Title: The Journeys of Pyyrix the Thief
Post by: Ashbad on March 27, 2011, 09:35:20 am
The reboot of the critically acclaimed game, 'Pyyrix's Most Excellent Adventures' is now in development!  Why a reboot instead of a new version?  Because this new reboot will have so much more that wasn't possible with the heavily unoptimized Pyyrix 1.0:

-- more than 80 types of unique tiles with special effects that put the original chip's challenge to shame!
-- Updated sprites and tiles!
-- Smaller level size! (whereas 10 levels in Pyyrix 1.0 took 36K, this game may reduce 10 levels to 7-9K TOTAL!)
-- Better puzzle solving and level design, 10 more original levels!
-- Old school flashbacks with the original 10 levels included in compressed form!
-- The ability to make not only your own levels, but your own level packs, with 10 levels per pack!
-- more than 10 new items in addition to the original 7!
-- Checkpoint system!
-- Storyline and Cutscenes!
-- NPC interaction to help you solve puzzles!
-- And MUCH MORE!

Well, start supporting the project today with providing input so I can see what exactly YOU want, YOU feel is lacking, and what YOU think could make this game mcuh more awesome than the original!

As for the First news post, I shall post a screenshot showing the updated sprites for pyyrix, the main character:

The thief sprite truly looks like a thief, and the platform engine looks great too :D

Nice job.

feature request: smoothscrolling

feature request: smoothscrolling

Another feature request, the left and right walls could have different colour blocks or different shapes, when the player is falling, it doesn't look like falling because the wall always looks the same.

good ideas!  However, squidget, IDK about smooth scrolling, it would make the game look a little better graphics wise, but would steal the old school aurora that I'm aiming for -- I'll have to think about it.

Eh, I think the first mario was smooth scroll still. Besides the graphics aspect, I think it would make the game a lot more playable and enjoyable :/

I have to agree with squidgetx, it's Axe, smoothscrolling is not that hard (Horizontal, Vertical) and it would make the game much cooler.

The thing is, this is more of a blockdude puzzle game, or ship's challenge platformer if you prefer that instead -- not really an action platformer.  Smooth scroll would be perfect for the latter, but not the former.  Most people complained that the first one was too action-based and not puzzle-based, so for this one smoothscroll shouldn't be necessary.  It's not another physics based game ;)  I could make one with utmost ease, but this isn't it.

Ah, it's a more like puzzle game, good enough then, the smoothscrolling is not that needed, but would still be cool.

Feature Request: A checkpoint system.  I'm not sure if you ever added it to the first Pyyrix, but I think it's a really, really good feature to have. ;)

I can't wait for more progress.  Good luck! ;D

Wow I like the main sprite, it reminds me a ninja or something. Try to not fall into the endless rewrites loop, though, so it gets finished one day. D:

I hope to be able to play this soon. Also i agree checkpoints should be added.

Are you still planning to update the original Pyrix, though, if the 2nd won't include the old levels?
Title: Re: The Journeys of Pyyrix the Thief
Post by: Ashbad on March 27, 2011, 03:09:15 pm
The second will include the old levels, but I'll recreate them myself with my new editor, which will compress them as well.  So, you would only have to worry about 1 appvar for all 10 levels ;D So, you would like this too, it's like a mix of the old and new ones ;)

And yeah I'm rewriting it, but the way I'm doing it is so I don't ever have to again -- it's already much more optimized than before ;D This will be the only rewrite, I don't think I would enjoy doing more than that ;)

Yeah, so that way from the get-go you have 20 levels -- and that will be a TON of gameplay -- and I'll release more official ones as time goes by ^-^

but for now, maybe I should stop thinking so far ahead and just finish the engine ;D

Damn, is this game looking so cool >.<

I already have 20 different tiles done, including:

-2 normal blocks
-ladder
-lava
-springs (new!)
-one way tiles
-black and white switches that change corresponding blocks on and off (really cool and new -- this can create so awesome of puzzles on their own!)
-and more, can't tell you everything ;)

so, this is going good ;)

Here is a little taste of pyyrix 2's gameplay!

Warnings:

you must have PLV1.8xv in RAM to play.
you must have an additional 4000K of RAM to play
I'm not responsible for any crashes.  (there are no bugs though)

Gameplay:

It's a bit fast for now (waayy too fast, It'll be muuuch slower later)
pretty much the exact same controls as pyyrix 1, except press MODE next to a switch to flip it
etc.

I plan on posting a screeny in a minute or two -- please do not post one yourself until I do one first.  Thank you ;)

I just tried it and it looks nice. I like the power ups. However you definitively need to do something about the speed. O.O
Title: Re: The Journeys of Pyyrix the Thief
Post by: Ashbad on March 31, 2011, 07:00:04 pm
is it fast, but you must have the emu in 200% speed O.O  that's faster than IRL

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 31, 2011, 07:38:59 pm
Weird I was actually at 1% ???

Wabbitemu capture speed might be messed up at this speed. It's supposed to bring back the speed at 100% in the gif, but I guess it isn't accurate...

either way, thanks for the screeny ^-^ it forces people to have to try it for themselves anyways >:D

No updates to show yet -- haven't added much to the engine yet since last leak, but I am working on a boss title screen!  Maybe I'll post it later today if I finish then.

My loyal and devout pyyrixians -- thanks for supporting this project, unlike tanf not as many people really care about it.  This makes me even more motivated to show them what they missed xD. Progress going nicely, but I'm a bit busy ATM to get much more done.  Though tomorrow I should get more varieties of tiles done, at which point I can finish the engine pretty soon...

...which is where you guys can help! :D

You see, pyyrix is like that old Mario 1.2 game on ticalc, it doesn't come with preloaded levels.  I personally will be busy creating a new map set and a reboot of the old ones with pyyrix 1, so I won't be able to make more than 2 sets, they take forever to make x.x

So, I'll soon call upon those in the community interested in making map sets to be packaged in the .zip file along with the game!  I'll accept all entries and give credit (special way, you'll see how ;)) to those who help, but first, I gotta finish the editor and engine once and for all, and then we can crank 'em out! :D

Maybe you can ask people (like me, maybe?) to create maps so you have less work (of course, if you have a map editor)

I've now finished around 10 more tiles (sorry I know that sounds lame, but I can promise to add another 100 over the next week :))

In which case, I'll take some requests.  Anybody want certain tiles in particular?

Could I have a list of a couple of the existing ones first?  :P  also, I hope its less buggy than Mario 1.2  :P

Well, first off, there's absolutely no bugs at all ATM, I personally have done over 3 hours of testing so far :)

Second, here are the current action tiles:

Water
Lava
Ladder
One way all directions
Locked doors
Explodable doors
Spikes
2 types of blocks with 2 different switches
Springs
Crumbling blocks
Slippery blocks

:)

Fake blocks.  :P  Make them allow you to fall into a place such that you need to think to get out of it.  :P  And it needs to be indistinguishable from the real blocks.

EDIT:  btw, I got a support userbar for TaN:F!

Have you considered putting 'DEVELOPER' more to the right? I think it'd look better.
