Title: 10 years of juju2143.ca
Post by: Juju on February 24, 2014, 12:15:33 am
Well, it seems my website (http://juju2143.ca) turned 10 today. I already wrote about its history here (http://ourl.ca/16395) (I'd add the fact julosoft.net redesigned into a corporate website with my video games portfolio while juju2143.ca became more of a front page where you can find my contact info and many of the projects I've done).

The first page (http://pages.videotron.com/zabimage/juju2143/) was created in Feburary 2004, then it went through many URLs and redesigns... Suprisingly, version 1 of the site is still online after 10 years. Throughout the years, I offered many services, random PHP scripts and files were hosted there as well as forums, IRC channels and networks, projects and other websites. My mom's website also still exists (v1 of my site was a subdirectory of her account, while today it's on my account and it's currently getting redesigned on zabimage.com :P)

So yeah, happy birthday, website. :D

Wow it's hard to realize it has been that long already. Btw I assume this is just the site that turned 10, right, not the current URL? (I thought Juju2143.ca domain name was registered in 2011-12)

At least your site looked much better in 2004 than mine in 2001 :P (I had an animated bg that made it hard to read text and didn't even use index.html for the main page name)

Yeah, The site turned 10, but it went through many URLs. Its current URL was registered in 2011 (it also forked into 2 URLs, one personal (http://juju2143.ca) and the other more corporate (http://julosoft.net)).

And surprisingly, all the external URLs on my site on pages.videotron.com still works after 10 years (including zabimage.com, which was registered by my mom back in 2003-04 as a redirect to the parent directory and re-registered by myself in 2013 for a redesign).

Also, frames. I think it's pretty much the only time I used them.

How many URLs so far? Back when I only used free hosting and no domain name, I had to move everytime because of closing hosting providers and needing more resources. The constant URL changes made it hard to get the site known. Of course, I had omnimaga.tk in 2004, but it caused problems logging in to forums due to the frame redirect. From what I remember, Omni hosting went like this:

Jan 2004: CA-Fr Geocities
Mar 2004: Lycos + yAronet
Apr 2004: Freewebpage + yAronet
May 2004: United-TI + yAronet (omnimaga.tk acquired. Stopped being used in late 04 due to frame redirect preventing forum logins)
Sep 2004: United-TI
Nov 2004: CalcWebzine
Dec 2004: -Site closed-
Feb 2005: Earthforge
May 2005: Earthforge + Invisionfree
Oct 2005: United-TI + Inivisionfree (omnimaga.dyndns.org acquired in Oct 2005 and omnimaga.org in Oct 2006)
Jan 2008: United-TI + Zetaboards
Mar 2008: -Site closed-
Aug 2008: 1and1
Oct 2010: Aspiration Hosting
Apr 2011: Aspiration Hosting + Calcgames
Oct 2011: Calcgames
Apr 2012: Amazon
May 2012: Amazon + bwns.be
Sep 2012: Amazon (OmnomIRC went offline for a month)
Oct 2012: Amazon + Withg
Sep 2013: Ubiquity

Note: In Oct 2007, Omnidancerecords.com was also acquired for some sort of music label-ish project, along with www.mtv-music-generator.com, but when Omni closed in March 2008, Omnimaga.org was going to be used instead and Omnidancerecords.com domain name was discarded. Omnimaga was going to become entirely music-related, but this never came to fruition since I was convinced by many people to re-open the calc site.

omni exists since 2001, it is online since 2004
EDIT: founded on 1st sep 2001, it is on the about page http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=17

Yeah Omni started a bit over 12 years ago on Sept 1st 2001. However, it didn't make it online until March 3rd 2004 (unless we count the site under construction page on Geocities, which led to MaxCoderz's ROL3 board), and even then, until April 2004 it was only a forum.

EDIT: I think there's a typo on the about page, because the last banner shown there says it was used since Feb 2008, when in fact it's 2010. (not that it's being used anymore as default banner anyway)

Overall it is pretty old iirc and needs some re-doing.

Yeah true. Of course that's assuming the admins plan to even keep that page after the upgrade anymore, though.

That's funny, we started nearly at the same time. But in my case, nobody was aware it existed (probably apart from a few friends at school) until 2009 when I started using IRC and forums. Note that websites I made got nominations for best website in 2007 and 2008 (in the Junior Achievement program as I attempted to make pre-order forms).

Anyway, I think my website changed hostings quite a few times too:

- Vidéotron (2004, v1)
- Multimania (2005-06?, v2, v3)
- A Pentium II at my home (with DynDNS) (when I got fed up of all the ads on Multimania, switched to Linux in 2008)
- A slightly newer Pentium IV? (2009?)
- A VPS (2010)
- Another VPS (shortly after, v3-4-5-6)
- Sorunome's VPS (2013-ish, v6-7)

Yeah in my case, my Lycos website from 2001 was never really known other than the school teacher and a few classmates, because I didn't know that the main page had to be called index.htm or something like that, so 2.5 years after putting it online, it only got 12 hits. As for Omnimaga, when it was not a website yet, some people at school knew it existed since I used it in school VB projects and eventually calculator games, but that's pretty much it. The website first got known via MaxCoderz's old board.

As for the years where Omni used dual hosting, it was mainly because free forum hosting was being used, while an external host was used to host images and files. In recent years, it was of course when OmnomIRC was hosted on a separate server. Lycos wasn't kept because it was so slow and Freewebpage had annoying ads. Geocities Canadian French version was fast and almost ad-free, unlike the US version, but each file had to be under 900 KB and hotlinking wasn't allowed. They also had no FTP upload IIRC, which made it tedious to upload hundreds of files.

Me neither... xD So yeah I was around 12 when I first made a website using this book I got, HTML for Dummies. And now I'm 22 and I'm getting rather good xD
