Title: M.E.T.A.
Post by: Yeong on June 30, 2012, 10:49:38 am
So this is my new entry that I'm coding and it's working smoothly. :D
So far, I got most of my game mechanics done and some maps as well.

META will be Metroid-like platformer that contains enemy and bosses as well. Since there's not much time left, I'll release the demo by the deadline. :)

I don't think I'll be posting screenshot though, because it'll be a huge spoiler. :D

So far, some awesome thing that works so far is wall scaling and wall jumping. :D

I really hope you can finish the demo in time. :)

So the demo itself is done ;D
Now I'll just gonna "add" some stuff and submit in 7/6 :D (Deadline is 7/8, right?)

If you submit then, this will be the earliest Omnimaga contest submission in history I think? O.O
Good to hear though

Just wanted to clear some stuffs out:
1. the thing that looks like water is lava. That's why you're taking damage.
2. The thing that looks like the spike is actually a grass/moss XP
3. You can kill the enemies with the bullets even though bullets go through. some of them take   some time to kill XD
4. If you quit, it autosaves. when it loads, you start from beginning of the map, but you keep all your upgrades. Just like how Metroid works XD

It looks cool. Haven't tried it though.

Nice, this is a pretty fun game, I just got around to playing it. It's really weirdly glitchy, tho - I ended the game with 65423 health.

O.o how did that happen? O.o
Which part did you get below 0?
----------------------------------DEMO Version----------------------------------------------------

So, since the contest is done, I'm working on a real version now. I'm working on a sprites right now, so there will be no screenshots for a while. But it'll be improved graphic wise and bigger maps. :D

EDIT: For people who didn't read the readme, META stands for Metamorphically Enhanced Transgalactic Astronaut.

It seems that everytime you touch a bouncing thing back and forth, it subtracts 2 from your health. Thus, you just need to get an odd health number, and then let it continuously kill you until you go 1-2=65533.
So here's what I did:
1) Get an odd score (I'm not sure how I did this)
2) Get the MetaBall (couldn't get it to work with other players)
3) go criss cross the enemy, subtracting 12 from your health each time, thus you keep your score odd.

Darn i can guess why now: when you touch the lava, it subtracts 1 hp per frame. That could've caused the problem :\

Just a question, but did anyone managed to do 100% Item run? XD

Nope. I got 6/7 actually. Also nice game. The only suggestion I would have is if you make more versions in the future, you should find do the following:

-Speed upgrade, so we can walk twice faster
-The first Ball thing upgrade should be weaker, so it's less OP. With it I could pretty much go anywhere and if I fell down all I had to do is crawl walls like a spider :P. Maybe one that only lets you crawl walls for half a second so you have to wall-jump (and still can't reach some places if both walls are too far apart)?
-Not have you start right next to an enemy when entering a new room. Maybe move them more in the middle of areas?

Also I am unsure but at one point I think my energy went to 65535 O.O

1. That'll be in later version
2. In later version, you'll get that upgrade WAY later XD
3. Yeah, that was kinda cheap, I guess
4. lot of people told me about that energy glitch, and I know why. I'll fix that in later version. :D

Also don't forget about the boss glitch letting you walk under him then go behind to be protected from any hit while still being able to shoot him. :P

There's a faster way to kill him, and it's MetaBox. :D
Just jump up and down with metabox and you'll kill him quite fast. XD

I'm wondering if people are satisfying with non-scrolling map?

It doesn't only depend on people. If the game can't run fast enough with scrolling maps or if the bluriness is a problem, I think people are fully satisfied by a non-scrolling map. All they want is a good and playable game ;)

since im improving the engine (such as sprites), I was wondering if I should implement scrolling screen. Even though it'll hard for me to do so since all the enemies involved X.x

At this point in development, I would say don't go with scrolling. It would probably involve rewriting most of your code, and the finished product might not even be as good as what you have now.

TBH, I didn't even notice the lack of scrolling. I think the game works fine as is. :) If you want to do a sequel, perhaps add scrolling to that.

you should add acceleration to jumping before scrolling, although that might require redesigning a few areas.

oh, the entire maps will be redesigned, since the map was for testing

Scrolling would be better unless it's incredibly slow or too hard to implement for that type of game.

That reminds me... what does META means? Because it looks strangely close to PETA... O.O

Meta means something purely in the abstract realm. I'm not quite sure what it stands for in this particular game, however :)

It took me a while to think of that name :P
So for now, I have finished the complete redesign of the character sprite.
so little update info: You will be able to shoot up now.

EDIT: Re-designed the title screen as well. what do you think? :D

Looks cool! But maybe the 3d effect is a bit deceiving, since the game isn't a 3d game.(Doesn't bother me, but maybe other people)

However, in my opinion, there is not enough of black ;)

2) maybe just the roof, do some of the panels black? Idk

some greyscale maybe? ;)

Yes, or paint a full wall in black for example, I don't know :)
Just don't restrein the black to the outlines ;)

It looks good Yeong. I think I'd adjust the right side of the N in New to make it a bit longer. It is slightly hard to tell what it is. I also agree, maybe some wall decoration or something would be nice to break up all the white space a bit. :)

@parserp: I would love to, but I'm not skilled in greyscale than I am in monochrome so I'll just stay with B&W :)
