I've been working on a Rally X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally_X) game in Axe parser. I've announced this a few times this weekend on IRC. Anyways I'm gonna try and make it have better graphics, enemys, and maybe a few other things. ATM it does collision through pxltests, though later (soon) I will make it use the tilemaps themselves. anyways here goes...actually I need to switch to windows, so give me just a second
-
Nice, this is Axe Parser, right? I can't wait for screenshots ^^
-
This sounds really cool! Good luck! ;D
-
yeah, axe parser. anyways here's the program (attached). It's already compiled btw.
-
cool I'll download it
And screenshot!
-
Hey that looks great! Especially like the scrolling tile mapper, very impressive. Are you planning to implement the autoturning? Like when you hit a wall, i believe it automatically turns a direction according to the wiki page?
-
I just remembered that I forgot to tell DJ that if you press 2nd it switches to 15 mhz mode, he's gonna make a new screenshot
-
Oooh you should totally port the awesome theme song!! :D
heh, maybe not ;)
-
theme song (/me goes to look through the wikipedia article some more) also I will try to make the turning thing (forgot about that part)
-
And another screenshot when holding down 2nd :P
-
You should try smooth scrolling.
-
That looks really cool. Good luck! O0
-
Awesome! Reminds me a little of pacman, but with a different objective. Can't wait till you finish it!
-
I wonder what will be the final size for maps?
-
well, the final size IMO is just going to be whatever looks good. it will almost undoubtedly be more than 40 tiles tall and probably at least 40 wide. Thanks for all the support. btw I'll be in DC for 5 days starting Wednesday, so I won't have a computer to post anything about this or anything else (unless my dad finds some phone that can do it without service or I steal someone else's phone.) Anyways, next on the agenda is making the map look better, ie not blocks but slightly curved pieces, but that might take up too many tiles, idk. Either that, or just make the map's collisions work by tiles instead of pxl-tests.

How are you storing maps? I'm pretty sure you could easily get 400% compression. ;D

Aaah ok I hope you have fun there.
As for map size will roads also eventually be larger than 8 pixels wide?
-
Ooohhh! I remember this game!!! I played it when I was really young, like 5~6 years old.
I used to love this game. I didn't know the name of the game, and in Korea, I used to call it "Farting Car game" because the screen smoke reminded me of the fart^^
Good luck on this!
-
lol :D

I'm storing them with the same way as my tilemapping program (will find link in a minute). I probably could get some really good compression if I made displaying maps slower, atm I am adding stuff so that it looks better and doesn't have just square blocks, I'll upload pics later of it.
-
Cool, I can't wait for them :)
-
almost have something that looks decent and will be easy to use with tile based collison, should be done in 10-15 mins, then I'll upload it (would you mind doing screenshots, it won't be like the other one where you are the car, its just a scrolling tilemap [no stopping going downwards though])
-
Ok I guess I could make one, just upload and I'll see if I can make one and post it.
-
ZOMG RALLY-X!
This was one of my favorite old-school games ever. I can't wait for a final release.
-
thanks :) I am still working on getting the map to look good (so far, it looks pretty good, but haven't finished the tilemap I wanna show off). Also getting pretty sidetracked with other axe projects (a few I won't mention 'cause I doubt they'll get past anything barely resembling what they should be [can't find sprites that look good D:]). But I'm still working on this one (haven't made the thing where when it runs into a wall it turns). Then I have to tackle the enemies and get good tilemap collison without pxl-test. Anyways that's what I'm working on now.
-
For other projects you could always ask for sprites in the pixel art sub-forum. Some people would be very happy to help you.
-
oh yeah, forgot about that section, eh I'll get the gameplay before sprites on them probably
-
Awesome, I loved this game! Axe can do some really cool stuff. Can't wait for the updated tilemap, heh.
-
well, crap...
I backed up my calc the other day, but apparently I only backed up the ram, then I did a full memory reset, so I lost (almost) all progress on rally-x. The good part is that the main portion of the code was just the tilemapper, so I'll redo that later.
Lesson: backup BOTH your ram and archive
-
x.x that sucks, I hope you don't give up, though :/
-
oh, I won't, it just means I'll have to restart (most of) it, which is fine 'cause I can optimize some code, and start out with collision before pxl-test
-
do you think you could also add smooth scrolling?
-
hmm, sure, how would I go about doing that though...
-
How does the player move now? Does he jump from block to block, or move slowly?
-
well, since I lost most of my work (today I lost my sprite editor I revamped, oh well new features :D) it is just the tile mapper again, I'll add the go-kart sprite Will_W made for me in a while. I'm not quite sure what you mean by block to block versus slowly though
-
x.x sorry to hear you lost the stuff again x.x
I think by block to block, he asked if the movement will be pixel by pixel (smooth movement) or tile by tile (every 8 pixel)
