Title: Yumé 2: Rika's Story [Adventure/RPG, Series]
Post by: TsukasaZX on August 23, 2010, 11:22:28 pm
Yumé 2: Rika's Story is the sequel to Yumé.

This game centers around Rika, Nanami's friend, and her adventures in the Dream World. The overall tone of the game will be a lot darker and it will answer questions raised in the first game as well as pose new ones.

Rika's Story will also sport several graphical changes, a few of which are:
 - The game will employ text boxes for dialogue like a typical RPG (whereas the first game's sole text came in the form of Nanami's diary entries). This is due to Rika being more upfront and talkative while Nanami is more shy and keeps to herself. There are also plot-centric reasons for this.
 - The game is designed to support 55 or more different 8x8 pixel tiles (the first game used only 22)
 - Currently the game reuses 2 tiles and 1 sprite from the first game.
 - Currently the game has 22 new tiles and 4 new sprites.

I expect to finish this game by November.

Current title screen. Only pic because I'm still working on sprites.

One of several trailers. This is the pre-production hype trailer :P

Glad you do! It'll be a while before I can show off animated screenshots. I want to get a graphical map of the Dream World finished before I code any of it.

Sounds cool!  Good luck on it! ;D
Thank you!

Also, on to game progress: Yumé 2 now employs 4 old tiles (water tiles), 1 old sprite, 29 new tiles, and 4 new sprites

They're my favorite part too :D

Also, another map update:

As you can see, the Dream World in Yumé 2 is going to be a LOT bigger than the Dream World in Yumé. Including the empty rooms, that's only about 50-66% of the map.

In addition to 4 water tiles, I've borrowed the grave/tombstone tile as well. Current count is: 5 old tiles, 1 old sprite, 34 new tiles, and 4 new sprites

Yes, I did all of the sprites myself. I think I'm starting to develop a knack for it ^^

Thank you! I think I'll scrap together some concept images of game play so I can show off some neat changes :P

Again, I'm not doing any actual coding until the graphical map is entirely finished. That way, if I find mistakes or want to change layouts, I won't have to trudge through massive amounts of code to update it for real.

It will most likely be finished by sometime in November at the latest. Although, considering the rate development is going, I doubt I'll even need that long.

The coding behind the game is actually really quite simple. It's just tedious to input event and map data X_x

Yumé 2's map is so freaking huge...

For those who may be wondering, the Dream World map in Yumé 2 is currently expected to be 48 rooms. The Dream World map in Yumé is roughly 27 rooms.

Wow that's quite large. It's sure gonna be interesting ^^

I kinda dislike when I play a RPG and each dungeon is like 2-3 rooms long

I haven't played many RPG games on my calc and the ones I have were in ASM. How can 2-3 rooms constitute a dungeon? O_o

Generally, in the past, people simply used pics to store their dungeon areas, literally. They used one for the title screen, one or two for temporary stuff and 3 or 4 for the 4 rooms, then went close to run out of pics or RAM. Illusiat 2002 did that with a small amount of maps, actually x.x (although a lot of maps in the game were generated with lines and text). There are a lot of good basic RPGs, but you need to search hard. There's a good collection in  Omnimaga archives, actually.

Also nice looking so far. Is the screenshot from a regular 83+?

That seems highly impractical but I suppose, pre-xLIB/Celtic/et al, you had to do what you had to do.

The screenshot is from a regular 83+ running OS 1.19.

Nah there were other ways around that before, even in pure BASIC. You just had to draw your sprites with lines and text or use home screen. It did the job back in the days. Using pics the way I described was the worst thing to do, unless you re-use the same pics multiple times.

Yeah, it's BASIC+xLIB. I might swap to using Celtic III for the third game though. Depends on what I'll need.

Yeah, it's real-time. *is slightly confused*

Suddenly, inspiration for another game! </random>

You could probably use Celtic III or DCS as they have xLIB compatibility. You would probably just need to change a few things. However, If the game is massive and you got a 83+ I wouldn't recommend DCS for memory reasons.

Also it has better compatibility with xLIB stuff. The only problem I notice is when using the Horiz command, so text dissapears from Reuben Quest Ev Awakening start menu.

New screenshot!

Shows:
 - New intro
 - Life Force icon pulses when you lose LFP and pulses constantly when it drops to 10 or lower
 - Small Life Force Orbs which recover 5 LFP
 - Large Life Force Orbs which recover 10 LFP
 - Another demonstration of being able to walk on edges as opposed to auto-move-to-next-room like in the first game
 - "Give Up" scene

As always, note that the screenshot is slower than the game because my WabbitEmu sucks. Furthermore, the game will be faster than it is now once I optimize routines.

*progress bump*
Graphical map is finished. Map is a total of 49 rooms

Tile count (sprites and objects): 7 old, 51 new
Free space: 11 tiles

Note: some tiles are similar to tiles from the first game but aren't exact replicas. I count them as new (only exact replicas are old). This count does not include tile 0 (empty tile representing walkable land), the event tile (can't be old or new because it's essential), and the invisible tile (empty tile you can't walk on, used only if I need to enforce invisible barriers for some reason)

All that's left is actually coding the map, events, and dialogue. This is going to be very tedious because there are some pretty extensive cut-scenes. X_x;

Since it's pretty tedious, I'm probably going to alternate each day between coding the game and working on some bonus goodies.

For those not in the know, I'm planning on releasing Yumé and Yumé 2 simultaneously along with downloadable bonus goodies that include:
 1) a double-feature game guide that covers both games and goes in depth into the ideology of the Yumé series and reveals interesting information I've never posted about. It's spoileriffic! :D
 2) Monochromatic and special edition color versions of the Dream World maps from both games.
 3) Bonus artwork (no spoilers there ;) )
 4) Bonus wallpapers

Why am I including bonus goodies? Because I can!

Wow nice. Seems like there will be a lot of exploration to make too in this game. Can't wait to try them. Sept 16th 12 AM would be the release date for both, right?
Title: Re: Yumé 2: Rika's Story [Adventure/RPG, Series]

Depends on two things:
 1) When will Kerm okay releasing Yumé?
 2) Will I have the time to get all the events and maps coded and tested between now and then?
Optimally, yes, I could release both on September 16th.

And yes, there will be lots of exploration in Rika's Story. The Dream World is a LOT more open in the second game.

From what I remember, he was planning to release the contest entries on September 16th 12 AM, when Omni contest ends.

Just a suggestion, though: try to not go too far with lowercase letters. Remember lowercase letters are 2 byte tokens, when uppercase ones are 1 byte. This takes A LOT of memory when you have massive amounts of text.

Also, I think I forgot to cross-post this:

The Yumé series is currently 5 planned games. They are:
 Yumé
 Yumé 2: Rika's Story
 Yumé 3: Finality
 Yumé 4: Prélude de Rêve
Yumé 5: Nightmare Under the Nightmare

I also have ideas for a possible 6th and 7th game: Tentatively, they are:
Yumé no Shinsei (The Rebirth of Yumé)
Yumé no Shuukyoku (The Dénouement of Yumé)

1-3 and 5 are direct sequels, 4 is a prequel to 1, and 6-7 are tentatively time-skip sequels.
I'm planning on ramping up the graphics for the 3rd game+

You should have a conclusion game that tells the end of the story
If I only do 5 games, Nightmare Under the Nightmare will have the conclusion in it (even if it's open-ended).
If I do 6 games but not 7, the 6th will end up being Yumé no Shuukyoku which, as its name implies, will be the conclusion.
If I do all 7, again Yumé no Shuukyoku will be the conclusion game.

Excellent.  My biggest grip about Commander Keen (made by the creators of DOOM) is that they moved on from the project, ending the game series in a cliffhanger.

I really doubt the Yumé series will be much more than 5-7 games. I suppose I could always make an 8th game that serves as a prequel to the prequel but... that'd be pushing it a bit.

Yeah first I would focus on the first two games and planning the 3rd, then when then 3rd progresses enough, start planning 4th, then 5

And add some new stuff as the series goes on. It's good to not start too large unless you worked on RPG/adventure games a lot before. Notice how the first 6 games in Illusiat series were rather short or had few dungeons and most had no shop)

This game is not dead! I'll finish it sometime this summer and release it before Fall of 2011! It too will have bonus content!

For those wondering, the lack of me in the community and lack of work on the Yumé series is mainly due to college draining a lot out of me to the point where I wanted to spend my free time doing everything NOT considered work so I could de-stress. Furthermore, I have begun investing time into two long-term projects that I will post about at a future date. Both are games :P
