Title: Raising The Dead
Post by: Speler on September 02, 2008, 12:17:35 am
So yeah, I've begun working on this game again (as I promised I would at the end of the summer).  So far it's just trying to figure out my old code (been a while) but I plan on working on items and menus soon.

YAY, nice it's still alive. I was getting worried when you started coming online less and less often, I was afraid you moved on to different stuff. I hope to see new screenies soon :)

Great, this was looking awesome and I can not wait to see it going again! I hate having to relearn code, but sometimes you come up with a more efficient way or can not touch such greatness! Btw you have any old SS?

Sorry, I have no idea what this is, besides know it's a game, any links to a forum that has information on it? description, pictures, etc.?

(for some reasons everytime I see this topic title I always think it's a topic promoting necroposting o.O Idk why)

Ethanderial is a xLIB (or Celtic) RPG featuring animated tiles and the plan was to have a massive world, but I believe now it's intended to be smaller than planned but still quite big compared to a lot of alerady existing TI RPGs. I don't remember if it was ARPG or not and if there were multiple characters per battles, though.

Post by: Speler on September 05, 2008, 11:54:04 am
Thanks DJ, I was just about to post those.  I haven't taken a screenshot in ages apparently, I got some new graphics to show off when I get a break from my homework.

I still haven't given much thought on how the combat will work, so as of now there may or may not be multiple characters whom you can fight with.  I know I want it to be more then just turn based (have some sort of real time mechanics no matter how small they may be).

Ah, those are awesome Speler.... simply put, it looks like the best Basic game animation I've ever seen.
I like the sounds of it, I will definitely download this when it's done, I say keep up the good work, and if I can help with anything, just ask  ;)

Maybe some kind of Ultima-ish tactical battle system?
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: Tribal on September 05, 2008, 08:42:53 pm
I forgot to ask, what is the storyline behind this game?
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: Speler on September 06, 2008, 01:48:55 am
Basically, you have to free the world from demon invaders commanded by the banished god of death (who cannot enter your world).  The actual story is relatively boring, it's going to be the subplots that make it interesting.
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: Netham45 on September 08, 2008, 01:35:34 pm
Care to share some of these subplots?
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 22, 2008, 01:49:26 pm
I missed these last posts. By subplots I assume it means side-quests/optional quests, right? Also how is it progressing?
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: kalan_vod on September 23, 2008, 10:29:20 pm
That would be awesome to have side quests etc, love to see more bro!
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: Speler on September 24, 2008, 12:38:19 pm
Yeah, it's basically all sidequests that make up the larger storyline.  You don't need to beat any of them to beat the game, but good luck doing so.

Anyways, no chance of any work for at least a week or so.  I have so much schoolwork...

So yeah, I've been swamped with work.  I was planning on getting some Ethanderial done over the break but I was bedridden and just watched Scrubs instead XD.

I should be getting a break from work next wednesday through sunday plus I'll have long car rides (I'm following around streetlight manifesto with some friends).  So expect something next week, no idea what, but something.

Here's my ETA for the beta: One day, when you least expect it.  Screenshot two thursdays from now is promised.

I lost my calculator :(.  I have another one at home I asked my mom to send up, but it's an 83+ so things are gonna be moving even more slowly than usual.

Hopefully I can find it...

I found my calculator and got ahead on my work.  I'm gonna be able to do tons this thursday and friday.

Also, my friend started learning z80 asm, I'm gonna direct him here.

w00t! New progress! And I hope your friend likes ASM and continue coding it and hopefully make some games. If you bring him here please let him know about the board rules though, because most people here use TI-BASIC and we do not allow any form of bigotry. I say that because of bad experiences I got with ASM programmers in the TI community before

I started working on this again earlier this week.  Nothing really to share yet, but hopefully there will be soon.
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 22, 2009, 12:49:06 am
Phew I was worried about this project too x.x, since you said you would resume work soon. I think you should go with a smaller game though for your first RPG, or at least a demo with less planned features acting as a full game, then later maybe make a bigger one, because RPGs can be hard to finish, especially near the end. WHen they are incredibly long it is harder to find bugs and we get a bit bored near the end of the project and want to start a new RPG :P

Don't give up though :)

Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: Speler on January 22, 2009, 10:12:37 am
Yeah, the thing is I lost my math notebook from last year.  It has all the maps and story in it, so I'm gonna have to redo that this week (I remember most of it, but there's gonna be some changes I think).

After that I'm gonna install Celtic III, and code in all the maps.

I'm wondering if I should do the basic combat system first so I can add the enemies as I do that, as opposed to a later date which may be difficult.
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: kalan_vod on January 22, 2009, 03:38:33 pm
Well I would consult kevin about that, he has made many combat/rpg combat systems. Sorry to hear of the lost of maps, maybe it will be for the better! Good luck bro

So, I had this sudden inspiration for a pure basic game and I'm gonna be taking a one week break to see if it's actually possible.

Then, whether or not it is I'll return to Ethanderial.

Could I make a suggestion regarding the map scrolling? I noticed that the map only scrolls when your character approaches a border. Wouldn't it look better to center the character sprite and have the map scroll underfoot? It would give the player a better view of the surroundings so they could ascertain the situation. For instance, if the character just moves along the screen borders, the player might run straight into enemies or obstacles without being aware of their presence; having the map scroll underfoot would make such surroundings more apparent.
Title: Re: Raising The Dead
Post by: Iambian on May 30, 2009, 11:37:41 pm
Though I don't know the project, I would believe it's a cheaper form of preventing the tilemap from overrunning its boundaries, since the player would not be allowed to see the outer edges in this fashion. If the tilemap were to be centered on the character, you'd have to make a larger tilemap in the event the character wants to go toward the edge of the map, where the tilemapper would have to then start displaying things outside of its original boundary.

Not sure if that's what it is, but if I were coding something that needed reasonable speed with a smaller size, that's the way I'd do it.

Ah, that makes sense. Designing map-boundaries in Escheron was a pain for this reason, but I opted to do so anyway.

That's one of the reasons, another is for the purpose of puzzles, and not knowing exactly where enemies are standing as you progress through new areas.
