Title: Rockfall: DT's other game for TI-Concours 2013

For the Axe version of TI-Concours, the first round asked us to make a game of helicopters avoiding meteorites and other things that fall from the sky.

Unfortunately, just like with my TI-BASIC project (http://ourl.ca/15953/), I started much too late (as in on the day it was due) and ended up with a lot of features missing. (And then my link cable didn't work and I had to spend two hours typing the code manually into IES, leaving me late by an hour again. Luckily it's only a one-point deduction, which seems a bit low but I'm not complaining :P)

Here's how the game works. In the first level, it's a pretty standard game of avoidance. Fly your helicopter around to avoid the flying meteorites. Then, in the next level, "ice" meteorites get mixed in with the normal ones. When an ice meteorite hits the ground, it explodes into three smaller pieces (Asteroids (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/215/21592.html)-style), which bounce up to hit you.

Two levels after that, homing missiles come in. This was where I planned to add a little message somewhere saying "HEY, THESE AIN'T METEORITES," as it starts to become evident that it's an alien invasion, but I didn't get around to that for the contest entry. (Two levels after that UFOs were supposed to come in and start blowing the place up, but again I didn't get to that.) All the while, the frequency of asteroids/missiles/UFOs goes up.

I tried to make up for the relative lack of completeness with some graphics—you can see the helicopter's blades turning as the up key is held and the scene getting shaken up by impacts, for example.

Hope you guys like it. I'm planning to finish this up as a small side project, so if you have any suggestions to post I'd really appreciate them!

It looks really cool, though it seems like the action is a bit slow, at least in the first couple levels. I like the graphics and the animations as well as the transition into a full out alien invasion :D Perhaps if you survive the alien invasion you can find a crashed UFO, have a little guy jump out of the helicopter and start commanding the UFO towards the alien's planet to take over their planet?

Looks like a lot of fun :)

I think that you could scale it anywhere from the arcade-style game that it is now up to something pretty full-featured and crazy, depending on what your ultimate goal for the game would be. Whatever you end up releasing as a finished version, however, I'm sure is going to be very good!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've always been really bad at gauging the level of difficulty in my games (probably because I suck at gaming myself), so I often end up making them way too easy or way too hard.

I'll speed it up a bit.

You know, that kinda reminds me of this:

This game will never, ever be made, but a recent post made me realize how cool it would be.

Team Rocket had the right idea, give me a Pokemon game where the goal is to take over the world. Same classic start-up; you get one low-level Pokemon. But instead of capturing Pokemon for sport or for some Professor somewhere, you're building an army. I want to ride on back of a Charizard and light Sliph Co. Tower on fire. Give me hundreds of Pidgey's and let me go Hitchcockian on Pallet Town.

Honestly? By the end of the game I'll have caught a dozen legendary pokemon and about two or three hundred others. That's a standing army, and I want a chance to test the might of my cumulative effort. That's what an RPG should be about, right? Let's strip all the arbitrary rules out of the Pokemon universe and let me become PokeMonarch.
And I think it would be awesome :D Bonus level!

On the other side of the spectrum, for once i actually found the story of a Pokémon game actually engaging in Pokémon Black with Team Plasma. There's also Peta's parody, Pokémon Black and Blue (http://features.peta.org/pokemon-black-and-white-parody/) ;)

hmm, the only suggestions i can think of would be to swap out the landing skids for wheels, as that would make a little more sense with the constant take-off/landing and sliding on the ground, and, if it wouldn't slow things down too much, add a greater vertical area for flying.

The copter can't move when it's on the ground—where it looks like it's doing that, I'm actually lightly tapping the up arrow key to keep it in the air.
and, if it wouldn't slow things down too much, add a greater vertical area for flying.
I actually threw out that idea because it made the game feel too slow (only seeing a portion of the screen).

I guess it would work if meteorites also came in more often, so I'll try that.
