Title: IDEAS
Post by: jsj795 on February 13, 2013, 10:58:34 pm
Hey guys! It's been really long time since I visited Omnimaga x.x
My life has been hectic with me joining the U.S. Army and going through trainings and whatnot, and now that my training is almost over and I have more "privileges" of using phone and computer, I hope to slowly come back to Omnimaga and be active again :)

Anyways, I don't know if many of older members remember my old project, Tale of the Lost Map, aka TLM, a z80 BASIC RPG that I have attempted to make.

Basically, this new game is almost exactly same as TLM, as far as game mechanics go. Linear Platform movement and map (very similar to the game MapleStory) featuring ASCII art inspired by Illusiat series, and a unique battle engine that can be best described as being similar to Tales of Phantasia (youtube shown below), but my battle system being 1v1 and turn-based.

The main difference from TLM is largely storyline. When I first made Tale of the Lost Map, I kind of made the title first, and tried to make the storyline fit into this self-made restriction. This caused so many issues concerning the game world and the storyline, and inhibited my creativity by a lot. Hence, I decided to throw away any kind of clinging I had with this "Lost Map" shit, what kind of power it would have, how would that affect the gameplay and mechanics, and whatever else that came along with it.

Although I don't want to spoil too much on the new storyline, it mixes medieval/western fantasy with science fiction in very unique and interesting way.
Spoiler For what the title IDEAS stand for:
Injected
Dream
Experience
Application
System

I will leave with this quote, which fits very nicely with the setting of this game.

"We are asleep. Our life is a dream. But we wake up, sometimes, just enough to know that we are dreaming."
 Ludwig Wittgenstein

Heya, long time no see. Nice to see you back. :) I remember you working on TLM quite well. Last  I remember yowu were trying to find a good balance between smart and fast enemy AI.

Its good now that you arent letting yourself be restricted creatively. Youll have much more play with the storyline that way.

Hey AoC! Nice to see you too :)

Today, I've defined the background information on the game story, and decided to share. I hope it's clear enough for people to understand what kind of machine IDEAS is.

IDEAS inject a dream world data into the brain, which creates that world as a dream, and allows the consciousness to live within the world. Since it is not a real world, it does not have to be confined within
the law of physics, although most worlds use it for the sake of it being less likely to be rejected from users. The dream world can be rejected if the consciousness is not able to understand the data or something
like the death of the user occurs. IDEAS was developed by a company named "Evirus" and is used as entertainment like a video game.

Memory is a physical storage mechanism for data to be used by IDEAS from which the dream world is constructed. It usually contains pre-programmed dream world, made from Evirus or amateur developers.

Dynamically Imported Memory (DIM) does not have a pre-programmed dream world; rather it generates the world from the user's unconsciousness.

The data on a Memory is loaded into the Somnia Mundus, a region responsible for dreaming, and consciousness gains the inputs from there. With DIM, the data is generated through the creative side of the brain. External stimulant could wake up the user, but IDEAS save the current world and history for future use. Death in dream world causes the dream world to collapse, waking up the user and erasing all data from Somnia Mundus. IDEAS has set intermittent hybernation state, which lets the user to go into lucid dream, during which the user can either go back to their dream world, save current dream world, or exit the use. The hardcore mode deletes the save file upon death.

With this being said, I already have an overall plot line for the actual game itself, but I won't be sharing that right now :p

Tomorrow, I hope to have at least something on the calculator (at the very least title screen) to get into coding.

Sounds very nice so far. ^^The  plot kind of reminds me of Total Recall.

A mockup of the title screen as of right now.

Now moving on to the battle engine once again! I think for AI, I'm just going to do a simple one that makes moves at random for now and move on from there.

Interesting ideas and nice to see you again. So I assume the battle system would be more like Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean series?

And your IDEAS are nice too, keep the good work going!
