Title: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 10, 2010, 12:09:59 pm
Alrighty, I'm working on a new web project.
I'll be making what's known as a "Duel Academy". Basically, it's like an MMO guild/alliance but for TCGs.
We gather duelists, use the best of the best for wars with other Duel Academies, and train new members/players to become the best of the best.

Anyway, so far I'm in the planning stages while I work on getting the money ready for a host. (Most likely 1and1 since I'm familiar with it.)

What I have so far is the background/banner for the site and that's what I want your opinion on. (I'll probably be making minor edits to it anyway unless otherwise suggested.) Also, note that the big white space is just a placeholder for the actual content. Without further ado...

So... what do you think so far? Questions/ratings/comments all welcome.

wow that looks awesome so far, I can't wait to see the game in action or at least in-game screenies.

Baffled. Stupefied. This looks professional... Did you cheat? :P

Thank ya kindly, you two~

Though, I think I explained the purpose of the site wrong. (You're not the only one to get confused by what I meant.)

It's not actually a game. More of a forum/site that's dedicated to gathering the best Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering card players for competitive play while teaching new players how to be one of the best. It's kinda like High School for card games. We teach people while competing with other "schools" for nothing more than fun and glory. I plan on including all sorts of useful features to make it much more than just some forum as well.

Really, I'm using this kind of as a gateway to my next project I've planned which is actually a online strategy/RPG that's connected directly to a forum system. More information will be released once I actually start this project.

I have teams for both projects, but I'm doing this project before I tackle that big game project in say... a year or so.
I really need the practice coding and running a big site, plus the graphic/web design practice in general.
Also, advertising... definitely need to work on advertising. It's not an easy subject to cover.

Anyway, I hope this clears things up a bit.

(Still accepting all questions/ratings/comments/etc.)

oooh I see, sorry for that x.x

I hope if it works out well that you still have time to come here tho o.o

No problem.
I realize I didn't explain it very well. My fault entirely. ^^;

it's ok :)

Also, I'll definitely have to come back to Omnimaga.
But, I'm not sure if I can keep the Admin status here...
I don't do much actual admin work here anyway...

However, regardless of my position at Omnimaga, I'm definitely going to work on making time for it.
You guys were my start. You're like family now. I'm not just going to walk out on you. ^^

Post by: Galandros on January 10, 2010, 03:53:51 pm
That is a nice idea and I think there is audience for that. ;)
I never got too much in those games because of being addictive plus buying and trading cards involve money. But I do have a deck and know the basic rules and stuff. I had some good afternoons playing and were great. :D

One thing, I would like to do is a web browser combat cards game (by combat it means something like MTG) in PHP. But this is very on the bottom of my projects list. xD

Will you still be making games tho? (PC, Calc, ROM Hack)

If so I wouldn't mind if you still remained in the staff no matter what (providing you are still a bit active), but it is your choice

Well, you'll love my second project then, Galandros. =D
(More info to come one day.)

Geekboy, I'd definitely love to work on a project like that... but my god, that'd take forever. x.x
There's already a few programs that allow others to play online so we'll be using those and handle everything else at the site.

Thanks for the compliments though, everyone!

(DJ, I'll answer the PM in a second. I'd have replied earlier, but a friend of mine that I haven't seen in a year came over unexpectedly, talked for a bit, then left. x.x)

So this site is more like a gathering place then? A place to find people to play against, socalize and sharpen your skills using pre-existing tools to battle against other people online? I am a big fan of TCG's but I haven't played much recently. I was huge into Yu-gi-oh at one time and I used to play MTG for a while(but that was some time ago ^^).
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 10, 2010, 06:21:29 pm
That's EXACTLY what it is, Art of Camelot! ^^

Everyone's welcome, so if you want to get back into TCGs by playing for free online with others...
Then by all means, join~ (when I get it up and running) =D

BTW, I bought the webhost and domain today. Domain isn't up yet though.

Post by: TIfanx1999 on January 10, 2010, 06:24:14 pm
That sounds pretty sweet. I have played Yu-gi-oh onlike in the past, so maybe I'll get back into playing again. MTG too, it was alot of fun, ^^ though I've never played MTG online.

Didn't you alerady have a 1and1 webhost? Or did you shut down your other sites?

Post by: {AP} on January 10, 2010, 06:34:45 pm
Well, that was my mom's.
I'd use it... but I lost the password after the hard drive crash and I haven't talked to my mom (and can't get ahold of her) for like 2 months now.

So... I had to get my own. Which works out for the best really. I like having complete control over whether or not it's paid for and such. =)

oooh ok that sucks :S

Can you get your old files, though? Or where they lost too?

I would at least copy the images if I was you
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 10, 2010, 08:42:07 pm
I can't get to any of the files at the moment.
Best I could do is grab the pictures. (like you said)

But... I think I'm gonna head to bed first.
I'm seriously tired. x.x

Later~

Update:

I spent an hour this morning to get some work done.

Here's the progress:

Started this morning ^
^ Now

Of course, I'm not done... at all... but I have to head out to school.
Just thought I'd give a status update.

Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 11, 2010, 06:52:33 pm
Nice, btw as suggestion:

When you startup your forum, do not have way too many forum sections. I mean, don't do like United-TI or Cemetech. Each sections will look more empty and board look less active, not to mention some people may get confused. Add new sections as the board gets more active, while still making sure to not have way too many.

Another thing, do not just admin everyone. Some people will go like "First 3 100 posters gets mod privileges". Bad idea, because you never know who you fall on.

Can't wait to see more progress :)

Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game

Alrighty, finally got the base of the theme looking nice.

For now on, you can check: http://www.removedfromgame.com/

I currently have disabled registration, but here it is so far.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Note:
Yes, I need to make forum/post makers. Getting on that.
Yes, I need to add actual sections. I'm planning that out too.
But otherwise, any suggestions are welcome. I'm using the same forum system as omnimaga.org and I can change any detail. (assuming I can find it in the code)

OOoooh very great so far!. I wonder if it would be possible to have the plain black background area so both sides gradually fades into the other background/blend into it?

Hm... just changed the background up a bit.
That's the closest I can do to what Omni suggested.

Oh, and thanks for the compliments guys. =)

Edit: Actually... I do have another idea... I'm just not sure it'll work out.

Alright, I like this better. Thanks for the idea, DJ. =)

Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 11, 2010, 10:38:00 pm
Haha, yes. Indeed. Considering I started the project today. =D

(Okay, I cheated by making the background yesterday... but since I had to edit it a few times today anyway...)
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 12, 2010, 01:56:21 pm
nice looks better now ^^

I hope this is successful. And don't forget adding anti spambot mods, because altough SMF has mass-delete tools, at least you won't get as many spambots as you would normally get with only the default anti-spam :P
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 12, 2010, 10:20:42 pm
Alrighty... I planned on getting more work done today... but instead I watched 4 movies and a stand-up special.
So... um... yeah. Movie break.
I'll resume progress tomorrow. =P

Today: Watched some anime, started working out, then got to work on the site. (Check the site! (http://www.removedfromgame.com/))

Here's my progress/ideas so far.

Changed the sections quite a bit. Added the Classroom for each game, Exam Room, and War Room (with sub-forum for The Exiled). Renamed a couple sections. Also, about to finish with the descriptions for each section. (sorry about the laziness)

Added a few mods.

Pick one at registration. Your stats will be for whichever game you picked here. (This separation was decided to not bloat the post profile too much.) I'm undecided on whether to also make MTG players not able to see the YGO sections and visa-versa. (Probably won't.)

Avatars limited to 100x100, which would fill the box perfectly.
Thinking I'll get rid of the group name above the avatar too.

More to come tomorrow. Most likely. (I don't have any other plans yet...)

Wow very nice and promising. One suggestion, tho: I would make the "marked as read" forum marker a bit more blue-ish rather than grayscale, else for some reasons, it doesn't seems to fit too well. Other than that great job so far. I kind of wish I could design stuff that good.

Also good decision of not using SMF 2.x yet *points out to what happened to TIMGUL in June*

Oh and make the text in the login box at the bottom of the page a lil darker because it's a bit hard to read.

I'd suggest you add the ability for people to indicate that they play both games. I'd suggest having a "getting started" topic pinned in the help section (possibly have a decent size link at the top of the main page to it) That explains YVD, and whatever program magic players are using these days to play online and some basic info about how to set them up.

Thanks much! =D
As for the forum markers, I try that way out too.
Edit: Did it. Love it. Thanks for the suggestion. ^^

Also good decision of not using SMF 2.x yet *points out to what happened to TIMGUL in June*
Yeah, 1.1.x has more support/mods/ etc. too so I decided to stick with that and not risk anything.

Oh and make the text in the login box at the bottom of the page a lil darker because it's a bit hard to read.
Thanks for pointing that out. I just noticed that there's a good deal of text like that. >.< I'll work on an appropriate solution.
Edit: Fixed. It was a lot harder than you'd think. The code for the text color there was also connected to a LOT of other areas. So when I turned it black, any text on the black background wasn't seeable. So, I had to change the color back in the templates for each one of those areas individually. Let's just say... I hope I'm not changing skins anytime soon, because I just messed with a lot of the code. (including a lot of other fixes I had to make earlier in the skinning process)

Wow, really nice! I like the New/Old Post markers the best. ;D
Thank you~ I went through like 20 designs before I got that finally. ^^; Then I copied the style for the membergroup images and the favicon.

I'd suggest you add the ability for people to indicate that they play both games.
Hm, I'll think about how to manage that exactly. Probably would be for the best to do so.

I'd suggest having a "getting started" topic pinned in the help section (possibly have a decent size link at the top of the main page to it) That explains YVD, and whatever program magic players are using these days to play online and some basic info about how to set them up.
Already planned. That's what the "Getting Started" section is for. I'll sticky all the important information like that and members can use it as the introduction area at the same time. =P

Ouch, that sucks. Fortunately, on this Omni board I never had such problem because I opted for a lighter background, but on the old board, back in 2005 we had a dark blue background and it was hectic to choose any text color. Changing text color of the background would change it almost everywhere else. Invisionfree was worse at doing that, though. Zetaboards even more.

I will send you a PM now because I have a question

Alrighty, currently I'm writing up all the starting topics. (Rules, Help, and so on...)
This will... take a hell of a lot of time.

Next, I need to scout for staff.
Examiner
I need at least one for each game. (My co-admin and I are also qualified as examiners for both. So we'll have a total of 4 to start.)
They need to have up-to-date knowledge of each game, the ability to evaluate a players skill in several areas, and ability to give lessons to others. This includes one-on-one teaching and the writing of lessons in topics.

Moderators (2 spots available to start)
They will just manage the forums. You know, typical law enforcers of the forum. Uphold the rules and such. Open to anyone here that wants the position is welcome to sign-up. (You're not guaranteed the job though. I'll gather a list and pick who I believe are the most qualified. The rest will remain on the list until more mods are needed or replacements are needed. The list will be added to as my co-admin and I see fit.)

This will total to 8 staff. Two Admins, two Mods, and two Examiners.

Due to the harsh requirements, this may take a bit. There's also a few other forces that will slow down the official opening of the site regardless of how finished it is. These forces are completely out of my control so we'll just have to wait it out. However, I may still open it for registration early anyway. We'll see how things go.

I'll try to put a deck together this weekend when I'm off (for Yu-gi-oh) so I can start playing again. I'm know for playing alot of odd decks. Deck building is actually the funnest part of the game to me. =) I wouldn't mind helping out either, although I'm not sure what exactly.

It is for me too, although I don't want to spend much money on it...
I've only spent $50 in trading cards, so my deck (Magic) is terrible. ;D

I actually had almost $200 worth of Magic deck, but it was lost while moving... :'(
and after that, I never dared to buy the card again (once I start buying them, I'm afraid I'll be addicted again and spend more money)

ah well good news to us who are broke XD

YU-Gi-Oh virtual desktop (aka yvd) has a deck builder in it and you dont need to have real cards to play i just used my deck cause it was what i was used to :P

OH and how goes it so far {AP} ?
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 15, 2010, 10:18:03 pm
Geekboy mentioned the Yu-Gi-Oh! fix. Here's the magic one.

Magic Workstation (http://www.magicworkstation.com/). Free to use, but you can pay a one-time fee for the full version. I really never saw a need to upgrade, it works fine without it.

Note that both programs don't come with the pictures due to the huge size so you'll have to download them separately if you want them.

I'll have full tutorials posted on RFG later if you're having any issues with either program.

SPECIAL NOTE: Additional YGO solution: KCVDS (http://www.kaibacorporation.com/index.php)
Registration is only up for this weekend then it'll be back down for awhile so register now.
This is a much prettier, cooler YGO program. Just Youtube "KCVDS" if you want to see it.
I'll be focusing on using this program on RFG for YGO but I'll use YVD too, of course.

As for the progress on RFG, it's delayed for a little bit. I'll get back to writing tomorrow.
I've just been sore and had some stuff to deal with IRL today so I took the rest of today off.

*geekboy makes a note to install both as yvd with images is actualyl stikll really small (<50 megs) and kcvds looks epic

well a side note to put on the forum

yvd with pics ~50 megs all in all

and MTG WS is any where from ~60 megs to over 4 gigs depending on picture quality and such :)

Really? Howso? There are no images on my computer.
From what I understood, it has all that information on their server.

(That actually sounds like you're describing Magic Workstation. In which case, that's absolutely correct. =P)

I think my bro bought like over $1500 of cards back then, but then he stopped playing after getting addicted to a mmorpg. He was getting not too bad at playing Yu-Gi-Oh, usually won at least half of his games at tournaments and getting to semi finals or the like. My mom kept telling him to sell some unused and duplicate cards he had from booster packs but he would never do x.x

KCVDS huh? Must be newer. I'll have to check it out when I have some time.

I actually had almost $200 worth of Magic deck, but it was lost while moving... :'(
and after that, I never dared to buy the card again (once I start buying them, I'm afraid I'll be addicted again and spend more money)
You wouldn't believe how much money I sunk into Yu-gi-oh back when I was obsessed with it. It was ridiculous! =(

Alrighty, I'm sure some of you are wondering about the progress so far.

Well, for the moment, I'm studying my ass off. I figured if I'm going to teach others about Yu-Gi-Oh! I damn well had better be up-to-date with my information. I'm going one-by-one through every single card made and making notes of things. Combos, deck strategies, and all sorts of other bits of information. While doing so, I decided to make a deck or two to increase my skills at both deck building and dueling.

In addition, I'm looking at the more advanced rules of the game. I want to be able to answer most big questions on rulings without looking it up.

In between all this, I'm writing up topics for the site that will prove useful to the members and getting my co-admin to do the same for Magic: The Gathering. On the side, I'm still talent searching for Examiners.

So... I've been busy. ^^;

Nice. That makes me wish my bro was still into Yu Gi Oh. He could maybe have helped and contributed since he played for a long while

I'm up for being a moderator.  I still have most of my Magic cards and favorite decks (well over 7 years old though), and in middle school everyone used me as a rule book.
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game

Sounds good, simplethinker.

I'm actually not sure if the Magic portion of the site will remain there anymore.
Mostly due to the fact that I don't really think I can manage both games alone and I'm more into Yu-Gi-Oh! now.
That's originally what the co-admin was for... but I'm not sure if he'll be able to handle it with college.

It's not gone yet and can still be saved, but I'm not going to be the one that can save it.

When I played Yu Gi Oh with my bro for fun, I always liked it more than magic, same for my bro, because Magic always seemed too complicated to us. But when we did, it was when there were like 1000 cards of Yu Gi Oh at most. It was all about ATK and DEF and atk/def powerups, no special effects and the like

What sucked at tournaments my bro went too, especially the traditional mode, is that like 99% of all existing Yu-Gi-Oh cards were banned x.x

yeah i didnt participate in tourtements for that reason  i didnt like all the rules and regualtions :/

{AP}  is tehre gonna b alike a lawwless section for duel for ppl who just like dont care bout rules ect.(within reasin of course XD)
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 19, 2010, 02:22:44 pm
That's more of a decision between the players. If the people playing don't care then it's okay.
There's no need to make a section to separate people who play by the rules and people who don't.

But just so you know, 95% of Yu-Gi-Oh! players generally only like playing Advanced format. About 4% play Traditional. The last percent just play whatever they want.

However, I still will probably add a option in your profile to show which style you play at the very least.
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 19, 2010, 02:26:14 pm
yeah at tournaments, which were bi-weekly until 2007, one week it was traditional and two week later advanced. Advanced only had a few banned cards and was better. Near the end almost no one would come to traditional tournaments anymore so they ditched them.

Custom forum profile fields would be cool. I dunno if there are any for SMF 1.x that looks decent, though (doesn't appear in a funky area of your profile)

ok that means i need to rework my deck abit (stupid snatch steal :/) as it fits in teh traditional rules i think maby not  but it doesnt come close to the advanced rules :/
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 19, 2010, 02:47:45 pm
Traditional is nothing but the Advanced rules, except that every card on the "Forbidden" list is moved to the "Limited" list. (which means, if you couldn't use the card before, now you can only use 1 instead)

If you got YVD recently, then the current list is on the right side of the deck making screen. You can change between Advanced and Traditional. KCVDS defaults to Advanced rules and I'm not sure how to change it. (I haven't looked though.)

On a side note Yu Gi Oh can get pretty confusing in terms of copyright dates :/

Aside from most recent rule books and the World Championship GBA/DS games, everything Yu-Gi-Oh related, even newer games and cards, is copyrighted (c) 1996 x.x

Alrighty, did a bit of an update.
Fixed a graphical glitch, adjusted some settings appropriately, threw in a portal, and customized the portal's code a bit because I didn't like how it displayed some stuff. =)
I love knowing PHP~

I may actually get some writing done tonight.
I'm kinda switching back and forth between this and another project.
Also, still hunting for good Examiners (at LEAST one) and planning some stuff out.
Since I graduated, I do have quite a bit more free time... I'm just having a bit of trouble balancing the free time properly.

Cool ^^

I assume this is SimplePortal, right?

Had you used EzPortal I would have asked you if you somehow knew how to create new EzBlocks :P (for example, one that would show the board posting/topic/members stats on front page, since EzPortal didn't add such block x.x)

I think you just have to create a PHP EzBlock and throw some code in there

Btw you should probably put your site in your signature or URL field ^^

Yeah, it's SimplePortal so I can't help you there. ^^;

Also, good thought... I do need to make a forum sig/userbar for advertising.
(Oh, and put it in that URL field. Forgot about that.)

EDIT: Got it done. Well, at least a temporary fix.

Omnimaga used to use SimplePortal, but it was way too limited a year ago. It had like 20% of the features it has now x.x. This is why I switched.

and awesome pics and stuff

Eventually I may put once again an affiliate section on front page of Omnimaga, like we had on the old forums. However, I'm no longer affiliating with any other TI calculator site.

I can get some great sites resources for MTG decks from a friend.

I will ask when he brings the computer to school. They are bookmarked in Firefox, so it is easy to pass them to me.
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 25, 2010, 02:28:39 pm
I'm still not sure that I'll keep the MTG portion of the site. (I have it hidden now.)

I know I can't keep track of both games alone and the co-admin that was supposed to work with it seems far too busy with college. (actually haven't heard from him for a week) So, I'm thinking of just getting rid of it unless I find an admin who can take care of it all. No coding will be required, but they need to be up-to-date on everything about MTG, a pretty skilled player, able to organize events, good at general moderation, able to advertise, etc. So it's still not an easy job.

I have an idea of someone who may get into it... I'll call him later today, but if anyone else thinks they can meet all this criteria then feel free to apply for the spot.

I assume your other admin is Freak Contagion? Or is it a test account?
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: {AP} on January 25, 2010, 02:53:11 pm
Yeah, that's the co-admin.
Friend of mine in college who got me into MTG in the first place.
The problem is the "in college" part. =(

I'm gonna start recording matches and, eventually, tutorials.
First match ended up lasting over 30 minutes. Sped it up to just about 10 and working on uploading it then annotating it.

Give me anothers 30 minutes. =P

Double post, because I can! =D

Recorded that video. Here's a weird game. Lasted over 30 mins (don't worry, I sped it up to last only 10), had a horrible hand, and I came back with only 200 LP left!

(Left as a link so you can see it the big screen version and/or HD.)

I'll probably actually upload tutorials later.
Also, I'll make an ad for RemovedFromGame.com with this account. Eventually.

There's not much to read at the site yet. =P
(The Rules are just the general forum rules stuff. Nothing important. You know how forums work. =P)

I still need to get some actual writing done. I'm in no rush for now though.
Seto Kaiba needs to open registration for KCVDS before I bother opening RFG.

If you build it they will come... Er um I mean maybe you'll be able to find someone after the site opens up. I'd say have it open but perhaps a bit more free form than the yu-gi-oh section for now. If there is interest and a fair amount of players, maybe you can find someone suitable.

Well, for sure, I think your site will need some advertising. The key for advertising: do not do it on sites you don't participate much into. Joining just to advertising is hated even more than spambots. If you're part of some communities you might get some members from there. IN sites you don't participate much into you can always put the link with description in your signature. Youtube advertising also works and Facebook.

Advertising has always been my weak point.
Title: Re: [Web] Removed From Game
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 26, 2010, 08:30:56 pm
Same here, the first time I advertised Omnimaga everywhere and it still got like 1000 hits a month at most on front page. I didn't have a forum back then, though (we used the EPS forums)

Before EPS, Omni had a board, though, which got advertised, and I got 60 posts in half a year. It didn't have anything new to offer, though, since I alerayd posted my calc projects elsewhere anyway.
http://web.archive.org/web/20040627225157/http://www.yaronet.com/forum.php?s=462 (all the posts are still on yAronet today, just the board index is gone)

The Invisionfree Omnimaga worked because it offered stuff not avaliable anywhere else in the TI community: project-oriented discussion (mostly) and friendly community. It is still the case today, altough for a while in 2007 it wasn't anymore x.x
