Title: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: aeTIos on April 23, 2011, 11:05:51 am
Hello omnimagicanoes and trolls and other,

I was working on a secret project and I start working on the same 'unsecreted' project now.

Its called Final Fantasy : Quest for Rana.

Story and prologue:

-- Story --

You are Ryan, one of the Hikarii knights that defend the treasures of Rana. Those treasures give the power to the magical sceptre of the king of Eukaria, King Travan. Of course, there are people who want to rule over the kingdom and want the treasures of Rana...

-- Prologue --

It was a dark night in the kingdom of Eukaria. It was cloudy and you couldn't see the moon. In Rana, the Hikarii knights were guarding the entrance of the shrine where the treasures were kept.

Suddenly...

"AAAAAARC!" one of the guards cried, and he fell dead. The other guard looked around and saw his friend dead on the ground, with an arrow in his head. At that time, he realized that he was looking to the wrong side, and turned to the other side... and faced one of the knights of Lord Copar...

half an hour later.
"ouch... I'm not going to survive this... I'm writing something here in the sand..."

The other day...

Ryan ran to the hill where the shrine with the treasures of Rana was. The guards were not returned, so there was something wrong. He came on the top of the hill and found his mates lying dead. Then he looked in the shrine...

and saw a message in the sand:
"Wer kiled bj lord cpar kight. th stol th treasus o Ra/"  (Yes, that is intended to have much spelling mistakes lol)

Okay, that was it. Any comments/suggestions?

Good luck with this aeTIos!
As for your sprites, I hope you find somebody, because I won't be able to since I'm busy with my own project(Not that I'm such a great spriter :P).

Maybe you could make the game still a little more frightning?
For example: He turned around and you could see at his expression that what he was beholding wasn't something from this world....(lol).

The game seems interesting. Assuming you are familiar with all tilemapping concepts and what needs to be done with RPGs, you should be able to pull this off. Make sure the game isn't too big at first, though, if you never worked on a RPG before.

Spyro: Yeah, pretty much every project here is TI, I'm sorry.
Because I'm learning ASM pretty well atm, this is going to be in ASM :w00t: The only thing that I have to learn for it in ASM is how to display sprites and I'm ready for it ;)

I'd highly recommend that you make this game shells-only and use iPutSprite.

... and coz its 16x16 I use iputlargesprite. I have no clue, though, how to use the include files in Mimas.

Most likely, this is going to be in chapters.

I see. So it's not gonna be an app, right?

Also Spyro don't worry, maybe eventually there will be a 84+ emu for the Prizm.

He is not getting a Prizm, if I recall right from his sig. he is getting a fx-9860 slim. the one that TI posted in a slightly modified pic on their website to illustrate the 84Pocket.

I finally read the story the other day and it looked intriguing, how is the coding going on? Any progress?

Not in assembly atm, the first chapter will be in Axe. I'll upload a tilemapper demo soon, for your viewing pleasure
Some details: The maps are 24x19 tiles (width*height) and the graphics are awesome (imo :))

I thought about it, and I decided that only the demos will be axe.
Oh, and some eyecandy for you to view. Its Travan's Castle.

(sorry for the double-post)

wow, this looks good :) some suggestions:

- The bricks on the castle look great, but could use some dithered shading to make them stand out even more ;)
- the trees are cool, but I suggest making more tiles so they can be staggered, much like Zelda and TaNF do
- the water doesn't stand out much and isn't greatly detailed -- I suggest trying to do something like this (http://tilesettutorial.wordpress.com/2008/01/22/7/)
- the grass is okay, but I would make it even less profound (more white) since this is Black and White

just some suggestions for you to consider ;)

Woah this looks great! O.O

The only suggestion I got, however, would be to make the trees larger, so they're more proportional to the castle size. However it looks great.

another good suggestion ;)

proportionality can be very key with things like this.  better proportions make things look better overall.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try to implement those.

Looks good. I agree with Ashbad though about the proportionality.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: aeTIos on May 11, 2011, 07:58:06 am
I haven't fixed proportions yet, but added dithering and a new water tile :D
What about it?
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: ZippyDee on May 11, 2011, 08:07:52 am
That looks a lot better! Wow, adding the dithered castle tiles make it pop out just that much more. And the water is much more recognizable. Great job!

next: Larger trees.

Wow, that's a really nice looking screen mockup! The trees in that particular picture are fine in my humble opinion. Castles and mansions often times have small shrubbery that looks like small pine trees. The happen to fit quite nicely with this particular scene. However, designing larger trees for other overworld areas wouldn't be a bad idea. :D Very nice looking so far.

Post by: aeTIos on May 11, 2011, 08:55:29 am
Yeah, I was thinking about leaving the trees for this map the way it is. For woods and such Im going to design large trees.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: ZippyDee on May 11, 2011, 09:02:33 am
well, I think if you're going to have trees be that size, then they shouldn't be triangular. That suggests that they're redwood trees, which tend to grow to be gigantic...
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: aeTIos on May 11, 2011, 09:06:22 am
Remember, it's a royal garden, so the trees are cutted in a special shape :P
I'll try to improve them a bit
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: TIfanx1999 on May 11, 2011, 09:10:25 am
@Zippydee, it doesn't really, simply because of the size. Many pine trees share that shape, large and small alike.

I like the water.  How does dithering on the slant walls look? I think that would look better, but I don't know for sure.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: ZippyDee on May 11, 2011, 10:04:38 am
Or maybe darken the right-facing slant wall so that the shadows pop a bit more?
Title: Re: Final Fantasy - Quest for Rana
Post by: aeTIos on May 11, 2011, 10:27:30 am
Actually, dithering the slant walls is a pain and looks awful. I keep it this way. Anyway, I need help with a bigger (32x32) tree. I would like it a bit like an Oregon Pine. Thanks in advance!

So just a bit like yours? (I believe they're pines too)

Yeah, but more like this:(http://www.winterberrypinesshihtzu.com/tree_20pine.gif)

I tried to see what I could whip up in ~5 minutes.  I've never drawn a pine before so it ended up looking like a oak-maple cross, but it can be staggered quite easily and looks pretty good:
