how many are needed for a particular scenario. Obviously you can't have more units than will fit on the map of course.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 18, 2005, 01:48:00 am
sound nice so far. I guess for the scenario that there will be a small flash-gordonatized text intro before each mission, like in Starcraft and Command and Conquer

Huh, no- there'll still be cutscenes. I'm just not going to do as many as I originally planned, and they will certainly will be very limited (probably just talking faceshots) in the beta.
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 19, 2005, 07:07:00 am
Yeah I know there will be some cutscenes, but not enough to make the plot RPG-ish like the old 2003 trailer

This game is looking very, very good, I'm surprized by how much TI-BASIC for the z80 improved lately!

Those graphics scroll pretty fast, it's quite impressive!

No, but you can get picked up for underage drinking (assuming you're <21). Well, I've run into some weird errors, something extremely simple that just plain should work- but doesn't. LOL about the emoticon

xLIB has given me many errors in the past few days, like Merthsoft map editor clearing my RAM upon starting, the bug you mentionned on MaxCoderz *hopes its not like Omnicalc 1.00 and 1.10*
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: dysfunction on June 22, 2005, 01:34:00 am
This IS the error I talked about on MC, but I don't think it's a problem with XLIB though... Merthsoft had the same error, as well.
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 22, 2005, 01:47:00 am
Hmm if if more than one ppl got this error this might be a xLIB problem that causes some math equations to not be interpreted correctly by xLIB

Could you do me a favor- read the topic at MC, try out that code, and tell me your results?

tr1p1ea and Merthsoft both tried it, and both have the same results- I think tr1p1ea's working on a fix, but I don;t think he has any idea of what the problem is.

Post by: dysfunction on November 13, 2005, 01:24:00 pm
Guys, I have a difficult decision to make. I am considering changing the direction of this project a bit. As much as I love the Ender's Game novel upon which this game is based, I am considering changing the plot. I think that my current battle system is too complicated and unwieldy, which is a result of the very- shall we say, unusual- weapons used in the book, which are actually pretty impractical for a TBS. Rather, I am considering taking the engine and adding very diffferent types of weapons, as well as removing the zero-gee element, which I think is somewhat akward in terms of gameplay. When ships reach the edge of the screen, they simply stop, which is very unrealistic, but necessary because of the limited screen size. The main weapon from the book, the Molecular Disruption Device, is also impractical for a TBS, since it destroys any ship it hits in one shot, as well as any ships within a certain radius. This is akward because in such a small map as is practical on the 83's ram, ships will tend to be grouped together rather closely, and each side will be able to wipe out very large numbers of enemy ships with a stroke. This also means that every ship has the same firepower as every other. Now, to balance this out a little, I added missiles, and made it so that only capital ships could fire the MD device, and those had to charge it for several turns before firing again. Missiles were also impractical in zero-gee since it is so difficult to predict where an enemy ship will be in the next turn.
I propose stripping out the zero-gee element, and changing the plot to one of my own devising. It will still involve space battles (since I'm such a scifi addict), but with more standard weapons such as beams and missiles. It will also have more variety in ships and objectives, such as resources/money, fuel, etc. This also completely strips out the need for most of the physics engine, and vastly simplifies the necessary AI. What do you guys think?
Title: Battlestar Galactica

i think thats a good decision, just keep up the good work  :thumb:google.gif Glad to know this isn't dead :)smile.gif
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 13, 2005, 01:45:00 pm
nice to see it isnt dead. I think adapting a game to a novel, a movie or a song isnt really a big deal. most of the time you need to change things or it will be either too simple or too hard. Same goes for adapting a movie/book to a game. I like the new idea, maybe you'll not have to get someone make a AI in ASM for you then :)smile.gif
Title: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: dysfunction on November 14, 2005, 01:21:00 pm
Well, I would say the AI would still need to be in ASm. However this way I wouldn't need a huge physics engine, so I can at least make a multiplayer version without having to rely on gimpynerd or tr1p1ea.

Here's my working title: "Defilers." Essentially, after humans move out to the stars because Earth is overpopulated, factions fight wars over the most hospitable worlds. Slowly, two factions gain support; a heavily industrialized + militarized faction, and a fanatical faction dedicated to the preserving of all worlds' ecosystems. These two factions slowly take control of the lesser groups, leading to an eventual showdown between superpowers.

Post by: dysfunction on December 02, 2005, 03:33:00 pm
Yeah all the bugs are gone, I actually came up with a much simpler (and faster) way of doing it now. Large ships look like this in the matrix now:

[63       64.1
 75.3    76.2]

If the decimal is 3, it moves up one, if the decimal is 1 it moves left one, if the decimal is 2 it moves up and left.

well I made the font of the logo bigger, so that should suffice.
I also implemented a function that will allow you to jump the viewpoint to the top left, top right, bottom left, or bottom right corners of the map, as well as the center, this way you can quickly go all the way to the other side of the map. Should I also add a Goto function to the middle of the top, bottom, right , and left sides of the map?

Ah what the heck, it's going to be based on Battlestar Galactica, mostly based off the new series. The original was great when I was younger, but the huge cheesiness makes me almost embarrassed by it now. Anyways, I've drawn sprites already for the Viper Mk II, the Raptor, the Cylon Raider, Colonial One, the Galactica, and face shots for Apollo and Starbuck. The sprites will still be 8x8 (except Colonial One is 24x16 and the Galactica is 64x32), but now they will have diagonal movement. I'll post them up later, my Yahoo account is almost full. I've just signed up for a Freewebs acount, but they only allow you to post files 750k or less for the first few days. By the way, did you guys hear that the new series was named Time Magazine's TV show of the year?

I had made some 16x16 sprites, but they took up too much of the screen. I loved them so much I wanted to incorporate them into the game somehow, however; so now when your cursor goes over a ship a 16x16 icon of it pops up in the top right corner.

I was a fan of the original for quite some time, and as a result I missed most of the new miniseries and the first few episodes of the new series, because I 'knew' a remake could never be good. It wasn't until almost halfway through the first season that I realized how very wrong I was. The remake in fact SURPASSES the original. It's very different, but honestly better.
And Ranman was right about the minimap function.

Oh, fans of the original may not recognize some of the ships. The Cylon raider design is very different (those are the ships shown near the beginning). The vipers are pretty similar to the original, and the larger ship is not in the original at all- it's Colonial One, the President's ship.

One of my favorite quotes from the new series:

Apollo: The President has given me a direct order.
Adama: You're talking about the Secretary of Education! We're in the middle of a war, and you're taking orders from a schoolteacher?!!

i made up some very large (40x32), v sprites for battle animations like in Advance Wars, I'm actually quite proud of them. From top to bottom: Cylon Raider, Colonial Viper, Colonial Raptor.

For those who are not familiar with the show, some info on the various ships:

Raiders are the Cylons' primary space superiority fighters. They come in several varieties. They all carry twin auto cannons mounted under the wing and most have missiles of some form; one variety carries nuclear missiles for taking out enemy capital ships. They are equal in speed and maneuverability of a viper. The Raider's chief advatange, however, is the great mass in which the Cylons are able to produce them; also it is suspected that Raiders are piloted by remote, a great advantage over the manpower-strapped Colonial Fleet. However, in my game, the Raiders will carry neither missiles nor have jump capabilities (except in a few missions).
Vipers are the Colonials' primary space superiority fighter. Most of Galactica's Vipers are of the sopmewhat outdated Mark II variety. The Galactica had just been decommissioned when the Cylons wiped out the Twelve Colonies, and was to become a flying museum. Therefore, most of her newer Mark VII and VIII Vipers had been re-assigned to battlestars on active duty. Most of the Mark IVs and remaining Mark VII Vipers were destroyed by the Cylon virus, as they used newer computer linkages which the Mark II did not have. The Viper has no jump capability and a limited missile package; however it is very fast and maneuverable. Unfortunately, the Mark II variant, lacking more sphisticated computers, is very difficult to fly; and only the most experienced pilots can easily handle them.
Raptors are the workhorse of the Colonial fleet. They are not very manueverable, but can carry a wide variety of weapons, have excellent jump capabilities, and can be fitted with a range of mission packages for intelligence, transport, and many other types of missions. In the game they will be the only fighter with missile or jump capabilities, however they can not move many spaces per turn.

I don;'t think all the text would be that way, it would take up too much space in pics. But the main menu, intro menu, and key places will use this text; however the softkey-based in-game navigational menu will use regular text.

What do you mean non-smoothed?

How when you move something like text or so it leaves a trail behind it.

Well, the 83's screen is naturally a bit blurry, but you're right, most emulators do overstate that blurriness by turning it grayscale. The only one that I've seen which doesn't really do this is TI Flash Debugger, but it has a whole host of other limitations (doesn't support grayscale, runs far too fast, doesn't support contrast changing, has awful keypress detection, etc).

In pindurTI debugger you can change the LCD settings, put momentum up and down to 100% and it will be almost like flash debugger.

ALso I noticed the screenie seems a bit blurry at 2x size, you should disable optimising when resizing gifs in image editors so it wont look anti aliased :)smile.gif

It'd be cool if there was a link version.  But it might be unnecessary.

'm not planning on implementing AI, at least for the first release; it will be 2-player only, with both linkplay and two-player on one calc. As for units, we have the Vipers (mostly the Mark IIs but I'll have a few Mark IVs and Mark VIIs in certain scenarios to enhance strategy), Raptors, which can carry several different weapons packages (assault mode, scout mode, and long-range mode), and Raiders, which also carry different packages (space superiority mode, scout/long-range mode, and nuclear assault mode). In addition, there will be a variety of capital ships, however the player will not usually control them; their movements will be scripted. These include the Galactica herself, Colonial One (in a few missions you will have to protect it), Cylon Base Stars, probably Cylon Resurrection ships, and probably a few Colonial civilian ships which you will have to protect.

Yeah, I'm a big scifi fan myself (once again, thank you for recommending Serenity!). In fact, I spend lots of time writing scifi short stories, which I hope to start getting published soon. This is why Aura has an [brag]awesome plot,[/brag] and so soon will this game.

I wish I was a good story writer!!

This is amazing (can't be said enough). I was hoping we will still see progress on this, though you are working with patoria on Arua.
