I figure now that I have a new subforum I'll make a screenshot thread.
(http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1394/img001he6.gif) (http://imageshack.us)
Right now I'm working on a scrolling side quest.
-
neat
-
Looking good.
-
looking pretty cool, cant wait to see the side scrolling part!
-
nice, same here. I like how the text show up on the title screen
-
hey thats not bad. glad to see you got a name for the game too. (but plotless was so awesome ^^) i probably missed it somewhere and I dont feel liketrollin around but how'd you come up with the name Lord of the Rings for it? is it based on jrr's stuff?
-
I've figured out an effective way to convert regular images to calc images.
Ignore the text it's just for testing.
-
What would that be? Gandolf looks pretty cool in that pic!
-
i crop, minimize, convert to BW, and use TIconnects screen program to send them, which actually works sort of well.
-
I just crop and convert to Monochrome Bitmap then just use ti-connect without resizing. But it only looks good on certain images so it takes some fudging.
-
I have done that in the past, I thought you found a different way :)
-
Right now I've got my copy of the LOTR and am typing out the conversations right now I'm working on the shadow of the past.
-
wow will all convos be included? O.O the game wont even fit on SE calcs lol
-
It's gonna need to be in chapters I've already decided that.
-
I've come to the decision that it's going to take forever to type everything out so I'm going to condense it some.
-
yeah that's what I thought x.x. Arent all 3 books like 900 pages each? For most calc RPGs I did I had to limit text lenght, especially french versions, to save space and even in retro consoles RPGs I'm sure they tried to do the same
-
nifty
-
Just go by the movies :P, jking!
-
No I like the book more.
-
Here's a demo of a fight engine I've abandoned LOTR to make new game but if you guys could help and balance it.
http://noah.wikidot.com/local--files/files/Battle.zip
-
aw sorry to hear you stopped working on LOTR :(, I'll try your other battle demo later though
-
I just started writing out the dialog for it and I didn't really like it plus if it's my own I can do whatever I wanna do.
-
aaah ok, I understand it must have been friggin long to type too, though, LOTR books are long x.x
-
Yeah, making something out of the air has its high points. You could make it unpredictable (no one knows the story), and do anything you want (as you stated)
-
I've actually started doing stuff on this again. Right now I'm adding enemies that move to the scrolling map.
-
Nice, I can not wait to see how that turns out!
-
glad you're working on it again :)
-
Hey I figure you might all be interested in this it's a text display method input is str1 press down to continue.

Also expect screenshots tonight.

Uhhgg... lost lots of work when I backed up my calc to do a rom clear(Archive corruption) it didn't backup the files that names were past n(Don't ask) thankfully most up the stuff it before n. but it is a slight delay.
-
ouch it sucks, do you know why it happened? I wonder if it could be a celtic/xlib bug
-
I'm not sure thankfully brandonw was on tcpa when I got the bad address error and told me to do a rom clear.
-
BAD ADDRESS is pretty rare I think, but I remember it also was a 83+SE-Only bug that also occured sometimes too. In some very rare occasions, when archiving a program on older OSes (especially 1.13), if you tried to unarchive it again, it gave an ERR:BAD ADDRESS error. The prgm would not unarchive, but your RAM would still decrease anyway every attempt until you RAM clear, but even a RAM clear would not fix the program. When working on ROL1 had I not backed up on my other calculator at the time I would have lost entire programs this way.
-
Here's what I wanted to show you. The hit detection needs to be fixed but the enemy movement is working.
-
is it me or does this seems to run pretty fast for real time action? THis looks nice so far :)
-
Well that's why it's been taking so long I've been optimizing the hell out of it.
-
Cool work bro, are you updating the AI via sprite or tile map? Also, are you only updating him (on the screen) if he is in your field of view? Great sprites if I didnt say so yet ;)
-
The AI is updating via sprite and he only update when he is in your field of vision.and the guard it just a slightly modified version of the person you play as.
-
Nice work.
-
Cool, it seems he is following a path. Is that path in a list or calculated?
-
The path is in the matrix the fraction part of the matrix decides which way he should move therefore no increase in size.
-
It looks good :)

Smart idea ;D But does that mean he's limited to a 9-step pattern? (Although it doesn't mean the position repeats after 9 steps).

Yeah it does mean he can only go in circles.
-
Yeah it does mean he can only go in circles.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a closed path. All you would have to do in that case is define some behavior for when a person hits an edge of the screen (e.g. when they hit the bottom edge have them continue on their path, but replace movement down with up and vice-versa).
-
That could work I'll probably look into that.
-
If you did put it in list, you could have it alternate list upon discovery..Or just one longer list.
-
I'm a little bit confused. Is this still for LOTR? In your post at UTI (a few days ago) you called it "Unnamed rpg", but you stuck that new screenie in the thread for LOTR.
-
Oh this is a new one I just don't have a name for it yet so I haven't bothered changing it.
-
New screenshot when you walk into a house there is supposed to be a fading effect but I've got it with houses and signs. I've been storing the data using decimals the first decimal mainly tells if you can walk on it or not the second decimal deals with what type of object your looking then the final one tells you where to find the data.
-
Cool screenshot ;D Are the houses going to be restricted to 6x4 or will their size vary? (and if it does, how are you handling where to display the sprite?)
-
Nice screeny. The checkerboard tiles were giving me headaches though.. lol
-
The checkerboard is wayy less head-achey on calc.
-
BACON! er.. I mean very nice looking screenies!
-
this is nice ^^
-
BACON! er.. I mean very nice looking screenies!
Mmmm... Bacon.
-
Great looking house! Yeah checker board hurts :P. Glad to see some pretty SS though.
-
New screenshot now you can go behind the guard and stab him plus he can see you this is the beginnings of how fighting may work it will be an action rpg I also will be abandoning the leveling up and currency system.
-
So it will be more like Zelda, right? I like enemies having weaknesses like this btw.
-
Yea it will end up more zelda-ish next to work on is optimizing this and adding a second guard.
-
That looks cool Noah, I'm looking forward to playing this game. :D
-
once you finish the game you might be able to work on the leveling up and currency again...
-
No I'm abandoning it in that it's not going in imagine it more like zelda.
-
like zelda would be cool, there have been few games working this way on calc. Altough I like to level up I liked sometimes to have to do puzzles or search for upgrades such as more hearts or energy tanks. It makes it different in some ways
-
Something else does anyone have ideas for a puzzle type thing for when your captured and have to break out you would have to pick a lock?
@DJ that would be when you have to go and look for items to trade.
-

Hmm you could have it similar to Fallout 3 (not sure if any of you played that), but there were parts where you could pick a lock, and you had to align the pick in the right spot to pick it. While it was very detailed since it wasn't on a calc...you could still having something where they have to align it in the right spot, and if they do it wrong a certain number of times, the guard comes and changes the lock.
-
You are going to have some sort of monetary system though aren't you? It would seem a bit odd without one...
-
Nope no monetary system I want this game to have no repetitive tasks like farming for cash or exp plus money wouldn't be of much use do to the fact that there aren't going to be any shops.
-
Oh well in that case, I guess it makes sense. ^_^ I just kind of assumed there would be shops.
-
So since there aren't any shops, do you just pick weapons up or do you get them from quests or killing guards, or etc.?
-
There aren't weapons in the tradition sense you will have only a couple of weapons right now you have the dagger which you use to kill guards and I'll probably add more later.
-
Ah ok gotcha.
-
Expect screenshots soon of jail.
-
woot for epicness!!
-
Expecting the next time I log on...Dang
-
Well I had a ram clear when I was trying to remember celticIII syntax.
-
ouch....
-
Fuck x.x I hope you didnt lost too much, did you had recent backup? Hoping you can recover enough lost stuff to not have to restart again
-
Oh yea I didn't lose much.
-
if I were you I would keep archiveundelete in a group in case of RAM clears, and archive/unarchive every so often so you have a backup in the archive to get
-
Since I got two 83+ series calcs I generally copy my entire game to my TI-Nspire after coding for a while, debug on my Nspire, then copy back on my 83+ when bugs are fixed. This is a major issue when my Nspire batteries are dead, though, since when removing the batteries you get a RAM clear (unlike the TI-83+, the Nspire doesn't keep RAM programs intact when batteries are remove)
-
That's the reason I have the 84+SE, my friend had Nspire, but it would always RAM clear. This proved to threaten my BASIC development, so I got the purple 84 instead. And then my programs got erased by a goofy ASM program, quite unreliable. Always make archive copies (if there's room).
-
Wait does your 84+SE ram clear or do you mean the Nspire? I do know my Nspire used to randomly mem clear if I didn't interchanged the keyboards properly, like not waiting long enough after turning the calc off. If you mean your TI-84+SE I hope it's not defect x.x because normally a ram reset should fix it and if it fails, a mem clear. Of course, afterward, you still need to be careful though because if you do something wrong with some ASM programs or if they got bugs, you can get RAM clears
-
It's my friends Nspire, not to worry. The TI-84 isn't. I know that assembly communicates with the processor, so I'm careful, though I barely use ASM.
-
If should be coming soon just been really busy lately hopefully I'll finish it before june.
-
OK no screenies for a while because my digital camera isn't working right now and most the stuff I did deals with contrast.
-
:( that's too bad, well hope you get the camera fixed
-
ouch this sucks is it the problem you described earlier on IRC (darkness) or camera stopped working?
-
No actually I fixed my camera it just had dead batteries lol.
-
oh ok, phew
As for darkness, i think the only way to fix it is to make sure that when filming, there's no shadow of you or the camera over the calc screen and that the room has enough light (artificial light will do, since most of my videos were recorded at night). The next thing, though, is to make sure the screen isnt too blurry, and that's the main issue I had for a long while until I figured out how to setup my Canon PowerShot A470 so it wont blur anymore with stuff too close
&fmt=18
Keep in mind that if you use a TI-83+Silver Edition it might be even darker, though, because like on a TI-82 or a TI-83 PARCUS, the LCD green is much darker than on a regular 83+ on it

A friend had the same problem. Contact TI to solve at least with my friend it worked...
It is quite common...
-
Finally managed to get it to work. Sorry for the darkness tried my best to get it to work.
-
well I can't tell much what's happening in the middle of the vid but otherwise it seemed pretty great. Nice work so far
-
So as for lack of progress I've been very busy lately so this project isn't dead as it is more on hold till I find the motivation and time to take it back up.
-
I hope you finish it :P
-
Well I've got 16 years to finish it.
-
;.; :'(
-
lol, only 16?
-
lol, only 16?
16 years until he has the longest calculator game development (http://ourl.ca/3119) of all time.
-
lol nice
-
I've started to work on this a little more and am developing a plot it involves a sword named the sword of a 1000 truths (cookie to anyone who gets the reference) I should have an awesome looking in-game movie which I'll show you guys soon that explains everything.
-
i would give the answer but i heard it on irc so thats not fare any as descussed on irc cheesy jk it sounds good so far
:)
:)
-
screenies soon! :P
-
Ok dj you've motivated me some I'm gonna bust the calculator out after a month and do some writing.
-
well I can't wait to see more progress :)
Try screenie instead of video, though (if any), since your digital cam appears to have crappy quality when recording close x.x
-
Yea it will be screenie but it will take longer due to 64-bit vista sucking.
-
Wow?
-
I heard a lot of people complaining about softwares not running on 64-bit vista x.x
I wonder if Windows 7 will fix this...
-
I hope basically you'll get a screenshot after it's made and I can go to my grandparents house. I've started working on the artwork for it and the main dialog.
-
My friend beta tested it, and he said it was better than XP and Vista
His exact words were: "If XP and Vista had a child, it would be Windows 7, a child that is smarter and more advanced than both its parents"
And I've been ninja'd :)
-
Also, noticing the minimum specs and given the fact I got 2000 and XP to run far under the minimum specs for a while once, I think my old POS PC would run Windows 7 fine if I disabled all the fancy graphics special effects. Windows 7==Windows Vista written properly, it seems. I wonder about backwards compatibility, though...
-
So some more progress on this I've developed a basic plot I've almost finished the intro scene i'll have screenies soon. In other news I've been on vacation getting back tomorrow using hotel wifi.
-
ooh nice to see progress, screenies soon?
I alerady got a Tribute video done so far, but it's not finished. I need to add more screenshots. The song I'm using is too short so I will most likely change it to fit more stuff. Else, what I thought about is to actually use two songs.
-
The screenshots are on the way.
Edit:The screenshots have arived
(http://noah.wdfiles.com/local--files/misc/INTRO.gif)
-
YAY!
Nice so far :D, i also like the TVF-style scrolling
