Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Radical Pi on October 14, 2006, 03:37:00 pm
~History~
Years ago I was a fan of that 'great' game Runescape. But being a dialup user it would constantly not work. So one day I decided to make my own version, a tabletop RPG game that I hoped would be fun for more than just me. That one afternoon I came up with nothing except the name for the planet, Mmruda. Then came the names of the continents, then it slowly got a backstory of Knights vs Wizards, but nothing too fancy. After a month or two I had the rulebook, the starter items, the battle system. It was basically a very unorganized two player game where both players had around 7 sheets of paper with their items/weapons and kept track of everything else whatever way they decided to. I had like 6 other people make characters, and the farthest any of us got was Level 4.
Then came summer. The lonely time where all I had was thinking time. Seeing the obvious failure of WoM so far, I decided to redo it into a card game, following in the footsteps of the Yugioh craze. Lets just say it had Failure Attack on every card...
So back to tabletop. still nothing new came to me. I guess this was the real first time the idea died.

Next would come the greatest thing to happen yet: I got an 84+SE for high school. I learned to program over the summer, slowly but steadily. I've never been quick with self-teaching, which is probably why I'm still at this point, but back to the story for now. I started joining calculator forums, mainly UTI and Omnimaga, in October. I started getting respected and immediately wtf'd at it. I was nowhere near good, yet I was being accepted into the 'elite' programming groups with ease. I assumed I just gave off the impression that I knew what I was doing, or at least wanted to try. Finally I made the connection I should have before. Why not make Mmruda a calc RPG?
Happy New Year 2006! After a very successful spam topic here (you know, and we're doing it again, right? :Dbiggrin.gif) I revealed I had this big RPG project as my thing to do here at Omnimaga. January saw huge motivation, I've probably not done as much as then. And then came the 27th. At 7:48 GMT-5 WoM became a Featured Omnimaga RPG. As I wrote in my WoM ideas notebook, "Oh my Goshin' God!" This is where I started to slow down. I had Government Ailment. I did a little, said I was doing a lot, and you all believed me.
But I did go through a lot of big changes in this. It was originally full screen ASCII, then became splitscreen ASCII on Horiz mode. But if you walked on the bottom line, it erased the border. So it was made into full graphscreen with overlapping ASCII and a line at -.2 on ZStandard I think it was. That's as big as production went, besides what I released in demos.
Then came the recent summer. I left for a little vacation, but found it hard to come back. Yet I did, last month I returned for another year. I found Omnimaga suffering from the damage of summer and inactivity, but decided it would quickly grow back. I posted some more that WoM was alive and going, but you doubted me, and you were right. WoM was inactive, but nowhere near dead. Just rotting in the form of a half-year old demo in my half-year old sig.

Now the story turns... fishy. I made a topic titled "So long" but it was really about how I made a Realsound version of http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jengajam.com%2Fr%2Fdolphins-so-long-thank&ei=lJsxRZK0Jo7QwQKAj7ioAQ&sig=__a9lBWkEIq8NdVCmurp0biltAR7s=&sig2=d1ui3zS4HRuaVpzwrZaN3Q song. It got the attention I expected it to, given the current state of things here. But one thing xlibman mentioned got to me, and now I have to thank you for saying "and you are one of the 3-4 inactive staff." It got me thinking, and got me to program a little. It was only an unfinished Tic Tac Toe, to see if I really did have what it takes to do this stuff.
So, today I was doing a little on the AI. I opened the catalog to get sum(. Instead I decided to see the syntax of Tangent( with Catalog Help, a preloaded 84+SE App. Blank screen. My first Ram clear of the year. Then I realized I had everything unarchived for Realsound. ^^ So long WoM, SMASCII, and thanks for all the fish. Luckily like I said I haven't done anything to them in months and the archived group files will be good, but Tic Tac Toe on the other hand...

In short, its a new year and I'm ready to go.

nice post I didnt knew how it all started o.oblink.gif... WAIT MMRUDA IS RUNESCAPE CLONE???????????? *KILLS* errr. j/k... I really cant wait to see next updates :)smile.gif it was one of the project i looked forward the most.

for some reasons that post reminded me the new form of artificial inteligence post in the ASM WFRNG1.000069 news article, just missing the caps lock :Dbiggrin.gif

At first, it was more like a D&D clone. Now its more like an Illusiat 12 clone (still the only calc RPG I've played, I didn't exactly connent with RoL3). WFRNG had AI? :Dbiggrin.gif

@Killplayer I'm glad you used 'love' in past tense.

Mmrudan Mythology coming soon, as soon as I have a free hour to write it.

Yeah, I didn't realize I was lv255 at the end and kept training two or three hours. It was just the ERR: MEMORY that kept it down, but you notified that in the readme (which I didn't read at the time)

ROFL yeah thats one of the only calc game that goes that high in levels i think, altough it require special items such as Level limit, hp limit, mp limit, etc, which you may be familiar with if you ever played FInal Fantasy 10

Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Radical Pi on December 31, 2006, 09:55:00 am
I've been thinking, if I'm using xLib anyway I might as well do full sprites, or even grayscale. But the layered text was my main gimmick, so I'm not sure.
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2006, 11:02:00 am
layered txt! that was great
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Radical Pi on December 31, 2006, 12:04:00 pm
Layered Text
+use strings (each screen is 256 bytes)
-several combinations, but all in simple patterns that don't work 'perfectly' (not a sprite for every thing, but close enough)

Sprites
-use pic vars and matrices (each screen is 1200 byte matrix plus at least one 768 pic var.
+unlimited graphics capabilities, minus pixel limits ;)wink.gif
-requires xLib (this is only a con if considering Omnicalc, and I was)

tough decision...

which elements does it need in particular? Like your attack, enemy defense, enemy attack, enemy defense, hit rate, etc?
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Radical Pi on December 31, 2006, 02:37:00 pm
BL, Str, Sor, Com, Def, Aur, Spd, WM in no particular order. I've been putting off doing the equations for at least two years. :Dbiggrin.gif

And every time I try to do them, I make a completely different equation. So I have at least five different versions of the same battle system, with each one being the 'Final Version'...
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2006, 02:51:00 pm
what does they stand for? o.oblink.gif
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Radical Pi on December 31, 2006, 03:02:00 pm
Battle Life (the HP), Strength, Sorcery, Command (for controlling beasts like dragons), Aura (magic defense), Speed, Weapon Mastery (total skill with weapons)
I also had things like Endurance, Evasiveness, Accuracy in there in some versions, but Acc is more of an attack-specific stat I'd say.
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 31, 2006, 03:17:00 pm
ok thanks, maybe I'll get an idea on a formula, do you want it to be random?
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Delnar_Ersike on December 31, 2006, 07:19:00 pm
Here is my suggestion for the battle equation:

Each creature (including you) needs to achieve a certain number of "speed points" in order to perform an action. How fast the creatures accumulate points is up to their speed, meaning, if a creature has tons of speed, it can accumulate points way faster than a slower creature and therefore perform more actions than the slower creature.

For Accumulating Points:
Speed/[1+(Enemy Command/100)-(Command/100)] -> Total Points Accumulated in one "turn"

Notes: If somehow the denominator is not positive, then:
Speed[1+(Command/100)] -> Total points accumulated in one "turn"

For normal attacks:
Strength[1+(WM/100)+(Command/100)+Weapon Power] -> Total Damage
Speed*2[(WM/100)+(Command/100)+Armor Power] -> Total Defense
Battle Life-(Total Damage-Total Defense) -> Current Battle Life

Notes: You can change all the (/100)'s into (/any number): I just put /100 because most games allow you to have really high stats. Weapon Power is how good your weapon is and Armor Power is how good your armor is.
Current Battle Life cannot be greater than Battle Life

For Magical Attacks:
Sorcery[1+(Command/100)+Spell Power]+Extra Mana Sacrificed -> Total Damage
Aura*2[(Speed/100)+(Command/100)+Armor's Magic Resistance(can be negative] -> Total Defense
Battle Life-(Total Damage-Total Defense) -> Current Battle Life

Notes: Again, you can change the (/100)'s. Spell Power is how strong the spell is, armor's magic resistance is how magic resistant your armor is, and you can choose if you wish to add the "Extra Mana Sacrificed" option so the creature can spend extra mana on the spell to make it stronger (but not a lot stronger).
Again, Current Battle Life cannot be greater than Battle Life

Running away depends on:
[(Your speed/100)+(Your command/100)-(Enemy Command/100)-(Enemy speed/100)]% chance. You can increase or decrease the odds at your will.

This was just an engine I thought up right now, so it isnt the best of engines. You may also have ideas you may want to add to it, for this engine is only a skeleton. It's up to you :Dbiggrin.gif !

You're a good motivational speaker :)smile.gif

Good news, I finalized the eight stats! Only took two full years...
I have decided that instead of doing the battle system next, I'll go in the order that the game will progress: the rest of the intro, walking, the slaying of all the innocents of the village, *decides to not give away more spoilers*

I might get a little confused with it because me and a friend are also finally starting the basis of the MMORPG version too.

It is possible to make an MMORPG-style game that has multiplayer. I posted a question once on RevSoft that asked "Is it possible to link more than two calculators together?" and the answer was "Yes".
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 23, 2007, 08:18:00 am
yeah I've known this for a while, you just need the required tools for multiplayer. In asm you need to write a linking routine and in basic you have to use the Zcom routine on ticalc.org

While I was planning on several multiplayer features (battling, trading items, whatever) I wasn't planning on Massively Multiplayer...

The CalcWoM will have only the three original classes wizard/beastmaster/knight. But the MMO will have several new ones (including the all-powerful Psion)

Beastmaster? What's that? Kind of like a druid/fighter combo? :???:confus.gif

Remember, you don't want to overpower one class over the other. Sounds to me like the Psion may be too powerful in the MMO...Also, don't forget Warlock (o/t Warlocks rule! Ph34r the Warlock! o/t)! :Dbiggrin.gif

Lucky I got bored and checked 'Find Topics by this User' in my profile, or I wouldn't have known you posted here...

I'm currently planning for The War of Mmruda to be the first book in the Chronicles of Mmruda series. And on the chance that I finish it someday, and then that it gets made into a movie, and then that they decide to make an 'official video game of the movie', I want to be the one to make it (I won't stand for it being made into a horrible 'movie game').
The only reason that's making me hesitate continuing with the calc WoM is that it would spoil the plot for the book. And I don't really want that...

So, in summary, The Destined is taking over. I think I'm going to make a Basic+xLib version, then an ASM version when I finally learn ASM...
(sees that it's 3:14 PM) lol.

Could you not delete this WoM forum yet though? The Progress topic is Topic #42... and this one is #742 o.oblink.gif

Oh, that...
I'm sure you noticed that our founding idea was 'out there'? The forum has been invaded a few times before. First by some 'Legion of Legato', then again by I don't know who, and a couple weeks ago we were hit with over one hundred of a similar IP from the same location. So I disabled guests. Post by: Radical Pi on July 25, 2007, 01:55:00 pm
No, I checked the IP. We don't have any members in Sunnyvale California...
And the first invasion was absolutely crazy. We had at least 20 people join and spam the board with pr0n. Their smart idea was to flood us with images that go against the TOS and then turn us into invisionfree to get the site deleted. I laugh at the simplicity of this plan...

This is getting a little off topic though. Does anyone have any obscure questions about Mmruda? I probably have an answer :Ptongue.gif
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion

Those 20 peoples are not people, they are spambots. We got this a while ago here too. Notice the most user online record: 400+ bots tried to sign up/post in  one hour, but admin validation was on so yea we are safe ;)wink.gif

I dont have much questions about mmruda besides that i wonder if it will be the same story than in the old game demo? And your sigs scare me a lot they always make me think you're plannning to quit even if you say you won't x.x
Title: War of Mmruda: Discussion
Post by: Radical Pi on July 25, 2007, 02:46:00 pm
I'm pretty sure they weren't spambots, because there were also users that joined during the invasion with names like "I'm not with them", and they PMed us with info on where they were all coming from. I was planning on saying this in the last post but decided to take it out as worthless information :Ptongue.gif

Honestly, it isn't. It's been pretty low on my priority list recently, and it's going to stay down there for a while if I stick to my word and stop procrastinating learning Japanese, and if I start making that Super Mario Bros clone in Visual Basic like I've been planning, and plenty of other random projects. But thanks for the interest!^^ Knowing people are interested will definitely motivated me. Plus, I've been more interested in writing recently...

Today I was planning on making a topic in my Projects forum about what project I should take on next... totally slipped my mind, but thanks for the indirect reminder :Ptongue.gif

I just decided to do it in VB because it's probably one of the worst possible languages to try it in. Loading levels will probably take a long time, at my current stage of knowledge (sequential access files... computer programming as a school class goes so slow...).
@Timers: good idea! I didn't think of that yet, but I probably would have somewhere down the road. *is saved of five minutes of thinking*
Maybe I'll also include a Level Editor...

But that's for a different topic.

It's always fun to try some challenges like programming in limited language. Isn't this what most BASIC programmers do anyway? %)rolleyes2.gif

xLIB users try to show how far you can push a game using xLIB without learning ASM and pure BASIC programmers push BASIC limits to extreme even more because they show how far a game can be pushed without using any ASM lib or programs at all.

And I saw a pretty nice VB game a while ago by an old MaxCoderz members but i forgot the link :)smile.gif

I think that's the common theme with me: I like to push the limits. TI-Basic, VB (eventually), even written english - it's just fun to push myself to new heights. That's why calculators were so appealing to me at the subconscious level. Consciously, just because I wanted to learn to program and that ever-present "I'm a nerd. Nerds like calcs" mental definition. But under all that... The true attraction lied in the foreboding sense of limitation; the subliminal curiosity to see how far I could take it before I hit the limit. I haven't hit the limit yet, but I've gotten to my limit for now. So a little vacation with some VB coding!

... My english went out of control for a minute O_Oshocked2.gif
