Title: Browser War
Post by: bfr on June 28, 2006, 05:47:00 am
Which browser do you all think is overall the best?  Also, what do you all feel about each browser's support for CSS, HTML, etc.?  If you could make your website work on only one browser, which standard would you live up to?  W3C's?  Microsofts?  Do you think ActiveX is a good or bad thing?  Do you ever think you'll lay your hands on something that works on only one browser, such as VBscript?

(this topic might trigger a troll)

I like firefox for windows, Safari for mac. I might try opera tho now that version 9 is out (seems to render page much better than the older versions now)

I got problems with gamil in opera tho I dunno if 9.0 fix that

Firefox hands down.  IE, well, we all know what's wrong with that.  Netscape is unstable and slow (from my expirence), plus the fact that it doesn't have any kind of extensions.  I had the same problem with Opera as xlibman, but it would probably rank as #2 on my list.  Safari is just, well, I don't like it.  Don't really know why, I just don't.

I've only tried firefox and IE, so i dont really think i should vote.  of the two, of course firefox wins hands down.  i might try opera if it is significantly better though.

LOL firefox XDsmiley.gif We are all nerds. Normal people all use IE (ack), Netscape (double ack), MSN (*barf*), or AOL (BACK VILE CREATURE OF THE NETHERWORLD! I cast thine soul into the BOWELS of OBLIVION!!!).

Opera is pretty good, but the pw manager suxx0rz (it lies!) so firefox wins. :] I kinda want Opera DS... probably will cost $40 though. <_<dry.gif

FF is good..the only problem I've noticed with it (in css) is that it attaches a top margin to everythingn so that you have to cancel out the margin so that it doesn't affect it.  Other than that, FF is a ton better.

Many people around where I live use AOL.

I also remember that there was somebody on IRC who liked Opera the most I think.  Hmmm....

Most people who use AOL are misinformed.  They beleive that AOL is the internet.  It is not them but stupid people who recomend it to them and the fact that AOL advertises ALOT more then Firefox, Opera or any other good browser.  Also, those who use AOL most likely have no idea what the internet actually is.  I conclude by saying while the people who created AOL are bloodsucking, demonic, evil, fire breathing, demon winged, horned vampires of money and soul those who use it are the victoms.

EDIT:  Where is AOL on that poll anyway?

I added the AOL and MS options.  :)smile.gif

Also, when I click "Show Results" I get redirected to the main page.

But all of you HTML/Javascript/CSS coders, you may dislike Internet Explorer, but Internet Explorer is very popular and if you make your code look good only on W3C-compliant browsers, many people will be viewing your page wrongly.

allynfolksjr does. Seems like we have lot of firefox lovers here o.oblink.gif this poll would have much different results on MC forums. There is at least 5 or 6 opera lovers out there and since there is linux users some might be useing browsers that aren't even in this list

Any point to prove firefox sucks and that avant is better? Personally I used Avant before, but I immediately switched to firefox when I got my new compy. yes it had tabbed browsing and cool stuff but it kept freezing and it was buggy as hell, sometimes scrollbars wouldnt appear, and when opening a new tab it would open Lycos email client in a popup. When I tried to open the drop down of the address bar to see all last visited links it took one minute to open and it took like 100 MB of ram to do it :/

Post by: leofox on July 01, 2006, 10:23:00 am
I downloaded the new IE, that looks pretty slick too. And CSS isn't crappy anymore.

The biggest problem with Avant is that it is old IE. I used avant before Firefox, imo avant was just IE trying to be Firefox (kinda like IE7 but crappier)
Title: Browser War
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 01, 2006, 10:31:00 am
imo i think Avant was more trying to be opera like, because unlike firefox opera only allowed one window.

Where can you download IE7 tho? o.oblink.gif

Correction: Nerds don't use firefix - as it's just a tabbed open sores version of Internet Explorer. Nerds use Opera, because it's functional and doesn't get in the way of more important things, like browsing the internet. I'd rather download a smaller exe and install it once to get all of the features that Firefox requires countless extensions and a larger base package for.

Post by: Spellshaper on July 01, 2006, 03:08:00 pm
Well, it's not our fault you use an outdated comp that can't afford to waste 30mb of RAM and 100mb of disk space O_o

^^'

1. FF never got in my way browsing the net
2. no need for smaller exes with a combined HD space of 430GB
3. no need for programs that sleek you can see the ribs with 1GB or RAM.

Any goodly configured average comp can do FF while gaming and whatever.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

That post is so misinformed... I'm not even going to try to respond to that.

While we're on that subject, I have a combined disk space of... past 750GB and at least two computers with 1GB of ram. So I don't really think performance is an issue here. :)smile.gif

Hey, I'm just trying to summon up some arguments pro firefox ^^
Maybe I did not emphasize the sarcasm/irony enough... :knight:knight3.gif

It's probably just my subjective opinion, but of all browsers I tried, I likef ff teh best. I find it easy to use, there are many extensions, and I can live with its inefficiency... I found some memory leaks :ninja:ninja.gif
To each its own! :lol:laugh.gif

Actually, it's an open source version of Netscape Navigator. ;)wink.gif Just thought I'd point that out. A hell of a lot more secure and less buggy I might add. NN has twice the holes of IE. :Ptongue.gif

Also I do not believe that tabbed browsing is a very special feature of any browser. :Ptongue.gif Granted, FF was one of the first with it, still, no browser should NOT have that feature, at least nowadays. It's just that the ones that don't have it are t3h suxx0rz and olde tymey.

Personally I would never use anything other than FF or Opera. Opera seems perfectly fine to me except for the evil pw manager. I must say though, FF has it's downsides too, 50MB RAM to run an internet browser seems kinda a lot. Not that it makes a difference for me, but it's the principle of the matter. Also, there's the occasional site that isn't compatible and you have to open IE for. :angry:angry.gif Hate that.

New IE looks okay, but I don't know if it's any less holey than old IE and I'm too lazy to do any research on it. :Ptongue.gif

LOL @ avant! I didn't know anyone still used that. XDsmiley.gif

Since I've ran into exactly zero IE specific sites that don't run in Opera, I fail to see the use in such a "feature."

@ xlibman: ADVENT froze for you? Wow thats what firefox did to me :)smile.gif I like advent mostly because of its lovely programable proxy list, making it ohh so easy to hack my stupid ISPs "safe blocks". Lame. One time my ISP blocked ticalc.org because of "criminal conduct". PATHETIC!!!

allynfolksjr - No, infact I am probably one of the most Mircrosoft-supporting people here, IE is just not there forte, shall we say.  IMHO, VStudios is an excellent piece of software, along with Office, and XP.

A few things must be said here, but I do not feel like gathering up all the information to back me up here. IE has been slow and unsafe for a while, but with the changes made/being made it will prove to be a powerful browser. I have always went with voting for Firefox, for I enjoy using it and is quite comfortable. But the one who I believe to be the greatest here is Opera. Opera has made several innovations that other browsers adapted later on, one being tabbed browsing as stated above. But beyond that it has many useful things such as widgets, which can be added in Firefox but those are extensions (which are close in resemblance).

Over all, it looks like IE will be ahead of all the other browsers in the future as Microsoft is a bigger company and it comes standard with all PC based systems. Firefox and Opera are wonderful browsers, but it lacks the force behind it (ie. the money). Most people do not know that there are better browsers than IE or if any had exists, as those people do not seek a better browser. Now Firefox looks like it is bigger now as it has been free since the beginning, as opposed to Opera, but now that Opera has become free it looks like it will be used by many more than before.

The last thing I think needs to be mentioned, for those who have not heard, is that Firefox has been purchased by Google. And for those who do not know, Google has become a big competitor to that of Microsoft. So now that Firefox has been placed in the hands of a powerful and well known company, it will be spread more appropriately (as far as I would think).

All in all, the choice comes to the users preference. I do not care what anyone uses, nor do I care what one says of any. Use what you want and that will be good enough to me, but I would like for those to as least use Firefox or Opera for safety reasons. At least until the newer version of IE come out officially.

Firefox all the way because no matter how much security software I've ever installed when I use Windows (once I had about 30 anti-malware programs all going at once and that %%%% STILL DIDN'T WORK!!!), bad things always find a way to get on my computer when using IE.

pyro_xp2k: your signature is right about IE, but Opera 9 is far more powerful, secure, and all around better at rendering than Firefox, plus it has  widgets. think a cross between the OS X dashboard and Firefox plugins. it also has  built in email and bittorrent clients

in order of my personal favorites:

Opera 9
Safari RSS
Opera 8
Konqueror
iCab
Firefox
Safari

iirc, firefox had 15ish critical security issues, and opera 8 had 1.

Even God agrees that Firefox is the better browser ;)wink.gif
