Title: Grayscale Pokemon Red/Blue Clone?
Post by: jsj795 on February 07, 2010, 08:12:14 pm
After weeks of resting from programming and just playing calc games that are coming out, I decided to warm up by programming something basic... But when I had no idea what to program, I went from one project to another aimlessly, never getting too far. And while browsing internet, I decided, why not try to clone pokemon?
So, Yesterday and today, I sat down and drew sprites. All day. And Finally, after drawing about 70 16x16 sprites, made 2 rooms of Ash's house (but I have more sprites that are not used) and made simple program that does collision detection and character movement... All in grayscale. I used xLib in this program.
Should I continue?

Well.. does the graphics glitch out like that on hardware?

Something else to note, Ash is supposed to stay in the middle of the screen at all times, if you are trying to keep with being like the originals.

Otherwise, so far so good. Just beware, this is quite the undertaking. :p I should know, as I have been working on this for 4 years or better XD

The graphics on wabbitemu does seem to be pretty slow, even on firefox... may be it's because of new wabbitemu version? IDK... anyways, I haven't played pokemon for at least few years, so my memory is kind of bad... I didn't know Ash was supposed to be in the middle all the time XD
Gotta play pokemon again! And yeah, it will probably be HUGE, and may be I'll split into 2 parts, one for 8x8 sprites w/o grayscale, especially for TI-83+, and for 83+SE/84+/SE will be 16x16 w/ grayscale, and if they choose to, 8x8 w/o grayscale. And I'm not absolutely sure I'll continue it tho... It was supposed to be warm up for my rusting programming skill

Well, to be honest, I am kinda sad to see TLM die because of this :/, I would like to see TLM done first, since there are alerady 4 or 5 Pokémon clones in the work in the TI community (Tifreak8x, Shimbs, Metagross111, AMKiller and Finale-TI), two of which are complete clones of the original. If you want to take on such project later, I guess you can go ahead, though. Remember, though: a Pokémon project is a lot of work. Ti-Freak8x has been working on his for 5 years now and Metagross111 almost two i think.
But yeah doN,t kill TLM :/

don't worry lol
I will not kill TLM. As I said, this was a warm up^^
Right now, I'm currently looking back at TLM code to see where I left off, and implementing more stuff and stuff...

You could always do some sort of grayscale tilemapping routines, though, that would be cool ^^

I had a scrolling tilemapper featuring 4 lv grayscale but it flickered a lot when scrolling :(

Glad to hear you're not killing TLM ^^

Cleaning out the rust is always a good thing XD

But yeah, good luck with what you decide.

Interesting.  It looks great, but I wonder if you're taking on too many projects at once.  Everything I've seen of yours looks excellent, but there's already a lot of Pokemon games.  It looks awesome, but I agree with DJ: I want TLM more. ;D

Oh wow, it looks really nice, I hope you do go ahead and make a game out of this  :D
