Title: ClrHome
Post by: Deep Toaster on January 20, 2011, 10:43:12 am
Seeing people making topics about their websites, I thought I'd post about mine (and yunhua98's) too. It's ClrHome Productions (http://clrhome.org/) (http://clrhome.org/). So far it has a home page, a blog, and a projects page.

Eventually I'm going to add a BASIC and two Axe tutorials—one for BASIC coders, one for people used to ASM (both of which I'm working on) and a HTML'd version of my guide to crash recovery (http://ourl.ca/8664/161736), all under the Tutorials tab. And a guestbook too, as soon as I learn PHP.

So, what do you think of it? It's a combo of jQuery and CSS (all my code, except for the pure CSS navbar that I took from another site ;D). I tried to hack the blog into looking like the main site, but there are still some missing bits.

And finally, if you're ever bored, read some calculator news (http://blog.clrhome.org/search/label/fake%20news) (:P) here (http://blog.clrhome.org/search/label/fake%20news) and comment :)

What's with .co.cc, why is it so special? :O
Anyway, I got across it due some random google search lately, and I browsed it quite deep.
I like the design, its simple, not hard to understand and not... well annoying in any way.
Some people use very annoying color combinations

Hmm...  the about bar is a bit off...

in IE7, on school comps, that is lol

@DT You updated the image in your sig but the second link still links to the TIphone one, not the Calc-burning one :P

.co.cc is probably cheaper than .com. The more obscure the end, the less expensive. For instance, a .info might only cost 50 cents a year, where a .com would cost $8 to $10

I use www.co.cc (http://co.cc/) which gives me the domain name for free :D

And thanks for telling me about the sig.

I like it, and co.cc can be nice to have short sub-domains without having to pay or get referral links and that crap. Also some funny fake news you got there Deep. :P

My 8th grade English teacher had a .info page, but it appears to have gone down. :( He was tough, but I liked him.

I'm sure more people would join if you didn't have to sign up then wait for emails then search for a hidden sign in and then send the value "$F2" to port $04 to activate the account.

Yeah, since I moved from Webs to an actual host, the sign in/sign up stuff's broken. If you want to join, just fill out the form and email me.

I have one more thing to say about ClrHome. The transition from website (host) to blogspot.com is almost unoticeable, that's what I admire the most, fantastic job!

Thanks :D Took me hours of hacking the blog. It's really hard to match two site themes if their layouts are totally different. CSS nightmare.

Beautiful and well organized site. I plan on joining as a part time dev (I'm pretty busy :P), but not just in calcs - I might be able to help out in web dev too! ;) (I do PHP/MySQL, and have designed a "Dropbox" for a school class for them to use. It's ugly but awesome! :D)

Yay, need more web devs :D Especially for PHP/MySQL. Last time I used it was with ASP a year ago, which I've completely forgotten ;D

Thanks, that's why I love grays (just look at my sig :P not a hint of color except in the ticalc logo). They match nicely, and remind me of grayscale ;D

I did? I don't remember...

Maybe I invited you to follow the blog, but in that case it was automatic. Just saw your form submit, though :)

EDIT: Wow, jQuery is amazing. I just cut the size of my projects page (http://clrhome.org/projects/) by half O.O

EDIT2: Screenshot tooltips! :D

EDIT3: Whoops, double-post, edited into this one.

Double post, but huge updates: I got signing up/in working (FINALLY) and a guestbook too (http://clrhome.co.cc/guestbook/ (http://clrhome.co.cc/guestbook/), thanks to Google (best corporation in the world )). And some smaller stuff too.

So start filling up the guestbook! It looks really weird when it's empty ;D

Big updates: I completely finished HTML'ifying my guide on crashing (http://ourl.ca/8664/161736) to http://clrhome.co.cc/tutorials/crash/ (http://clrhome.org/tutorials/crash/).

I also started my main Axe tutorial (http://clrhome.org/tutorials/axe/). I'm experimenting quite a bit with the colors (in other words, it's not totally white and gray :P). Does anyone think the colors are annoying in any way? Need some feedback on that.

Anyone who wants to help, PM me.

And if anyone knows what font Quigibo used for the Axe Parser logo, please tell me. It looks awesome, and I want to download it :D

Nice Deep Thought. Are you planning to release some tutorials here or ticalc too in the future, though? It might be good to try to not split the TI community info too much, especially on free hosting providers (since during hiatuses they sometimes delete inactive sites). Nice work, though.
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: Deep Toaster on January 30, 2011, 11:22:20 am
Yep, as I said in the crash recovery topic, I'll always post tutorials on forums if they're not too long :) So just not this one. I'm planning at least 20 pages for this.

And about deleting sites, that would suck x.x I have my site backed up on my thumb drive, though. Probably not a good idea still since I just lost my other one :P

Yeah I know. It happened a few days ago. Everything was gone including Deep Thought's/Yunhua98 signatures.

That was actually a stupid mistake on my part. I moved the images to a different directory but forgot to change them on the forums x.x

And good point, where is yunhua98? He's been so active usually.

Title: Re: ClrHome

Oh ok. Was it due to the previous host going down?

Nah, they just had a nasty habit of adding random PHP junk (alberthrocks knows all about it), so I tried switching to Free Hostia. Then that didn't work because FH doesn't like .co.cc domains, so I switched back (that's why it was down for so long).

Oh, and nobody can see this, but I'm adding my own admin control panel bit by bit. It's awesome. Project manager, blast emails, and drag-and-dropping members (all written by me :D). I wish I could show it to people :P

Profile editing? Sweet.

And yep, it works now. Well, not really, but if you go to http://clrhome.org/contact/ and double-click your display name or email, you can edit it :)

Thought I'd update the links.

Blog (http://clrhome.blogspot.com/): A place for me to post all my "news" (http://clrhome.blogspot.com/search/label/fake%20news). As you can tell I've twisted Blogger until the theme matched that of the main site (http://clrhome.org/).

Projects (http://clrhome.org/projects/): A project showcase, complete with admin controls (which you can't see, of course). It's getting a little long, so I guess I'll have to split it someday.

Bug report system (http://clrhome.org/projects/bugs/): Pretty much my own version of Bugzilla. All posts/comments are spam right now because no one's posted any bugs yet :P

Tutorials (http://clrhome.org/tutorials/): Showcase with HTML'd versions of my tutorials (and ACag's). One (http://clrhome.org/tutorials/crash/) is complete, four are being worked on, and three don't exist.

Guestbook (http://clrhome.org/guestbook/): This is gonna change sometime soon. Right now I'm still using Google FriendConnect for this, but I'd rather make my own version, like I did with the bug tracking system. For some reason I prefer using things I made myself 8)

Membership panel (http://clrhome.org/membership/): Sign up (http://clrhome.org/membership/#login), sign in (http://clrhome.org/membership/#login), user panel (http://clrhome.org/membership/?action=sabotage), help out (http://clrhome.org/membership/help/), join the team (http://clrhome.org/membership/join), admin panel (http://clrhome.org/membership/?action=sabotage), whatever.

Any comments/suggestions/bugs/rants? I'm really picky about bugs (OCD-ish), so if you find anything that's the slightest bit out of place, please tell me.

EDIT: Hey, I used 8) for the first time in a post! :D

EDIT2: Oh yeah, and I got rid of the screenshots on the main page because it loaded terribly slow in Safari.

And sign up when you have the time :)

It seems nice so far. Nice job. Just one suggestion, try to not add a forum, though, as there are already many established TI sites that got one like here, UTI, Cemetech, TI-Freakware (even if they restarted theirs from scratch), Revsoft, etc.
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: Deep Toaster on March 30, 2011, 11:33:28 am
Yeah, I decided at the beginning that I\'d never add a full forum. No sense competing with all the existing calc forums, and it would only split the community more.

EDIT: Apparently I keep crashing my server... Guess I should stop experimenting with it XD

Due to recent complaints that the site was too plain in its color scheme (until now it had been entirely in black, white, and various shades of gray), I decided to create a more colorful scheme for the ClrHome Productions site (http://clrhome.org/). It's not live on the blog yet, due to complications with Blogger, but I'm working on it.

(http://clrhome.org/images/4-1-2011.png) (http://clrhome.org/images/4-1-2011.png)

So, what do you think of it? There are some reports that it is slightly too colorful, which may be a problem.

Quote
As part of a chain of minor executive reforms in response to the events in the Middle East, an executive order issued today stated that daily conversations in the White House, Pentagon, and other executive offices will soon be conducted in French.

President Obama made the declaration this morning in a televised speech to Congress. "We owe them this much," he said. "The French people have long been our friends and allies in times of peace, and in wartime, our entire military is always free for their own use. It only makes sense that we begin the transition to their language, to help them better coordinate and control our men and women in uniform."

The speech itself did not contain any French, leading some to question whether the President knows any French at all. "Does he actually mean it?" asked Bob E. of Indiana. "I don't think he plans to do it at all. I think he's just trying to cover up for his bigger mistakes by pretending the military is more efficient than it actually is." White House representatives have not publicly commented on his experience in the language.

This decision does not affect Congress in any way because the legislature has no powers in dealing with war.

Yeah, I've completely given up on 7 and below yet again. It's functional in 8, so I don't really care anymore. I'll probably just greet IE users with a suggestion to get (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) a (http://www.google.com/chrome/) better (http://www.apple.com/safari/) browser (http://www.opera.com/) or something.

As for the host, I gotta choose between features and functionality, and I chose features :-\

Free web hosting: http://www.000webhost.com/

They say no ads, cpanel (I have cpanel with avahost--love it).

Looks like it might work for you. And $4.84/mo for premium is pretty cheap too.

Title: Re: ClrHome

It's a bit less stable than 000webhost since it's just a VPS, not a server network serving thousands of customers, but I've got CloudFlare (https://www.cloudflare.com/) and it's awesome. Saves bandwidth, speeds downloading, protects against downtimes and everything.[/ad]
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 31, 2011, 03:06:29 pm
Hmm interesting, is CloudFlare really reliable?
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: Deep Toaster on August 31, 2011, 03:34:01 pm
As far as I can tell, yep. It sends cached pages (WebArchive-style) when Juju's server has downtimes.
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 31, 2011, 03:55:06 pm
Ah that's good. But do they host the cached pages or something? I'm curious since normally when a server is down, it wouldn't even be able to send you cached pages. X.x

I am also worried that it actually keeps copies of your private data and stuff.
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: Deep Toaster on August 31, 2011, 04:23:17 pm
Oh yeah, it does. Whenever a browser tries to fetch something, CloudFlare downloads it from the server, stores a copy on their server, and sends it to the user. It doesn't actually get into the server scripts (all it sees is what any browser can see), so I'm guessing it's safe.

Did yet another complete redesign, and this time I think I finally got it right.

With the big front page icons, you should anti-alias the edges as they currently look a bit pixelated. But otherwise it looks good, and especially very clean and well laid out.

I took out the antialiasing so each image would use only a two-bit palette :/ What browser are you using? It's not bad in Chrome, when the images are scaled down a bit and get antialiased by the browser.
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: Darl181 on November 11, 2011, 12:49:52 am
Lol I thought that was on purpose, all in all it's not a terrible effect until you think about it :P
Maybe you could do that, just have it resize one or two pixels then bam :D
Title: Re: ClrHome
Post by: JL235 on November 11, 2011, 01:38:57 am
I'm using Firefox, and it looks the same in Chrome for me. To me, the edges are clearly jagged.

I only think it's a minor issue, and the icons still look nice like this. I just think changing it would add a tiny bit more polish.

Then your browser resolution is so big that it's not getting scaled down at all XD
I only think it's a minor issue, and the icons still look nice like this. I just think changing it would add a tiny bit more polish.
Yeah, I'll probably end up doing that. Turns out if I don't constrain it to a two-bit palette, there would be a total increase in file size of one kilobyte. Not much lol
Your project page is like a war.
I know.

Guess what—redesigned again. Minor stuff.

But here's the big news: alberthrocks was awesome enough to pay for a real domain name and give it to us  We're now at http://clrhome.org/ (http://clrhome.org/)!

Hopefully this'll be the last time we change addresses, since we've moved (so far) from clrhome.blogspot.com to clrhome.webs.com to clrhome.co.cc to clrhome.tk to clrhome.org :P

And we picked up another site in the process. flyingfisch's "TakeFlight Productions," which posts reviews and code for Casio calculators, is now hosted on http://casio.clrhome.org/ (http://casio.clrhome.org/).

Some other updates that may or may not interest you: OpenID login (http://clrhome.org/members/), twitter/facebook/g+ icons, and a Mibbit (IRC) chat widget that stays alive even if you switch pages :D

Aww, you ruined the surprise! D: (j/k)

But yeah, I got the lovely shiny clrhome.org domain for Deep Thought. Why? *.tk is blocked at my school. (Luckily they don't block .us.to :P) I really like to visit ClrHome often, especially at school, but they block it for no good reason! So, I thought about getting a domain name for ClrHome to 1) "bypass" the school filter and 2) it's reached critical mass that it needs a pretty .org domain name and 3) why not? :D

I don't expect anything back (it is a GIFT, after all!), and all the domain rights have been transferred to him (NameCheap rocks!), so enjoy the new domain name! :D (If Deep Thought is unable to renew for the 2nd year, I'd be happy to provide another Christmas present again. ;))

@epic7, Juju: heh, my username was just random nick picking, not actually me rocking/self-boasting as you may assume. :P But thanks! :D

The blog update can be found here (http://blog.clrhome.org/2011/12/time-to-update-your-bookmarks-again.html).

Oops Necropost.

@alberthrocks Yeah my school blocks .co.cc and .tk too.
I have visited the website and looked at the Axe Tutorials. There are some nice new ones such as making a shoot-em-up. In the Ultimate Guide I can see a start on Lesson 3, still there. But what I like most is the Axe Parser header that enlarges and shrinks as you go up and down the page! really cool and elegant!

Your main page has improved again Deep Thought, with great looking links to pages neatly organized into sections. Keep up the good work!

TIL:
  • ClrHome is actually pretty massive for a website/project coded from scratch (nearly 50 MB).
  • diff is a wonderful tool for resolving six months' worth of live site updates.
  • I miss calculator programming, a lot. Hoping to be active again by the end of the month :D
Do you think school will allow you to be regularly active again after this month or will it be more like 1 month of activity during summer and holidays?

As for the site I hope your new host is more stable than 000webhost. :P

Just checked, it's 10 MB of PHP/JS source code. The other 40 MB are images and other files.

By the way, if you want to try it here's a nice command to find the total file size of a certain type:
Code: [Select]
find . -name '*.asm' | xargs du -ch
As for the site I hope your new host is more stable than 000webhost. :P
I'm paying for it, so it better be. (It's GoDaddy Deluxe.)
