Title: Super Crate Box
Post by: leafy on November 18, 2011, 11:45:13 pm
Coming soon to a calculator near you.

This was more a test of feasibility than anything else; I don't know if I'll finish this or how fast it'll end up being, but nevertheless I had to give it a shot :P

It's a port of the famous game SCB, and there will be enemies and actual sprites in the future. Someday.

Interesting, I have no clue what SCB is, though.  I like the gun shot animation :D

I also don't know The Game but it looks pretty sweet already.

Just watched a part of this youtube vid. Insane. And those shaky effects really fit with you Leafiness0. :P

Nope. It's my massively improved/optimized pseudo-physics engine, specially tailored to the needs of SCB :P

Sorry guys. Some of you might know this already, but I lost all my files due to my own negligence. I will not be continuing this project, but am already working on something far more epic for the Cemetech contest (hint puzzle platformer involving copious particles :D) Again, sorry, I know a lot of you were looking forwards to this.

Too bad though, but I can understand I guess. Good luck with your new project and if we're lucky someone might take this game over. :)

I might use some ideas from this, or more specifically the minigun, in Essence...

And yeah, progress loss != fun stuff :\
Almost lost a large project to a RAM clear sometime in the past, but Omnicalc's RAM restore brought it back so yay \o/

Title: Re: Super Crate Box

Hm I could pick this up as a side project.  Aside from already having the SHMUP theory down (and re-made one of the weapons in about 20 minutes for Essence :P), I'd be able to get some practice in with enemies and such for the larger project ;D

Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: Darl181 on November 28, 2011, 10:24:12 pm
Ok so it's official: I'm picking this up as a side project. ;D
A question for those who've played it: how does it handle collisions with the walls floor etc?  ie when it hits the side of the platform does it bounce or just kind of stick?

Edit July 2013: ...and this didn't really go anywhere. For an scb project that actually got presentable, see http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/452/45238.html
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: leafy on November 28, 2011, 10:34:06 pm
The recoil from some guns (the minigun especially) makes you stick to walls (due to pseudo-friction). This is the actual game, BTW.
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: Darl181 on November 28, 2011, 10:35:13 pm
So normally it bounces off?
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: leafy on November 28, 2011, 10:36:39 pm
No, it just sets your velocity to zero and doesn't do anything else.

Ok I've pretty much finished the weapons, now for the actual crates :P

Also having fun trying to figure out a more optimized way to do bullet collision detection x.x
Spoiler For code stuffs:
If {W}r+16>>X
If {W}r-32<<X
If {W+2}r+16>>Y
If {W+2}r-32<<Y
{W+4}r*2→S
{W+6}r*2→T
sub(DLB)
.remove bullet
Goto EBL
End
End
End
End

Haven't tried it, but
Quote from: Axe
If {W}r-X+15<47
If {W+2}r-Y+15<47
should work for the first four lines :)

In general, if you want to test if A between M less and N greater than B (A+M>>B and A-N<<B), use A-B+M-1<M+N-1, especially if M and N are constants. If you want, I can post a full explanation later.

Title: Re: Super Crate Box

It's still being worked on :)
Atm I'm trying to work out some way to ensure it doesn't pick the same location for a crate twice, but I think I have it now...
Also I'm making the SCB-specific weapons, such as the Disc Gun and revolver.
(btw they should work with Essence--so when I finish this I have like 5 new weapons ready-to-roll for the larger project :D)

Well you can tell him it's in active dev :P
Anyway I have most of the weapon stuff finished, just need to sprite etc.  Maybe make guns for the char to hold as well, and the weapon switching effect (old weapon dropped, crate disappearing in a puff of smoke)

Ok I was just looking at the official site (http://supercratebox.com) and there's multiple levels, also multiple char sprites.

(official trailer)

I'm downloading the PC version atm to check the various things, map out the levels etc.
Looks like this is going to be bigger than I thought

Post by: Darl181 on December 16, 2011, 02:48:05 pm
It's coming along nicely.  I just made this sort of stats table for the weapons last, and am in the process of putting them in.
Also driving myself nuts trying to make a fire animation that runs fast, trying to throw together a series of sprites but it's looking kind of weird so yeah.  It might end up just being random pixels or something :P
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: saintrunner on December 20, 2011, 11:07:39 pm
updated screenie?
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: Darl181 on December 20, 2011, 11:48:23 pm
It's getting close... ;)
I'm playing around with how the weapon projectiles are displayed, the way I'm doing it in Essence may be optimized code-wise but you end up with something like 4 or 5 of the same sprites :P
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2011, 11:55:02 pm
I'm glad this didn't die, this seemed pretty promising. And yeah it's always good to do backups in case. X.x (and to remember to do them)
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: Darl181 on January 07, 2012, 01:56:04 am
Sorry about the slow pace of updates over the past week or so...over the break things have been pretty busy at home x.x

In any case I should be able to get back in the game within the next week, with school I'll actually be able to get some coding done \o/ Doesn't make much sense, but it's what happened last year so yeah =P

I may or may not make a complete port of SCB, mainly because my mind's kind of moved on to Essence and I keep finding myself thinking up planet names, plotline, bonuses and etc.  No more details on that...yet ;)
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: saintrunner on January 07, 2012, 01:37:11 pm
Well I hope this gets eventually finished, but take your time, there is no rush :)
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: Darl181 on January 10, 2012, 02:31:48 pm
I'm starting to make progress on this again. :)
Once I figure out why all the weapons have suddenly decided to start crashing over the past day*, and fine-tune them (stuff like making the mines not go through the ground and etc), I can start on the enemies.

*this is really weirding me out...I haven't changed the bullet deletion code for the past couple weeks or so (it crashes when they go off the side of the screen). 0.o

Edit: found the problem.  Turns out it was an extra End that slipped into a library somehow, at the same time as one disappearing elsewhere.
Now to revert all these attempted fixes... x.x

Progress is going a lot slower than it would normally go...it's a combo of mid-terms, 18th b-day and a few other things :/

On the plus side life should be getting back to "normal" soon, so I should be able to get back in the game and get some progress done. :D

Didn't Matrefeytontias take over this project last year for one of the contests and finish it?

EDIT Nvm saw that link. I wonder if the projects are related at all, though.
Title: Re: Super Crate Box
Post by: Darl181 on October 17, 2013, 10:06:39 pm
Yeah, the calc used for development got a bit unstable and the project died while I was trying to get it running again. :/

As mentioned above, Matrefreytontias made (and actually finished :P ) his own version here (http://ourl.ca/17068). Ticalc link (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/452/45238.html), same as two posts above.

I started my version from scratch, it's not related to this version at all. I think that this one looks better actually.
