Title: Unnamed puzzle platformer
Post by: aeTIos on October 09, 2011, 10:44:28 am
Hi guys.
First things first:
! 4M 1337 w007!!!! 7H475 3P!C
 :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:
Back to reality.
I am creating a puzzle platformer in which you have to use buttons, crates, doors (just like as Tag, Graviter and Portal X). I am also adding transport tunnels like those in portal 2. Screenies when I get the engine finished.
Oh, if you have an idea for a name, please say it.

A name... PortalZ ? :P
Great idea though ! Good luck !

Also, if you need help, PortalX's source was released somewhere.

How about adding a space? I personally think Portal Z looks cleaner. That's a nice idea, too.

Combination?
How 'bout Obfuscation?
I'll be able to come up with some better names once I know more about this. Get to work on that screenie! :P

Just think of a word that sounds epic, and dark, and otherwise cool. Like, Futility. 'Cept you can't name your game Futility, cause I'm reserving it. ;)

That's "too stupid; didn't translate"

We know absolutely nothing about the game except what objects might be in it.

But if there's going to be no more interesting mechanics I guess we can call it "Random Crap"

I think he was trying to make that one word, like pohr-talz

What I ended up doing for Essence was
1) Come up with random word
2) Open http://thesaurus.com
3) Click around at random until something likely is found
:P

Another idea would be to somehow make an acronym, like I almost had Dimension Shift as "S2" (Shifting and Switching)

Just a few ideas to get the mental gears turning ;)

Samebull: Harsh, Guy! True stuff, but still.
Here's another name for the game: In Vain

Tips to making a platformer:

1) Find a really innovative (or at least unusual) mechanic that your game will revolve around.
2) Choose a name that's short and concise (fits in the 8-char limit :P)

Is this going to use Zedd? That would be awesome ^^

Ideas for names off the top of my head:
SURVIVE
FLIP
ZARQUICK (like I said, off the top of my head)
QUAM
NUCLEAR

Maybe its going to use zedd. I have a question: Is prgmZEDD the full lib (ie, with rope libs and so)
By the way, i'm not creating a sequel to portal 2, i'm just using elements from it.
:o Is Insight a cool name?

Cool! Can't wait. What size tiles are you using, 8*8, 5*5, or something else?

Might want to shoot him a PM, or make a seperate thread, or ask him on IRC, or something like that that will catch his attention better.

5*5.
Buttons are still a crime to get working :(

By the way, Axe or BASIC? 5x5 sounds like a job for BASIC, but your original post seems like it's for an Axe project.

Axe, of course.
Can someone help with buttons? I have this idea: when a button is found in the tilemap, store it in an appvar, then after the map is drawn, draw the buttons. For pressing buttons: constantly check if you are above a button (coordinates). Who has a better idea?

Geez, rewrote the whole engine! buttons work now, I have moveable blocks, doors, :D

Sorry, didn't check this thread :P
Um, so the way I do it is use a For( loop to check if there are any pixels whereever the button is, and if there are, then the button is depressed, and if it isn't, then it's not. I can PM some code to you if you want.

Any screenshots if you're still working on this?

This is (I think) more something I am going to create like a physics playground. Or maybe not. But I am still working on this, yep.
Leafy, I do buttons the other way round, I let the character check. But probably your method is better if you have lots of moveable objects :x
Btw, I might add some portal 2 things like the excursion funnel.
