Title: how much is 5M
Post by: Rhombicuboctahedron on November 21, 2012, 12:07:17 pm
Hi
So I’m trying to set up something, and a Google page says I will get 5M page view per month

App Engine comes with a set of free resource quotas that will allow your application to serve ~ 5M pageviews per month
I don’t know very much about web programming or the internet, but how much is that? And how many videos would that allow?
I googled and it said something like 5 million page view, and something said that is about 234 minutes of video.

It says that the Google thing you use won't break until you get 5 million pageviews a month. For comparaison, Omnimaga gets around 1 million pageviews a month, so it's a lot.

But if i could get it to work it would mostly be used for videos, so how much is that then?

Depends how your app will be popular. But for a small site, you should be safe.

Well, lets just say that it got popular, but it doesn't take in any money, and the only way to get more than 5M is to pay. Sorry to be so specific, but it kind of does matter. It is a good idea, but I don't want to reveal it until I get it to work.

You could always add some ads to it if it does get popular enough.

Do people click those o.o I always ignore ads.

I have them blocked with adblock. Mainly due to porn ads appearing in the stranges places...
You do earn money though slowly. I have ads on some of my youtube videos, so far google owes me just under $4 :P

@Eeems I tried to monetize Quest for the Legendary Axe and they rejected it, saying I did not give enough proof that it was my own work >.<

@others: I guess it probably depends if the ads gives revenues based on page impressions rather than clicks, but I don't know if the former exists for Google Adsense. Also be careful about the 5M page views thing: Make sure it's really page views, not just hits (especially if you have a site using plenty of PHP files simultaneously in one page or a setup that forces cache update for users (causing images to be re-loaded every click). Hits might include images, zip files, etc. For example, Omnimaga gets around 6-8+- millions hits per month and that excludes OmnomIRC. It only gets about 800000-1 million page views, though (roughly 9 hits per page view). About 30% of all Omnimaga traffic is by bots and web crawlers, though.

I remember that DJ :(
I wonder if they would let you if you tried to monitize it again? I know that it's changed a little since I first started.

Nah it's permanently banned from monetizing. I could try with other songs, though. Nowadays it seems people monetize just anything they have, so maybe they changed their policies or something, but maybe they are much stricter on music.

Apparently many people did and they never reply. They only reply to when you give more info. Also I think when they ask more info, you only have 24 hours to send them, else your vid is permanently rejected with no way to revoke that decision. This is why as soon as I saw this happen, I Immediately turned off monetizing on my La Porte du Soleil vid.

At one point I need to check with Not a Number if he can send me a template of what exactly he sent to Youtube to monetize his Music 2000 stuff. He started monetizing it long before me, though, so maybe they were more lax back then.

One thing I suspect with QftLA, however, is the fact that the video shows Music Generator in action makes the vid not 100% my original content, because I did not make the game. My other vids, which uses my own images with absolutely zero screenshot from the game, might be safer.

I think I have something like $35 sitting there for a year or two in my Google AdSense account. And I can't withdraw it until I have $100 or something.

Well that doesn't go fast O.o You have at least 5 more years to go before you can get the money :o

I think it's $50 for me.
If I was a lot more active, and had a lot more people watching my videos, I'd be making a lot more money off of it.
