Title: Web Hosting
Post by: Binder News on June 03, 2012, 11:34:28 am
Okay, so for my Eagle Scout Project, I have decided to build a website for a non-profit organization. I just want to gather feedback on what companies are good hosts, and what companies I should avoid. Any suggestions?

I offer pretty good web hosting on one of my servers for several Omnimaga members. Contact me if you want :)

Hey, another Boy Scout!

Are you writing your proposal atm? I was just wondering how you're going to "develop leadership skills" building a site XD. Unless you're going to recruit a bunch of tech-savvy volunteers ??? Haha, just playing devils' advocate.

Anyway, I use x10hosting for my webcomic. They're free which is nice, but of course they probably wouldn't be able to handle something big like a nonprofit's website :P

You will have trouble getting that approved by your troop leader and eagle coach.
They will seriously see no leadership skills involved...

I'm not saying its a bad idea, just that they will have problems seeing it as a good one. (I'm finishing up mine now)
You will need to hit a strong point with it, but it is very doable.
Realize that "Giving leadership" is not necessarily about teaching people, but about organizing them, telling them what to do and how to get it done, and managing the people you work with.
You need to present leadership to/with two people.
Maybe have a few sections such as art, design, programming, content, etc.

Oh, and i personally like dyndns, but i think that may be more than you want to pay.
How are you going to pay for this?

That will be part of the project.  Will the organization cover the costs?  Maybe you can find a pay once provider.

I unfortunately do not know any free commercial host, since I haven't used any in a long while, but avoid, please avoid Heliohost. They're always down.

they will want a short extension though. Like .com or .org

Then he'll have to pay some money, because no legit domain name with only a short extension are free. There is .tk, but those are very unreliable. It will definitively be something like eaglescoutsitename.57o9.org

.com/org domain names generally cost $9-10 a year.

Well that is a pretty good reason to do a fundraiser that "shows leadership"

Don't the funds have to be raised exclusively for something to help a group of people for example, not even a single penny used to keep the fundraising running?

fundraising can pay for the fundraiser.

I was saying that he buys the website for 4 or 6 years then it gets handled by the beneficiary.

Ok that's good then. And that can work too, unless he absolutely has no money at all.
