Seeing how many people here have sites with a .co.cc subdomain, just thought I'd repost this news here: All *.co.cc sites have been delisted by Google (http://searchengineland.com/google-delists-all-co-cc-domains-from-index-83931) as of July 1st, 2011 (yesterday). If you're just using your .co.cc site as a personal blog or similar small feature, this shouldn't matter much, but if Google search referrals made up a significant portion of your traffic, this can leave an impact.
The reason Google removed all .co.cc sites from their search results was that the vast majority of .co.cc sites are made by spambots for the sole purpose of spamming. It's unfortunate, but Google had to do this to ensure the quality of their search hits.
What can you do, as the owner of a .co.cc site? Again, this doesn't affect you at all unless Google was a significant source of your site traffic, and you needn't bother doing anything. But if you do need your site relisted, here are some recommendations:
- Get a new domain name. Unless there's a specific reason you need a .co.cc subdomain, you can also get a free domain name such as example.tk (http://dot.tk/) (which would actually be shorter than example.co.cc) or example.co.nr (http://freedomain.co.nr/) (this is a masking service and does not allow you to set record values directly).
- Use the hosting provider's subdomain. Most free hosting providers provide their own domain names that you can get a subdomain from for free, such as example.webuda.com (http://www.000webhost.com/), example.x10.mx (http://x10hosting.com/), or example.webs.com (http://www.webs.com/).
- Apply for reconsideration by Google. You can have Google make an exception for your site, but there are terms your site must fulfill. To do this, follow these steps:
- First, make sure your site follows Google's Webmaster Guidelines (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769).. These are rules suggested by Google for a spam-free, quality website. Don't go on until you're sure your site follows these guidelines, or else Google'll just turn your request down.
- Submit your site (http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl) to Google if you haven't done so already. Not terribly important, but it helps.
- Fill out the reconsideration request form (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reconsideration). Note that you must have your site registered with Google Webmaster Tools to do this. It's easy if you already have a Google Analytics account.
Hope that helps some of ya :)

Stupid spambots. And stupid co.cc who didn't care about that. Oh well. You can always access Axe Wiki via http://wiki.axe.omnimaga.org.
-
So. Anyone want to shell out 20 bucks so I can buy a real domain name?
Guess not :/
-
I noticed that the Prizm wiki had disappeared from Google results a day ago. I thought that it was because it had noticed that the URLs were broken, but this... I didn't expect this at all.
-
Screw .co.cc
Prizmwiki has a new domain name.

Well, that solves the Wikipedia problem.

I think that's a better URL than axeparser.co.cc anyway. More unified :)
-
Yeah, I thought wiki.axeparser.co.cc could be kinda shorter, but finally I'll keep this unified.
-
wiki.axeparser.co.cc
wiki.axe.omnimaga.org
One character shorter lol
-
THis sucks. That said if it's impossible to get a custom host with an Omni domain for PrizmWiki or something, I wouldn't mind if it was hosted here, though.

I'm pretty sure it's doable. Qwerty just contact me (or any manager with knowledge of DNS) and you'll get your brand new Omnimaga domain name.

I noticed this when registering a new .co.cc domain and noticed it was paid then I went to investigate why. Well, I think this sucks, but I got another domain though =D
-
co.cc is now paid? ???
-
co.cc is now paid? ???
I tried registering a new domain and I had to pay 3$, maybe it's because I was using an account that had already registered 2, but I think it was a "fresh" one.
-
This sucks. I remember it was free and sometimes we just had to put a tiny banner on our site.
-
No it only makes you pay for "popular" names. Obscure ones you get for free.
-
Hmm, I'd just host somewhere else and use dyndns (https://www.dyndns.com/account/services/hosts/add.html) instead.

No, I think you only get 2 free domains.

I think it's still free, except for some names they consider particularly "valuable" (like axe.co.cc).
So what's your new domain name, ephan?
-
Even Google is going to be paid or locked up soon.
-
I confirm, I'm not able to register more than 2 domains either.
Even Google is going to be paid or locked up soon.
They'll never do that.

Lol, they wouldn't. If search engines were for pay, nobody would see their ads ;)

I still have the old davidgom.co.cc but I got another one somewhere else >:D It was ephan.co.cc I wanted, no idea why it's popular.
-
I guess it's just the two-domain limit then, as t0xic and Juju found.

It isn't, it was a fresh account, it's because ephan is popular somehow.
-
Since this happened, a lot of websites have disappeared (taken down or moved to an unknown location). I don't really think this is fair for google to do, but they can. :\

Yeah, I confirmed that. It said $3 a year even though I did not register any other names. BTW, thegame.co.cc is only $11/year if anyone is interested.
-
I guess names with low number of letters or high number of buzz words aren't free, like .tk.
-
Meh, this kinda sucks.
At least Google is letting you appeal, thought. That's sort of nice of them, I guess.

...which takes up to three months x.x
Just as traffic on my site from Google approached 25%.

3 months!? That's a huge price to pay for someone else's spamish website! :/

Yeah, but I guess nobody's gonna sue Google because nobody who uses a free domain name is trying to make money anyway. And besides, Google's providing this service, so they have the right to pull the plug if they want :-\
Personally I'm thinking of a new domain name and an entirely new name for my site, on a different (free) domain registry. Now imagine the irony if Google blew that one out, too :P
-
.tk?
-
Nope. What do you think of dia.fr.am? :D
A bit more complicated than registering with, say, Co.CC or dotTK, but hey, it works if you can get it to work.
-
dia.fr.am is taken :(
-
Yeah, I just took it :P
-
but....it's spelled diaphragm :(

Whatever. That URL is still cool.
