Nice!!! I never saw that version of the SNES before.

I got Ultima V for PC MSDOS for $1 -- originally $70 in 1988.

Both the Japanese and European SNES look similar. Only the American one is different (for those who never saw one here is how the 1991 one looked like:

And the 1997 one:

My best game pickups were

-Secret of Mana back in 2001, because it had the official strategy guide in mint condition and the instruction manual/cartridges in decent condition. It had no box, though.
-F-Zero 1997 re-release (the million seller box), still factory-sealed. I bought it in 2009 and I have yet to open it (I already have another F-Zero copy which is the original and already opened, and according to various factory sealing doc, my copy appears to be legit. If it isn't, then the box is surely in great condition anyway and I got it for kinda cheap).
-Zelda: ALttP in French, which was very rare in North America
-Final Fantasy II and III  (not rare but in such high demand that sometimes they're still quite pricey)
-Dragon Warrior 4 NES
-Sega Dreamcast (those things are so hard to find nowadays here >.<)
-All 4 Star Ocean games. Sadly for the 1st I have the PSP version, not the original, but it's still kinda great.
-All other Final Fantasy RPGs. Even if some are still recent, they get harder and harder to find it seems and the PS1 copies we have are mostly original ones, not the Greatest Hits copies.

NEVER EVER SELL A POPULAR CONSOLE RPG! You'll never be able to find it again later and if you do, you'll usually pay far more for it than you sold your original copy for. I learned this lesson when I sold Star Ocean 2 PS1 and Mario RPG. Even Final Fantasy 13 is hard to find today.

If Ultima was this expensive in 1988, imagine with inflation how much it would have been today if games didn't decrease in value over time

Also nice to see you around again t0xic_kitt3n

I kept my GameCube and my GBA SP (out of my five games for that one, the best are Super Mario Bros 3 and Pokémon Fire Red which I'm currently replaying for the fourth time :P). My father wants me to sell the GC but I'll never do that.

Also Deep Thought, this one was hilarious. The best part is that I'm currently playing HL2. :D

I also picked Alundra 2 yesterday and Legacy of Kain earlier today for Playstation. I saw a Commodore 64, Colecovision and Sega Master System too, but sadly didn't have enough money with me and the SMS had no power adapter anyway.

Wow, the only thing I own is a PS2.
To play most other classic games, I use PC emulators

But now I feel like I'm missing out on something here.
I guess it's like a book.  You can have digital books on an eReader, but there's something about holding a physical book.

I guess having the physical copies of old classic video games is more satisfying than having them as just a ROM file on your computer...
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 10, 2013, 07:48:18 pm
In some cases, it's better to play on the original console if the gamepad is better than what you have on the computer and for compatibility purposes, but in other cases where controls are terrible or the screen sucks (like on the GBA or Game Gear where it's hard to see anything) it's better to play on an emulator.

There are also savestates on a computer but some might consider this as some form of cheating :P

Also some old games get more valuable with the years due to being collector items so some people can make money from them.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Fireicee1 on February 10, 2013, 07:51:32 pm
Yeah, I guess I'm just a few years too young to have gotten any of the classic consoles/games when they were out/popular.  I was born in 1997.  I think I remember owning a Gameboy Color when I was like 4 or 5, and later a Gameboy Advance, but I have no idea what happened to either of those things.

If you ever get an original Nintendo DS, go to the screen options then turn OFF the backlight (I don't think it's possible on the 3DS). That's how bad the Game Boy Advance LCD was.

Metroid Prime for $6. Then my parents took away and subsequently lost the game, so I learned how to run Wii/GC games off an SD card.

That sucks D: (in both senses ), I would hate if that happened to me considering how rare and hard to find those games get after a while. Nice that you found it for $6 in the first place, though.

Also the two games I got for the Atari Lynx aren't too bad. At first I worried about the horrible LCD but then I realized the brightness was maxed out so I just lowered it a lot so I can see stuff and it's pretty nice.

It's like a 8 bit console but with slightly better graphics and 16 bit console effects like zooming.

I might try to get the Commodore 64 if it has everything available to play games. The store guy also has Pitfall but apparently it's rare and it still had the factory seal (I think it was opened, but I could be wrong).

Btw avoid the Mass Effect trilogy unless the box says it includes all DLC! Gamestop charges $59.99 for it, yet they sell Mass Effect 2 used for $12.99 and Mass Effect 3 for $14.99. The online site in Canada charges $14.99 for an used copy of Mass Effect 1. Just get them used separately if you can get the downloadable content for free.

Also the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 is $59.99. It's a special edition, but before buying it, remember that you can get the PS3 or 360 version for at least $40 cheaper.

Yes they are. For tapes, I wonder if you could plug in a computer in the speaker port instead of the tape drive.

I still have my Commodore 64 (2 of them, both SX-64s) and a Commodore 128. Yes, you can hook up 5.25", 3.5", HDDs, and Tape drives up to them. I used to buy Compute's Gazette (a magazine) and type in the programs contained within it. But... once you got a floppy drive... no more typing in games. There are well over 10000 games produced for the C64. Check out Arnold's website (http://arnold.c64.org). You could also buy 100s of cartridges for the C64 too.

Aren't there tapes and floppy disks? ???

LOL... Wut?
The C64 had a serial port (a precursor to today's USB). You could daisy chain up to 4 devices (printers, floppy drives, etc) to this port. The regular C64 had a different port specifically for the tape drive.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2013, 12:54:28 am
Oh ok so you need to buy the drives separately? D: That sucks because the C64 I saw didn't seem to have any. I guess I could check on Ebay how much those drives cost before, in case. :P (I know certain consoles/computer add-ons and games can go up for $500-8000)

If you buy a standard C64 or standard C128, then you will need to buy a 1541, 1571, or 1581 floppy drive. A trusty 1541 will run you only $20 on ebay.

Or you could buy an SX-64 with a built in 1541 floppy drive.
Ebay - SX-64 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Commodore-SX-64-Portable-Executive-Computer-Working-/230924863565?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item35c431c84d)

Or you could buy a C128D with a built in 1571 floppy drive:
Ebay - C128D (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Commodore-128D-Computer-joystick-RCA-cable-and-Victory-Road-Disk-Working-/121014964795?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D5511812478916661273%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D121014964795%26)

Note: that guy is crazy... $750 for a C128D... absolute madness.

The C128 is quite a cool computer... It contains 2 completely different CPUs: a 2 MHz MOS 8502 (100% compatible with C64's MOS 6510) and a 4MHz Z80.

The C128 had 3 modes of operation: C128 mode, C64 mode, and CPM mode (using the Z80). Very cool!

I made a cable that allows me to connect my pc via the printer port to the c64's floppy drive's serial. Now I can use physical floppies with my winvice emulator. So I can edit, write and read files from them. It's a good way to back up old homebrew software or my SID music files. It's also great for pirating games (and playing new releases such as canabalt64 and vvvvvv64 )

I made a cable like that too. I think it is called the X1541 cable. Very useful cable. Which utility do you use to make use of the drive on the PC? I use an old program called Star Commander.

I still have my old Timex Sinclair 1000. It's basically the USA version of the Sinclair ZX-81 but with twice the RAM -- a whopping 2KB. LOL!

Yeah, i recall playing  ZX Spectrum games with my girlfriend at the time. BTW, if you really want to play those games nowadays, you still can.
Here you can find some ZX Sinclair Spectrum emulators: executables for several machines: windows/ubuntu/etc (http://fms.komkon.org/Speccy/) and more  executables + emulator source code (http://fuse-emulator.sourceforge.net/).

In general, things did improve quite a bit l, i mean: +speed +video/sound quality -price, BUT the rationale behind the games didn't change that much. Well, navigating back into the past can also bring nice memories and food for thought too. :)

Yep. The power switch is a disaster though. It's designed very poorly and it hasn't aged very well. Have a look at my atari2600. That thing is built like a tank and it has a powerswitch that is an actual switch.

Wow that is great Keoni29!

Btw guys don't you hate the SNES power switch lol? (At least on the NTSC US/CAN console) When you turn it ON/OFF it does one heck of a huge CLICK sound, so as soon as you used it everyone in the house knew when you were playing the SNES or stopping doing so. :P

As for game pickups, this is what I got today in Quebec City:

However, this isn't all: Look at what I found in the NHL 94 manual!

That is the receipt from the original purchase at Consumers Distributing that the original buyer left in the instruction booklet. Consumers Distributing went under in 1996. Thankfully it didn't cost $68.88 again lol, but rather $4.99. I actually expected more than the average sports game, because this version of EA's Sports NHL hockey is particularly popular in Quebec compared to every other and although it's not too hard to find here, on the Internet it is near impossible to run into a copy.

Indeed. But of course it would require demand if someone wanted to sell them or something :P

That said this is a bit why I kept my last few Zellers store bags. At the time they were supposed to go away but now they're leaving 3 stores open out of the 180+. If they change names or brand maybe the old bags will become vintage :P

Also Actraiser 2 finally arrived! That game is fucking hard though, even in Easy mode! O.O

Also Stunt Race FX is really cool for SNES standards. The only issue is that the car is kinda big so you can't seem much stuff ahead and since the framerate is kinda low it can be hard to control sometimes.

I just bought an atari2600 jr online for €10, so I can play atari while my original atari is waiting for its video upgrade to arrive in the mail (at least the components I need for it) I also just went ahead and bought castlevania for the NES, because I don't own a lot of NES games and I just want a few more classics. I already got mario and probotector (contra), but other than that I do not own any good games for the system.

Where the hell did you get an Atari for that cheap? :O On Ebay.ca, no Atari 2600/jr go for lower than $100 including shipping unless they're broken.

I live in the Netherlands. It all depends on where you live and how popular it was in your country.
Edit: I have to pay €6,75 shipping on top of the €10 by the way.

You must have turned me into a metapod, because I just used harden
Edit: Oh, you mean't buying video games not pick up lines, I will see myself out.
This is my favorite post in the thread!

As for my best video game pickups, i've gotta say:
1. Phoenix
2. Bubble Bobble
3. Joltima
4. BomberKids
5. Lotus Turbo Challenge

...all picked up around 2000/2001 for a grand total of.. nothing (unless you count the effect they had on my grades)!

If it's gotta be something you paid for, i'd say getting a brand spanking new copy of Legend of Legaia for $15 in 1999 is up there.

EDIT: Also, a new copy of the GC version of Phantasy Star Online for $20 in 2003 was another game i bought on a whim that sucked hours and hours of my life away.

Also, the Gamecube version of PSO has sucked up countless hours of my life. I have 2 characters over level 100 on it. :D There's supposed to be a new one coming out soon, so I'm kind of interested.

Just picked up a used copy of the world ends with you. I've been looking for that game forever!

Can PSO GC players play with other consoles' players or are they all separate servers? Also I wish I picked up PSU for 360 back in 2009. EBGames had it for $4.99 when they ran crazy deals on games back then, but I guess I was kinda worried about it being that cheap due to not being popular or something. Also apparently PSU's 360 server shutted down in 2012.

DJ: They can on fan servers, but things can get quite buggy. This is due to differences between the versions. Some items and things have different stats and it crashes sometimes. Also, I tried PSU and didn't like it at all. It played very differently. :(

Aw ok D: . Too bad then x.x

Also my Atari 2600 has finally arrived! :D I was surprised at how light the model I got was, considering the previous one (that had 6 switches) was apparently very heavy. It came with Space Invaders, Combat, Pitfall (awesome game btw), Spider Fight (another great game) and Donkey Kong and it was in very good condition. Only issue is that my TV didn't seem to like Space Invaders much, but I guess that can be expected with an early '80s console :P.

Hopefully Solaris, along with my batch of NES/SNES games arrive soon as well (I ordered another copy of Sonic 3 by mistake so I'm probably gonna give it to juju since I already have a boxed one now)

Update: The following has now arrived!

Sonic 3
Super Turrican (awesome SNES game :D)
Illusion of Gaia (Illusion of Time in Europe)
Legacy of the Wizard
Startropics
Startropics II: Zoda Revenge
Crystalis

And Soul Blazer (which Illusion of Gaia is the unnoficial sequel of) should arrive shortly.

Ouch that sucks D:. I know JJgames sells it for $41 here (although Simon's Quest is $8 and Dracula's Curse $19) but I hate when they use bad shipping packages. In JJGames' case this can happen too because in my case, they put games inside a box with no protection at all and I know someone who bought fewer games and they came in a regular envelope with no bubble. Thankfully all my games were in perfect condition but I worry that if someone buys a small amount of them that the package could get crushed or something during shipping.

Also I forgot to mention that I bought Solaris for Atari 2600 (most advanced graphics ever seen in an Atari 2600 game) too a while ago. This one looks pretty much new although the box is a bit damaged. I hope it arrives soon. That would add to my small Atari collection (DK, Pitfall, Spider Fighter, Space Invader and Combat)

WOW dracula's curse goes for a lot more here!

I took off the back of my mario bros and duckhunt cartridge and swapped it out with the castlevania one. I don't need to buy atari2600 games anymore because I have this now:

Well actually I do have to buy games that are larger than 4KB since I do not have bankswitching logic installed yet.

Yeah but sometimes it's fun as a collector or if you absolutely want the real cartridges.

In my case the Solaris copy I got was even unopened (plastic wrap still on with only some small holes) and in perfect condition so I just got a brand new cartridge :P (it was cheap too considering it was still sealed and not crushed or anything)

Btw is it me or are Atari boxes oversized for the small cartridges? :P They're like the same size as some computer games.

Did I ever mention that when I first read the title of this topic I thought that it meant "Your best video game pickup lines"? As in you use a video game reference to try to get a girl.  Just wanted to say that.

But really all of my old video games were donated to me and I never bought any.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Keoni29 on March 22, 2013, 05:16:38 am
Yeah someone else thought that as well. I wish people donated games to me :P Instead I rarely get old PC's that I can fix up, upgrade and sell for a bit of profit. They usually go for €50, but I have to upgrade it for about €30 in order to sell them today.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 22, 2013, 07:26:33 am
selling PC games is hard because the serial key is often already used and the buyer won't trust you in not using it online (for example, if the same serial key is used on 2 different connections some servers ban it) and sometimes the serial key is missing. This is why most game stores don't accept back used computer games here.

Quick loot pic.

List:

Games:
-Atari2600 games:
--Jars' revenge €3
--Demon attack €4
-NES games:
--Kirby €10
--Megaman2 €15
--Mario bros and duckhunt (I needed a copy with a nicer label) €4
-Snes games:
--Fzero
-Megadrive games:
--Sonic (the original!) €4
-Philips videopac games:
--9: Programmer (with large and detailed orange manual!)

Hardware:
-N64 €2,50 + jumperpack €2 + powersupply €6 (yep... I bought parts and made an n64 for €10,50 and it works like a charm)
-NES clone €8,50 (has nicer video output than a real nes and it plays smoother because the CPU is clocked faster. If only I could mod it to 60Hz)
-4x Commodore 64 reset button. €2 (I want the userport connectors!)

Freebies!
-Philips MSX1 (it was part of a deal with someone I know from atariage.com. I sent him parts so he could repair his commodore 64!)
-3Gb HDD
-6pack (6-in-1) with manual (woohoo) €0 (got it thrown in as a bonus)

Kirby Adventure++ :D

And nice selection in overall. I myself got Defender and Asteroids for the 2600 yesterday but the store only had copies of those games and two other games (Missile Command and Yars Revenge I think). They were marked at $4.35 but they scanned at $2.50 each (although back in 2005 or so I recall seeing them at $0.99 there).

Also does your NES clone play sound correctly? I noticed that most NES clones don't emulate sound as accurately as the SNES.

And wow at the N64 total price! O.O

By the way the only bad news about my recent game pickups is that my copy of Solaris is PAL, so it doesn't play on my CRT TV and I have to use my LCD instead, on which it's playable aside from slightly different colors. It's hard to tell if an Atari 2600 game is PAL or NTSC because it isn't stated on the box or cartridge >.< and Ebay often wrongly list them as NTSC if the user is from USA.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Keoni29 on March 24, 2013, 05:28:08 pm
Some of my game cartridges have a letter on them. B means PAL B, P also means PAL. I figure A or N means ntsc. I do not own any ntsc games though.
After I bought yars revenge I saw it in a bin somewhere else for €1 >.<

Edit: it does the sound quite well actually. Except for one stage in megamanz2 the echo sounds a bit off. I looked inside and I cannot find an obvious way to make this thing output ntsc.

Just got Donkey Kong Country 3 SNES, Lost Viking Sega Genesis and a NES controller at Microplay (they started selling SNES/NES/Genesis/N64 games again). DKC3 was $39.99 boxed (no manual), but they had a 2 for 3 promotion on used games so I got the NES controller for free. Everything was in good condition.

Also apparently now you can even exchange a SNES game for new games and they almost give you full value when it's an exchange for a game of similar price, so if Brain Lord ever happened to pick up in value that could be a good way to get rid of it (I don't like that game much). I was actually joking with the cashier saying I could bring back a brand new sealed copy of Earthbound but of course that wouldn't work since the store wouldn't even have enough cash to pay the difference. :P

That NES clone with the higher clock wouldn't play the games smoother. It would play them faster. NES games, like calculator apps, are not synced to a clock. They are cycle-based.

I assume that sound would be pitched up too, right? (Like how it's pitched down if playing NTSC games on a modified PAL NES
)

It's supposed to, but most timing signals comes from the ppu I think which outputs 50Hz pal composite. I think it's pretty much the same, but I have not hooked up the sound yet.

I don't think the sound gets pitched up since it's handled by a different chip (with its own clock.) This would be why 50 hz and 60 hz games sound the same.

Yesterday I got Mortal Kombat 3 SNES, boxed. The cashier told me it had no manual, but when I arrived home and opened the box there was actually a manual included (although in poor condition). I also got Nino Kuni for the PS3.

Today I went to Quebec City to check two of the game stores I know, but one was closed on Sundays. The other had some new interesting games, but some were expensive, so I picked Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse for the SNES, Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage for the Nintendo 64 and Battletoads for the NES.

A few weeks ago I also got Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic & Knuckles. That last one seems cool because you can put a Sonic 2 or 3 cartridge on top of it for extra goodies.

Well I finally got a Sega Master System, along with 2 games for it (one for free that sucks, but also Space Harrier :D), a dozen of Atari 2600 games (including Battlezone and another 3D tank game). I bought an extra copy of Solaris, which, this time, is NTSC.

Aside from Battlezone (which was almost new except the top of the box) and Solaris, around 10 other Atari games were $10, but then the guy decided to give me a bunch of others that I didn't have but didn't want for free (including E.T).

When I have money again that is allocated to retro gaming purchases, I will probably come back there since there's a crapload of retro stuff in the store's basement (hoping the boss is there so I can access the extra storage rooms where extra games lie). The old consoles are expensive, though x.x (especially the boxed ones). There must be plenty of Woolco and Consumers Distributing receipts in game boxes there.

Ah yeah and I got Breath of Fire II at Play N Trade, which was ridiculously expensive, but not as bad as last Summer before they bought the bankrupt Dimension chain. Last summer at Dimension it was $89.99 like back in the '90s in Canada, but now it was $69.99, which isn't too bad considering the cartridge alone seems to go for $56.49 on Ebay.ca (although JJGames estimates it at $45) and the instruction manual $20.54.

Ooh nice Sonic Adventure DX. I myself have Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast (only the CD) and it's kinda fun.

As of today after work, I got Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64. It was roughly the same price as online ($39.99) even though it was like new (although there was no box/manual), because the game was brought to the store in terrible condition (it wouldn't start anymore) so they didn't give much money back for it. The store refurbished/cleaned the game before putting it back on sale.

Nice game by the way ^^

Dude, I LOVE the Ghosts 'n Goblins series. I have the Super NES one somewhere... I haven't played it in ages, but I only ever got to the end of the second stage. I need to give it a crack again. Be warned, that game is ridiculously difficult, and has accounted for many controllers through TVs in the past. :P
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Keoni29 on June 03, 2013, 05:29:20 am
Wow! And those TV's were made out of very sturdy glass as opposed to the weak plastic lcd tv's today. Imagine how angry you had to get in order to throw a snes controller trough your CRT. I have gargoyles quest for the gameboy (which is a spinoff of the franchise starring the red demon as the main protagonist) and it's hard as nails. You have to remember the levels and attack patterns. You will inevitably die the first couple of times and progress slowly trough the levels. Enemy placement is sometimes incredibly cheap and on the original gameboy they are very hard to dodge too.
Title: Re: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 03, 2013, 12:50:25 pm
Yeah Gargoyle Quest is hard as well. I have the 3rd one for the SNES (which is actually called Demon's Crest) and it's challenging, although not as much as the NES game.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: TIfanx1999 on June 03, 2013, 02:30:28 pm
There's one of those gargoyle games that Is rpgish if I remember correctly. I think it might've been on the NES. I also took a trip down to a store today that had some retro games and systems. They also had books, dvds, music and some MTG stuff. For games, they had Atari 2600 and 5200 games, NES games, Gameboy, Genesis games, Gamegear, SNES games, and some newer systems too. Prices seemed ok, but their selection sucked. I wasn't really impressed by the store as a whole either. The one girl working the front couldn't even be assed to say "hello" or anything at all to me for that matter, even though it was my first time visiting the store. Such a shame. I had high hopes for the place.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 04, 2013, 03:04:22 pm
The RPG-ish one was Demon's Crest I think (SNES). There was a world map where it was possible to revisit past stages and houses, and Stage 2 had a village at the beginning where you could buy items and spells. You also got hearts containers like in Zelda and permanent power ups you could equip.

The NES one has somewhat of an RPG feel too with the village since it's top-down view, but I think you have lives.

And yeah in many cases used game stores that sells retro stuff only sells sports games and crappy SNES games. It really have to be a store that specialize itself in retro gaming to have better stuff, but then you end up with a store that follows the online market regarding game prices, so don't count on getting a cheap copy of Earthbound or something. :P

Newest purchases in the last 2 weeks (I might have forgotten some):

Sega Genesis
Shining Force II
-Awesome game so far, although to be honest I'm not too fond of tactic RPG battles. If it had standard or action battles I would probably like it more.

El Viento
-Nice arcade platform game, but if you ever decide to buy the game based on "HP" and "EXP" in the screenshots, don't expect it to be an RPG. I guess it tries to pass itself off as one, in order to attract RPG fans, but in face EXP is useless in-game and is simply your score. It's a very entertaining game, though. It's the first of a trilogy, but apparently the next two games suck.

Ecco the Dolphin
-Somewhat interesting kind of game. You are a doplhin and navigate through puzzles underwater and have to solve some riddles sometimes. It's kinda fun, although quite hard. Graphics are really great (reminded me of Donkey Kong Country)

NES
Dr. Mario
-Some sort of Tetris-like game which can be kinda fun. I got it since it was only $5.99 though :P

Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
Super Game Boy adapter

SNES
The Lion King
-Platform game that is a little hard, but fun. Graphics are nice as well.

Toy Story
-IMHO it has even better graphics than Donkey Kong Country series, because the textures and stuff is as detailed, and not only the floor is mode 7, but the background, which uses parralax scrolling, was made in a way so that the objects in the tilemap looks 3D. I think some of the decor elements are even part of the Mode 7 floor at times, so that they look even more 3D. It makes the game looks really advanced for a SNES game. It is a bit confusing and too hard, though.

Terranigma (reproduction)
-This one is an English NTSC reproduction cartridge (and box) since the original game never came out in North America. The cartridge and box design looks identical to other NTSC games, but the Nintendo official seal now says "Unnoficial Nintendo Reproduction" in order to distinguish it from counterfeit games, the screws are made of plastic and larger and the back-label which explains how to take care of it was replaced with an unnoficial one. It isn't perfect but it really looks great in my collection and I can finally play the game on a real NTSC console. :D If I ever get compatible screws, my plan is to take one cheap SNES game I own (such as Space Ace, Vortex or Wing Commander), then replace the back label and screws with regular ones, so it looks even closer to a real game. :P

Nintendo 64
-Jet Force Gemini
-Bomberman 64

Playstation
Gran Turismo
-Was $4.99 complete

Playstation 2
-Ar Tonelico

Xbox 360 (all games were $9.99 each)
-The First Templar
-Divinity II
-Two Worlds II

Nintendo DS
-Mario & Luigi: Bowser Inside Story

What I really want to get in the future (assuming I can get them for not too much):
-Robotrek (SNES)
-Journey to Silius (NES)
-Rocket Knight Adventures (Sega Genesis)
-NSMBWii U
-Mario Kart Wii U
-Zelda Wind Waker remake (Wii U)
-Possibly the new Sonic game (Wii U)

Of course those purchases will most likely be scattered through the next months or seasons, especially if I make more interesting discoveries.

Some carts have more rf shielding in them I think. (That's a bit of metal to protect the circuitry from interference.)

Ah. Thought it was additional memory chips or extension cards or something since the ROM is probably bigger than most others since it's a big RPG and everything.

Recent pickups
PSX
Metal gear solid €2
Strike Force Hydra €3.50 (terrible game. Don't buy it)

PS2
SSX €1
SSX3 €3 (logic)

GameCube
Metroid prime €10
Memory card €6.80

NES
Bart vs the space mutants €1 (again: terrible game. Don't get it unless you find it with a nice box for a low price and you collect for the nes)

Gba
Metroid fusion €7 (loose cartridge)

And I'm also getting two TI83+ calculators for €30 including shipping for one of them.

Yeah Juju I remember that the N64 Ocarina of time was a particularly heavy cartridge. I have a bunch of N64 games and none of them are even close to as heavy as Zelda.

@Art yeah, although a bunch were bought a few weeks ago, some others last week and the rest a few days ago. A few others were ordered a few weeks ago online. I just didn't post about them yet.

I wish I lived in the Netherland because games seems much cheaper there O.O. Over here, Metroid Fusion is like $20-40 and I think I saw a copy of Metroid Prime for $70 once. They might just be in higher demand here, though, or maybe you got games translated in Dutch? (non-English/French classics tend to be cheaper because they aren't as much in demand)

Ah ok. Over here, from 1993 to 1999, every game manual were only available in English, despite Quebec province being mostly Francophone, and the only two bilingual games that came out before 2004 or so were Super Hockey (called NHL Stanley Cup here) and Diddy Kong Racing. The only unilingual French console game I ever saw in Quebec was Zelda: A Link to the Past and the Halo series. I think local laws changed afterward, though, because almost every Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii games have options to switch to French subs or even dubs. The ones that don't have such option still have French instructions most of the time and stores now warn customers that the game is in English. From 1985 to 1992, instructions were also both in French and English for NES and SNES games.

In europe some snes games have dubs. Super metroid has german and french dubs for the story. Instruction manuals and the text on the back of games is dutch, english, german and french here most of the time.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Juju on June 29, 2013, 04:35:16 pm
Well, for games themselves, back when they were on cartridges with limited memory I guess they didn't deemed important to translate games in French just for Québec for American releases, but some games did get translated, like Super Mario 64 which had a language choice in European releases IIRC. It's kinda weird, I own a English-only copy while I have a friend who got his in French. But now that all the games are on CDs, the developers can do what they want and only worry for NTSC/PAL issues.

Rom size was not always a problem. Some genesis games packed the english and japanese text in one rom. It detected the region of the console and showed the corresponding language. Streets of rage has that.

IIRC over here Super Metroid has English and Japanese as options. I think the reason why so few games were released in French over here before was because they felt it was pointless considering there are only about 7-8 million of French people in Quebec and barely in the rest of Canada and USA. This is why, for example, the French version of Starcraft that came out over here only let you connect to the European server, while the ENglish one let you connect to the North American server. (Of course now the region-lock was removed with the release of the Expansion Set)

At least if it runs XP or lower now you can install Starcraft Brood War without having to download a 1.2 GB file and your graphic card has better chances to run it without stuttering. :P (the game runs slightly slower on newer computers)

Also I got UN Squadron for SNES and some rather strange NES game called Athena. I saw Valkyrie Profile for the PS1 as well but it was $139.99 >.<.

I just picked up 5 games for €2,50 each. Some are in pretty rough shape, but they play well.
Rayman DS
Wario Ware Touched (DS)
Frogger's Adventure (GBA)
Donkey Kong Country (GBA)
SnowCross(GC)

Not in box, but still nice finds. (Oh who am I kidding, these are all mediocre. The best games on the stack are donkey kong and rayman and they are not in the best condition) The seller put up an ad with a picture showing all kinds of pokémon games, mario 64 ds, yoshi's island etc.  All games in the ad were €2,50. Too bad all of the good games were picked out already. I wished I saw this ad earlier :P

Just avoid Pokemon Silver and Gold unless you have soldering skills and feel like replacing the save battery every 5 years or so. In NES games batteries can last decades, but these two Pokemon games use a real-time clock that causes the battery to wear out 10 times faster.

I got pokemon ruby and I crammed a cr2030 in there. It fits without modification and there is no need to get the smaller more expensive battery. It does not look pretty though cause there is no label on the cart anymore, but shit: it was 99 cents. (I'm gonna pop some tags...)

I picked aladdin for snes up yesterday and I played it for a bit. The first levels aren't that difficult, but at the lava bit it gets really tricky. Luckily you are given a password so you start off at this point. It's a really cool game with nice graphics and the control scheme is very basic, so it's easy to pick up and play. I recommend this game to everyone with a snes!

I just got Pokémon Heartgold complete (in the cardboard box that includes the Pokéwalker), brand new, at Staples in a bargain bin for $19.99. The other day I also got Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis complete in box for $9.99, as well as Super Mario Land 2 for the Game Boy and last weekend I got a SNES Game Genie, Ghosts 'n' Goblins for the NES, Top Gear 3000 and Zoop for the Sega Genesis (which was brand new). I also got Pitfall II for the Atari 2600.

It's incredible how much cheaper Sega Genesis games are compared to their SNES counterparts over where I live. I guess it's because 1) Sega was not really popular over here and 2) SNES boxes were made of cardboard for the most part ans would get torn down much easier by kids, so complete copies of SNES games are much more rare than Sega Genesis/Mega Drive ones.

I would recommend the SNES version. In the sega version the music is not great and the gameplay is a bit meh. You get a sword and you use that troughout the game. The emphasis is on using the sword instead of platforming.

I know that in some cases, Genesis music sounded crispier and higher quality than SNES music in terms of sampling, but it sounded more limited due to many sounds being chiptune-like compared to the MIDI-like sounds of the SNES with reverb effects. However, early Sega Genesis music (1989-90) was often on-par with Japanese Sega Master System and Turbografx-16  and drums sounded like crap. After 1990 it really depended of the game, but I know that in many cases the developers totally ruined the audio when porting SNES games to the Sega console. I think it wasn't as bad when the Sega port was developed by a different company, though.

Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
-I already had a copy, but the label was almost completely faded and the copy I just got for $10 included the box and is in pretty good condition. Gonna get rid of my other copy soon.

The Lawnmower Man (SNES)
-Although the game isn't that much related to the movie (and thus, is much less gory), it's still kinda fun. It alternates between shooting platformer and 3D tunnels. Game was boxed with manual, but no case insert (*cough*I'll probably just take the one from Space Ace :P*cough*). I was really surprised that it was actually good, because most games based on movies suck.

On The Ball (SNES)
-In this one you are a ball that you move around by rotating the map. It reminds me of some Sonic bonus stages actually. You must reach the end of the stage before time runs out and there are many obstacles. Pretty awesome game that should maybe be ported to calcs (assuming top-down view mode 7 is fast enough). This one only included the box and cartridge.

Darn that is nice. The PS1 still goes for $19.99 and PS2 for $39.99-59.99 at retro game stores here. The GB and GBA ranges from $9.99 to $19.99, but I can't seem to find a GBA SP anywhere. Not that I care anyway since my bro still got his original DS that can play GBA carts.

Off-topic, I wonder if it's possible to play old DS games in multiplayer link play by using two different systems, such as a 3DS and an original DS?

I'm fairly certain DS's can run GB/GBC games, the only problem is, they don't fit.  :banghead: I've tried multiplayer with GBA on DS's a lot, despite my stupidity, it doesn't work. :P

The GB/GBC uses completely different hardware that Nintendo included in the GBA (SP) but not the GBA Micro and DS (Lite), so the DS isn't backwards compatible with GB/GBC games.

I think I still have 2 of these somewhere (a black and a red one). I don't ever remember them making them without a light, but they did release one with a brighter light later on in the systems lifetime IIRC.

That is correct Sorunome. The DSI and 3DS lack a slot for GBA cartridges.

Most SP have a frontlight. The ones with backlight are more rare.

I'm fairly certain DS's can run GB/GBC games, the only problem is, they don't fit.  :banghead:
The GB/GBC uses completely different hardware that Nintendo included in the GBA (SP) but not the GBA Micro and DS (Lite), so the DS isn't backwards compatible with GB/GBC games.
Exactly that though they could as well throw in some software emulation like the Wii virtual console.

Also, are GBA SP's really that hard for people to find?  O.O Pretty much everyone at my high school has one. I have 2.
It's the best iteration of the GBA series. Yup, it's pretty hard to find. Unlike the stock GBA with a fragile D-Pad, the SP got backlit, pretty good dimensions and a rocking good button set!

They aren't compatible with original GBA plugable accessories, like Link Cable or NGC connector. YOu have to find a compatible version, rarer than the original...

The DS can only play GBA games not GB/GBC ones. D:

Also for the mtuliplayer thing I think it's possible for DS games but not for GBA games.

I'm fairly certain DS's can run GB/GBC games, the only problem is, they don't fit.  :banghead: I've tried multiplayer with GBA on DS's a lot, despite my stupidity, it doesn't work. :P

many people get rid of their old GBA because the screen is almost impossible to see then they get a backlit one instead. I bet that in a few years we'll see both the GBA SP and GB Players for $200 on Ebay x.x

Wouldn't doubt it, for example. I found the lowest price (on Ebay) for a "Yu-Gi-Oh Duel armband" (The arm deck holder thingies...) was $250 used, $500 unopened...
I was like, I'm gonna keep mine in the closet for another year. >:D

Darn wow I didn't realize Yu-Gi-Oh stuff could go for that high except the cards.

As for my games only a few that I own went higher than I originally paid for, because the others are either too common and not enough in demand or not that impressive. Only Demon's Crest, Final Fantasy III, Zelda AlttP French Edition, Secret of Mana and my unopened copy of F-Zero probably went higher in value than the price I originally paid.

Well I haven't had any spectacular game pickups, but I guess going to a sort of electronic/games store and picking up some games, for less than $20 each, PC games that were at the time only a few years old and that I liked.

I had played Civilization IV, from a borrowed copy and really wanted to buy it before hand. This was sometime in 2008-09. Then I saw a Civilization IV Complete single DVD-Rom Case, which not only contained the base game, but also the two expansions Warlords and Beyond the Sword (no Colonization unfortunately as it wasn't released at the time, though it's not an expansion pack :) ). Total price was less than $20 AUD as I said, which is pretty good for such a high quality game. Since then I've played it and used it on several computers and still is good worth for money today.

Other games I got pretty cheap include The Settlers V: Heritage of Kings, Bionicle Heroes (I nearly finished this game!), and a few others, at that time.

PS: I have never played any Final Fantasy game :O

I got final fantasy 12 for the ps2, but I don't think it is the best one to get into the series with (because there were too much stats to worry about). I picked it up because it was only €1. Complete in box :3

If you want an old school one with 3d graphics I'd recommend IX. It was the last one released on the PSone, and it's fantastic. XII isn't bad though, and that was a great price.

For older ones, you can't beat the classics. FFI is my favorite. I can't really explain why, but it's really a fantastic game. I didn't come to appreciate it so much until later. *edit* Forgot to mention FFII which is also pretty good and has a cool xp system.

The first Final Fantasy game I every played was IV, which is also great. VI is also highly recommended and is the last one that was on the Super NES console. Lots of people rave about VII, but I'm not really a fan. VIII was pretty shitty IMO. X wasn't bad, but the xp system is weird. III and V were kind of weird and not to much worth mentioning imo. Final Fantasy Tactics for game boy advance is also quite nice. /end nerd rambling.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 04, 2013, 10:59:30 pm
Personally, my main problem with FFI for the NES was the extreme amount of grinding required to progress in the game. Although it's a classic, I prefer to play the Playstation 1 port in easy mode. I had the same issue with the Playstation 1 version of Final Fantasy IV so I prefer the SNES or GBA versions (which are much easier).

I didn't like FFII experience system, because it was mostly luck-based. You could nearly kill your own characters 10 times in one battle, only to end up receiving no stat increase at all, simply because in addition to the requirements for stat increases, there was also a 50-80% chance that you get no increase at all. Also it caused some balance issues as you progressed, because magic took forever to level up compared to attacks, so at the end of the game, most magic did 200 damage and attacks did 1000, then there was that final boss that healed himself by 5000 HP by draining 1500 HP from one of your char. That LV system was innovative, but it was very broken.

I liked VII, but I'm not a huge fan of that kind of story that is set in some modern ghetto when it comes to adventure/RPGs. I loved the rest, though, so it's my 2nd favorite behind FFVI. I never liked VIII, though, because it seemed like more a love story with missions rather than a FF game. I liked FFIX except maybe the extremely slow-paced battles (especially when Quina is casting blue magic). As for FFIII and V I didn't mind them, although I didn't get into them as much. I seemed a bit overwhelmed by the incredibly large amount of jobs to master, so I always worried that 90% of my jobs would remain underleveled.

I never got into FFX or higher, because after 2000, I stopped buying new consoles since I couldn't afford them and all I had was a SNES, NES and PS1. It took until 2005 before we buy newer generation consoles again, but by then, I was not into gaming as much anymore.

Even if I was still into gaming, though, I assure you that I would never get FFXI or XIV, even if they're kinda good, simply because I will never pay a monthly fee to play a MMORPG.

And I finally got a Wii U! :D

I got the 32 GB model so it came with Nintendo Land, and I also bought NSMBU used. I am planning to get the Luigi expansion too.

Besides that, Saturday I had purchased some older games at a flea market such as Cybernator, Top Gear 2, Mega Man 2 NES (all for $45 together), Speedy Gonzales, Wave Race 64 and Ecco the Dolphin 2.

Sadly all video game sellers there knew how the retro gaming market worked, so most rare games were at Ebay prices. However, the $20 Mega Man and $7 Cybernator deal was nice considering they're like $30 and $20 each, online (excluding shipping). Most games were usually slightly lower priced than on Ebay, but $200 for Bubble Bobble Part II NES is still something I would probably not pay, even if I'm saving $40. >.<

Nice DJ. I'm gonna get a 3DS (maybe even XL) for $90USD on sale. :D That's. about €70 so I'm saving €100-130 from the French price. O.O

Wow where do they offer such rebate?? O.O

I paid like $169.99 for my 3DS a few years ago (the day after the price dropped from $249.99).

Btw it seems they fixed the difficulty in NSMBU. In NSMB2 (3DS) I had 75 lives at the end of world 1 without even trying and most star coins were easy to get. Now you still get a lot of lives, but the stages are harder and getting the star coins is much harder.

I just got back from a large indoor fleamarket. It was a 30 minute drive and the parking was expensive, but in the end it was worth it. I got myself quite a lot of cool stuff.

NES:
€2 Ninja gaiden. It's called Shadow Warrior in europe. It was in a rental box, but for €2 you can't really complain about that. The game itself is in really nice condition.
€5 Gremlins 2. Really cool game. I played it a bit and so far I enjoyed it. The 3d environment is kind of refreshing after having played so many platformers.

SNES:
€5 Pilotwings. Price is about right I guess. Got it from the same reseller I got Gremlins 2 from.

PS2:
€1,50 Dead or Alive 2. I did not have any fighting games for the ps2 and for €1,50 you can't really pass on a game like this.

Gamecube:
€10 Controller. My other GC controller was worn down. The thumbstick did not have texture on it anymore and the rubber started to come off.

Wii:
€10 Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I played this game at launchdate over at a friends. The controls are a bit laggy and the AI is not very smart, but that might just be the difficulty settings. I never owned a game from the smash bros series, so I am glad I finally got it for a reasonable price in box, with manual. It even has the little nintendo star points card with the code unscratched. I think I am gonna leave it that way.

PC:
€2 Half Life 2. I'm probably gonna give this to my yougner brother. He is more into FPS than I am.
€1 2 x 512Mb DDR2 ram. For repairs and upgrades.
€1 Enterprise grade keyboard. Not sure if mechanical. It's nice and clicky. Always wanted one of these. The keys are still a little bit heavy. Still: just €1 for a keyboard is not a bad deal in any way. This one still has all the letters visible on it whereas my previous one did not. I also like that this is a wired keyboard. My wireless one ran out of batteries at the worst moments.

And I almost bought a TI83+ for €1, but a woman just got there 5 seconds earlier and she got the deal :P I also saw a sega kids gear (newer model gamegear) It missed both battery covers so I passed on it at first, but then when I decided to get it anyway it was sold already. Whoever it was: He caught me slipping on something. There was a €25 GBA SP backlit model. It was pink and it had stickers and sticker residue on it. I really wanted a backlit SP, but that is way overpriced, so I passed on it.

Too bad you missed that 83+ :p SSBB is awesome, you should try and get a hold of Melee (GC) too. Such fond time playing that and DoA :D It seems like you've got a great deal overall, nice list.

Wow I paid like $30 for Ninja Gaiden x.x

As for a GBA SP I think over here they were like $30 too but they might have gone up because they're very rare. The original GBA is $10.

At this rate I am never gonna be able to play all of my ps2 games. I bought so many of them in such a short timespan that I never got to playing all of them. They are just so friggin cheap these days even complete in box. I also saw Final fantasy X for €10, but sadly I ran out of cash, so I did not get it.

As I said: Now is the time to stack up on PS2 games since nobody seems to care about them. Prices for wii games are dropping too, but they are still about €10-€15 on flea markets. I bet that is gonna come down as more and more people are going to switch to wiiU.

@Eiyeron, I just visit the big ones in cities. People always have some games and computer hardware there. There will also be resellers with a stack of games at either market value or overpriced. They don't have a lot of good games since collectors have been picking out the good ones. They are left with sports games and mediocre games. I managed to get gremlins 2 and pilotwings. People don't seem to realize that those are actually great games.

@DJ O That happens. It was in a rental box, so people might not have spotted it. The seller did not know what he had either. He said he had more nes games, but he sold them already. I arrived at 10.30 and the event started at 9. Probably locals. Those darn locals always get the good stuff :P

Yeah I have the same problem with SNES/NES games, although most of them are arcade based, so they are generally short and next to impossible to finish anyway.

And yeah PS games dropped since people buy them on PSN now. I bet that certain titles might become collectibles anyway, though, so in 10 years PS2 games might become expensive again.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Keoni29 on August 17, 2013, 12:25:26 pm
Yeah. All of my ps2 games I bought for less than €2 each. All complete in box. I bet they are already worth more than what I payed for them. A good investment for the future. I might get some doubles now that they are cheap.

Back from the fleamarket in town. I spent €15. This is what I got:

€7  - Metroid prime 3 Corruption (wii) + Animal Crossing Wild World (DS)
€3  - Original gameboy with very little scratches + Speedy Gonzales (GB)
€1  - Midway arcade treasures (PS2)
€2  - Kingdom hearts (PS2)

Also some non gaming stuff:
€1 Scart switch box
€1 Usb fan for keeping me cool while coding :D

Yeah I guess there is a bit of luck involved, but it's like this every flea market I go to, so perhaps I am just good at making deals/spotting games I dunno.

Actually over here, almost every Mario game are $20 or higher, no matter if it's for the NES, N64 or even Wii. I think the only ones that are lower are SMB1+DH, SMB+DH+WCTM, SMB2 and the three SNES educational games. Even the Mario sports games are hard to get under $20. Zelda is usually $40 or higher except the two gold NES cartridges.

By the way, look what I just found for $15 at the game store after work. I wonder if that thing ever got used, because it's almost like new! O.O

First day at college today. We had a little bit of an introduction talk thing at the beginning of the day and the next class was 4 hours later, so a friend of mine and I went to GameMania to search for some nice used games. He got a copy of final fight for the ps3 for €9 and I got:
Metroid prime 3 for €5
Already bought that game yesterday, but I got it so I can give it to a friend. It was too cheap to not buy.

Mad World for €5
Not played it yet, but people say it's a hidden gem. It's kind of like the hunger games, but with big men with chainsaw arms.

Guilty Gear X2 €7
It's awesome it's awesome it's awesome it's awesome. I need to get a classic controller now. It does not play super well with the wiimote.

That makes me wish that I picked up one of the Guilty Gear XX Core Plus at Dollarama for the PS2 last year. I came back a day later after checking reviews online (since over here, when a semi recent non-sports game is $2 it's very suspicious) and all copies were gone. It was $2 like every other PS2 game at Dollarama (all other games were Naked Brother Band, High School Musical and Little League Football).

The X-arcade tankstick has arcade-grade joysticks and buttons. It's built like a tank just like the arcade cabs from then 80-90's. You can buy little adapters for it so it can be used with multiple consoles. You could even try to make your own adapters.

http://www.xgaming.com/pages/adapters/

Adapters include ps1,2,3 , wii, gamecube, wiiU (that one is new :D), dreamcast, xbox, xbox360 and dreamcast. There are even adapters for android and iOS devices!

It's not real sanwa though, but you can mod it with a set of sanwa buttons and joysticks if you're really picky. I might eventually build my own arcade joystick with a set of sanwa buttons and a microcontroller.

I tend to avoid third-party gamepads and joysticks at all cost, though, because they always stop working within one month of use. This has happened with every third-party SNES and PS1 gamepad I got, regardless of the brand.

Well the snes arcade sticks I got for €2,50 are not the best but they are the only arcade-ish stuff I got and they were too cheap to pass on.

This is all of the stuff I had to store away in my closet because I did not have space to put it on display. My dad brought in these super old and ugly brown shelves. It's perfect for retro games. It has its charm.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 10, 2013, 03:22:46 pm
Yeah in my case plenty of retro games are located in a storage bin, while almost all the Xbox 360, Wii and Wii U games are hidden in a drawer. My collection just grew to insane proportions over the last 12 years. I guess it's good that many games are in-demand classics, since one day, if me and my bro ever gave up completely on gaming or something, we could possibly get a decent amount of money from those games.

On a side note, I just got another Sega Genesis gamepad (3 buttons, though), F-Zero Maximum Velocity for the GBA and After Burner for the Sega Master System.

The 6 button is for fighting games mainly. Otherwise Streetfighter and Mortal Kombat are a PITA to play (from what I've heard).
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 16, 2013, 06:07:32 pm
Ah I see. I assume that the 6 button gamepad came out later, right, and that older fighting games will work fine with the other gamepad?

Also someone tried to beat Sonic with an Atari joystick once. :P (since we can plug Atari controllers into a sega console or vice-versa)
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: TIfanx1999 on September 16, 2013, 06:11:01 pm
Yea, the six button one came out later. In Street fighter II if you have the 3 button controller a,b, and c are your punches. You have to hit start to switich between punches and kicks... x.x In Mortal Kombat start was originally used for block(on the 3 button controller) I think it's different on the 6 button.

Good find. Too bad about the broken case, though. Also on Ebay be careful about stock photos. Sometimes people just re-use photos from previous sellers. This happened to me when I bought Solaris brand new for the Atari 2600, although in my case it was for the best: The picture clearly showed damage on the side of the box (it was crushed), but finally, the one I got wasn't crushed and instead just had a little hole through the plastic seal. Still, it shows that pics aren't always accurate.

I just got a Star Fox 64 copy earlier today btw. It had the big box and manual, but missed the Rumble pak and the cartridge insert. At first I was trying to choose between Tetrisphere and Pokémon Stadium, but then I saw Star Fox 64. Pokémon Stadium was cheap, but I am not that much into RPGs where all you can do is fighting, with no ability to explore dungeons and stuff.

They also had Kirby and Starcraft on the 64 (the latter which was boxed and re-sealed, but I don't know if it had the manual), but they were kinda expensive ($39.99 and $129.99 respectively, although SC64 boxed is ultra mega rare)

Awesome! There is a new pawnshop in the city and I just came back from it. Some of their stuff was a tad expensive, but there were some really nice games there that not many people know of at a decent price. I am gonna get solar jetman for €5 tomorrow. I did not bring my wallet, so I could not buy anything today sadly.

Be warned that Solar Jetman is pretty difficult. It's pretty neat though because of all the gravity. Different planet that you explore have different gravity. This also can make navigating your space ship a huge pita though.

Yeah it totally skyrocketed recently. However, the standalone Windwaker GC version has normal prices. It's just the ones that had the extra Ocarina of Time/Master Quest disc or package that are in the hundreds of dollars. I think the one with the extra disc was available at Walmart.

I also noticed that the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess is more expensive nowadays too compared to the Wii version. It was probably made in much smaller quantities since it was released near the end of the Game Cube life. Same goes for the Zelda Collection disc that had Zelda 1, 2 and Ocarina of time/Master Quest, but this one seems to fluctuate a lot (it was about $70, then suddenly went for $30 then $50 again within one year). I'm so glad that my bro didn't sell them lol.

On another note I just went to EBGames and I just got Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition for the PS3 for $14, Avatar The Last Airbender for the Xbox for $1.50, Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology for PSP ($10) and Untold Legends Dark Kingdom for PS3 ($9).

Lol even consoles are kinda all over the place, although not as much. The main issue is that some of them are on the floor (Wii, Wii U, SMS, Genesis, Atari 2600 and NES) due to lack of space on my current furnitures, and most handhelds are in our bedrooms. Also all my boxed NES/SNES/Atari/Sega Genesis/Master System/64/GBA games were kept separate from the rest (yes, I really have boxed Atari 2600 games, one of which was even sealed when I got it a few months ago).

What I hate the most, though, is how Nintendo 64 games have no label on the top of cartridges, so if you store them in some storage case, for example, you can't see what game you're picking. >.<

Oh wait I forgot that PAL and Japanese SNES cartridge labels didn't go over the top of the cart. I don't understand why they used a different design in North America, but although it doesn't look as great, I am glad that they made it easy to find loose games and used a plastic that doesn't yellow as much as PAL/Jap games.

I went to La Planque Jeux Vidéos a few times and literally every imported carts is beige or yellow >.<. Barely any USA cart will yellow and when they do it's usually the back part. In my collection, this only happened to two of my games (Final Fantasy III and Secret of Evermore). Our SNES'es, on the other hand, often have the same problem as your cartridges.

EDIT: Just got Orphen PS2.

Ok so due to some requests, here is my game collection so far. Sorry for the bad quality. Note that some of those games are owned by my bro (such as the many Yu-gi-oh and Dragon Ball Z games):

There is also a Disgaea (the 4th I think), Madden 13 (PSVita) and Sonic Chaos game (Game Gear) lurking around somewhere else and that the Guitar Hero 4 kit I have is going away soon. The transparent box above the boxed N64 games is Super Mario Kart. I also had a Secret of Mana manual somewhere but it got lost D:.

And yes, I really have two Solaris and F-Zero games. Just one of the Solaris game is PAL instead of NTSC and one F-Zero game is factory sealed.

Indeed. If I was allowed to do it in any kind of appartment and if I was located in a more visible area, I could almost have started my own store. However, half of the games would be RPGs and to be profitable enough, I would not be able to sell games at JJGames prices (so no $3 Jim Power/Aero the Acrobat). :P

Yeah I think that was one of the first handheld to finally have a wide variety of game genres. For example, on the GB/GBC there were barely any racing game, barely any RPG, etc. I guess the GBA might have gotten more due to the many SNES ports, though (eg Breath of Fire, FF, Tales of Phantasia).

I really hated the overly dark screen, though. The GBA SP fixed that, but the battery bill was insane.

By the way, I feel bad for people who bought Marvel vs Capcom 2 for PS2 a few years ago in hopes that its value would continue skyrocketing :P

http://videogames.pricecharting.com/game/playstation-2/marvel-vs-capcom-2#completed-auctions

It used to go for $200 most of the times years ago, but then it suddenly dropped around $30-40.

Note that this happened to several PS1/PS2/PSP games a while back, but not as drastically. It's because those games are now available for download on PSN.

Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: willrandship on November 18, 2013, 02:34:05 pm
The best way is with the memory card exploit, Free McBoot. Technically a software modification, but it requires homebrew of some other kind first, like a swap disc.

Then, install ESR, and burn games after patching them. It makes the games pretend to be DVD Videos, so the system doesn't reject them. Then, the ESR loader loads them as a game. With Free McBoot installed, it will automatically launch burned DVDs the same way it normally launches games.

You can also use a swap disk. I got one of those. I have never tried it though.
I didn't even know they existed for PS1/PS2 consoles. The only ones that I know off are the Wii one that lets you play PAL games and the Action Replay for game cube.

I have seen one for the wii, but I did not pick it up. I want to have original games in my collection. Those pressed disks are better quality than burned ones anyway.

Meh. Wii modding is quite easy. I'm using it to back up my discs nad get a copy for my sister when I take the game away (most of the times for playing with my brother. I've a splitted/separated/divorced without marriage nor charges family.)

Yeah, Wiis are damn easy to hack.

Also, my bro got me Gran Turismo 2 at the flea market yesterday. I should try those PS1 hacks now that I have a valid game disk.

Wizards and Warriors III NES
Phantasy Star Universe PS2
Beauty and the Beast Sega Genesis

Since it's Black Friday, there was a 2 for the price of 1 deal on used games. There were some restrictions on retro stuff, but not those games it seems. Basically, if the seller originally bought the games for higher than the 2 for 1 rebate (such as on Ebay), then the rebate didn't apply. I couldn't find anything else decent and cheap to go with Wizards and Warriors 3, though, so I only got Phantasy Star Universe for free.

I saw Duck Tales PS3 the other day, but I got told that it's a download code, so I'll spare my bandwidth and wait for a CD version.

Does anyone know if Ys IV: Memories of Celceta's North American release is a limited run or something? Because yesterday, I noticed it just came out recently and EB Games (Gamestop) told me that they only got about three copies. I picked the last one (it was $39.99 since it's for PS Vita). In NA it's published by XSeed, the same company that published Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii, which was a Gamestop exclusive that had a limited run as well. Apparently, there are two editions, so I can only assume that the silver edition is incredibly hard to find. >.<

That said, I was happy to see it out, since I have been waiting for quite a while.

I just bought the following:

Rambo (NES): I was surprised at how fun it was considering it's a movie-based game. It's an action platformer with RPG elements (experience/level up) and multiple weapons with ammo. However, it was a bit confusing at first. I got it for $3.

Slalom (NES): Skiing game. Not as fun, but since there was a 2 for the price of 1 sale I got it for $3 like Rambo (both games were originally $5.99)

Persona 4 (PS2): Got it brand new for $30. I didn't know it was available for PS2.

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (3DS): I got this one last week at Target for $15 during some game sale.

Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak (original): I thought I would have to pay $39.99 for it but finally got it for $25. I had it reserved for a month because they're rare and they finally got one.

Btw is it me or Hyperdimension Neptunia is quite expensive? They had it for a long while (the Europe version, although the PS3 is region-free so it still works) at Microplay and it's still $39.99 used. The 2nd one is $49.99 new. ???

I got the prequel to Mario and Luigi dream team: Mario & Luigi partners in time for the nintendo ds recently. I played it for a bit and I finally got past the wiggler boss. Before I owned it I played it on my R4 cart. I usually just use it to try out games. DS games are pretty cheap these days and I was happy to pick up a complete copy for €15.

Yeah I got that one as well a while ago and the Browser Inside Story one. I still need to find Superstar Saga for the GBA. Partners in time was very rare as well so I got it for like $25-30 IIRC. But again, it's nowhere as bad as Pokémon Heartgold which is $100 with the pokéwalker included (I thankfully got it in a bargain bin for $20 last year). >.<

The 7th Saga (SNES). It was kinda expensive at $35 but it seems on-par with Ebay prices (including shipping).

I really need to grab a copy of Journey to Silius, Donkey Kong Country 2 and BattleToards & Double Dragon (SNES) before prices become ridiculous.

I once got Street Fighter 2 Special Champions Edition + Mortal Kombat 2 for the Genesis online at roughly 5$ (boxes, manuals and all). My best investment to date.

I also got Ecco The Dolphin around that time, but I paid a little bit more for it. I'm still looking for Ecco 2 if anyone knows where I can get it at a decent price.

I got DK COuntry in the box for 40€. Expensive but worth it! We were three to try to finish it, I never played retro games with my family before.

I definitely need to find Bravely Default.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 12, 2014, 03:40:24 pm
Indeed. That reminds me, I wonder how much a complet DKC copy costs over here nowadays? I got DKC3 with the box but no manual for $30 last Spring and it was in pretty good condition, but DKC always seemed more expensive.

Now I just found a copy of DK64 finally. :D
I also got Ecco The Dolphin around that time, but I paid a little bit more for it. I'm still looking for Ecco 2 if anyone knows where I can get it at a decent price.

If you have a car, try Jean-Talon flea market. Going there with public transit is a major PITA because you walk for 25 minutes at the end of your trip, but I found about 5 retro game stands, in one of which I found a boxed copy of Ecco 2 (although the manual was missing). Don't expect much deals, since they know their stuff, but sometimes you might be lucky. For example, I found Mega Man 2 for $20 and Cybernator for $7 once. The best deals are apparently from sellers who aren't specialized in games, since they usually have no clue about how much old games can cost, but then it's much harder to spot games.

Else, you might have to rely on the retro game stores in the area, like La Planque, Rétro-Révo, Microplay (I think only the Lévis store sells retro games, tho), Free Game, etc. I would avoid Dédé and Play-N-Trade, though, because most stuff is absolutely overpriced and the clerk will try to pressure you into buying stuff (although Dédé has the largest collection and can make you some deals if you buy $200 worth of stuff).
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Lunar Fire on January 12, 2014, 04:28:36 pm
I have been to most of those places but they usually try to sell it for a much higher price than it's worth. I usually look online because that's where I can get the best deals (even if sometimes I have to pass on one because of shipping price).

And if I can't get a game at a reasonable price, I usually don't buy the game, relying on emulation instead, at least until I find a deal that suits me. I'm not a huge fan of retro gaming, I just the nostalgic feel of playing a game like Sonic 2 or Ecco on actual hardware. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat make great party games, because usually no one in the room is too good with those games to have a definitive advantage over the others.

I also forgot to say that one of my friends got a copy of Fatal Fury from one of his friends, who basically gave it away to him. I don't think he knows how much money he could have made selling it to a retro game store or on EBay.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 12, 2014, 04:34:59 pm
Yeah it depends. La Planque and Microplay usually have some deals, especially the former on PS1 games, but SNES/Sega Genesis games are usually slightly higher than Ebay prices (although from what I noticed, it's usually $10 higher max and with shipping costs on Ebay the price in the end is pretty much the same. I did see some bad stuff like $150 for Xenoblade, though (when you can get it for $60 on Ebay) or Star Fox for $59.99 (complete), although it's usually nowhere as insane as Dédé (where everything is $20 higher). Don't get me started on Instant Comptant. I think they charge $39.99 for Super Mario World O.O.

Loose. Normally loose at the time I saw the $40 copy, it was supposed to cost between $25 and 30 and when you buy a SNES a free or cheap copy usually comes with it. But again it's not as bad as Zellers charging $59.99 for it in 1997, when SMAS was $39.99, but again in 1997 the canadian dollar was worth $0.65 US dollars and Final Fantasy III was $149.99.

Oo FFIII JP in the box cost 60€ here!
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 13, 2014, 08:22:17 pm
Actually to be fair, $149.99 was brand new, since at that time Zellers didn't sell used games (it's a department store like Walmart but only 3 Zellers store are remaining now), so today it would probably be $20000 or something, but it was still expensive for a game even in Canadian dollars. Normally, a recent SNES game not made by Nintendo nor Rare was $89.99-99.99, the sports games usually being the most expensive. This was pretty much $59.99-$69.99 in US dollars back in the days.

Actually most opened copies costed around $70 on Ebay two years ago, but now it seems to have dropped in price (usually $40), unlike the Windwaker+Oot bonus discs combos.

The English (North American) version of Pokemon Heartgold (2010 Nintendo DS remake of Pokemon Gold) is also ridiculous. Most opened copies on Ebay are now $100, even without the Pokewalker. The French version sold in Quebec and France is much cheaper, tho ($40 brand new sealed, even with the Pokewalker). On the other hand, for Zelda A link to the past, it's the French NTSC version that is more expensive (since it was only sold in Quebec)

I can't imagine how hard it is to play games that used to be played with a d-pad on a touchscreen. I bought Secret of Mana for the iPod Touch a few years ago during the short time I actually used that device and I regret it just for that reason. It's barely impossible to control your character properly. Notice how most HP Prime games use the d-pad too.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Siapran on February 15, 2014, 07:19:19 pm
actually N64 games aren't that bad on the M64 emulator since the D-pad is octagonal and pretty well designed
those C buttons though...
oh and did I mention I mapped my volume keys as Z and L triggers? (else Z-targeting would be simply impossible)
in the end, the configuration I had made it playable enough (although I had a really hard time aiming at anything with the bow/hookshot, but then again, most of the gameplay revolves around Z-targeting)

Pay more than the average price (over $10 by offer end): Civilization V, Civilization V: Gods and Kings expansion, [added after one week: 2 Civlization V DLC, Sid Meier's Pirates!]
Pay $15 or more: Civilization V: Brave New World expansion

Plus, The award-winning Civilization IV Theme song, Baba Yetu, and the full Civilization V soundtrack.

My favorite gamepads are the GameCube controller and the Dualshock 3 (PS3). The N64 pad looks pretty weird to me with it's trident shape and since the d-pad is barely used it must be weird to hold in the middle.
Also I map the C buttons to the right stick too. It just sounds logical.

Yes because analog stick I know. And NES had a d-pad, SNES had shoulder buttons, GC had analog triggers, Wiimote is motion based and the Wii U pad has a touch screen. If you ask me Nintendo look like they spent more time working on the controller than the hardware past the GameCube. :P

I don't see how an analog stick is revolutionary when Atari did it 14 years before the N64 came out :P (Atari 5200), but I guess bringing joysticks back was a good thing that Nintendo did.

I myself don't like the GC controller much because some buttons seemed placed weirdly and were akward to reach when I tried playing Windwaker. I prefered the N64 style, except how it seemed to be designed for three hands. Same for the original XBox gamepad. I prefer the 360 ones because the white and black buttons were moved as L-R buttons like on PS controllers.

Well I definitely HATE all the Xbox pads but it's just my opinion. I find them bulky, heavy and uncomfortable to hold.
Also even though the ps3 pad's layout is more conventional, it's awkward to play GC games on an emu with it due to this. On the cube you can easily press three buttons at once too.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Keoni29 on February 25, 2014, 08:42:35 am

Nice, Sunsoft really had some great stuff back then. Funfact: Journey to Sillius was originally meant to be a game based on The Terminator Movie. However, Sunsoft's license ran out during the making of the game. Some graphics and story (and obviously the title) were changed as a result.

Just picked up the original  Japanese Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow for $36.50. :)

*Edit* Worth mentioning: I also saw a Sega Genesis clone at Wal-mart for $30. It has 60 games built in and 2 hard-wired controllers. However, it also has a cartridge slot. Thinking about getting one. :D
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 19, 2014, 03:13:00 am
Yeah I remember they lost the license. It sucked because it would have been an amazing movie based game, something that is very rare.

Also nice about the Sega Genesis clone. I didn't realize that Walmart started selling retro-related consoles and accessories, although I heard that they are gonna accept trade-ins soon (although I bet it will be like Gamestop and they won't accept retro games).

Also I might not buy as many new games in the near future, because new games are now launched at $69.99 instead of $59.99 in Canada, thanks to the CAD dollar now being worth $0.90 USD >.<. I seriously hope that the dollar won't start falling back to 90's values, because look at how much games costed in Canada back in the days O.O

I even saw a GOLF game for $99.98 once *.*

Don't wonder why most kids just rented games instead of buying them.

Even Sega CD and Playstation 1 games were ridiculous at first despite being CD medium. I remember all of them were $80 (or even $90 for Sega CD games) before they finally started dropping to $60 in 1999 or so. PS2 and Gamecube games did the same thing.

And to think that EA wants to charge $69.99 USD for PS4 games at launch. This means we'll pay $79.99 here or more >.<

Also the fact it was more expensive producing games on cartridges back then, hence the massive switch to CD-based supports around when the Nintendo 64 came out. Nintendo was pretty much one of the last to abandon cartridges in favor to CDs for non-portable consoles after a failed partnership with Sony who went on to produce the PlayStation, first of the name.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.

Indeed, but back then, even some CD-based games were more expensive than today. Most Sega CD sports games were about $70 in USA. The $60 standard arrived around the Sega Saturn days.

That said, even today there are games that are more expensive than normal, excluding limited edition gimmicks. Shin Megami Tensei IV for the DS, for example, was $50 on launch, while all other 3DS games launched at $40.

EDIT: By the way, earlier this afternoon I got Metal Gear and Gotcha for the NES, along with Bravely Default for the 3DS.

YEah that is why I am relunctant about buying certain older systems sometimes, especially the Atari consoles, because most no longer come with the cables. I even saw a video game store over here trying to sell a Sega Master System with missing cables. That can suck if a parent is buying that thing as a gift.

Nice stuff there! My attention was drawn to the Amiga, the gameboy player (gamecube),life force, and what appears to be a yellow N64 controller cable. Also, can't really tell what the joystick is for. The end kind of looks like an nes controller plug, but i suspect it is for something else. It's hard to tell from that view. I'm think I might get an Amiga someday myself. :D

I managed to get the supercom pro1 copy box working. I hooked it up to my XP machine and I played some roms on it. It cannot play some of the newer Hi-rom games and sadly A Link to the Past cannot save its game data. Other games can save though. I installed a new battery because the old one had been removed by the previous owner. There is still a lot of acid on the pcb which I had to take care of.

I played: Contra III, Castlevania IV, Super Turican, Super Punchout. These games all work fine.

That is nice :D, too bad it can't play all games, though.

As for myself, I recently got Double Dragon V and Star Trek Next Generation for the SNES, along with Drakenguard for the PS2. The first was a big mistake, because it happened to be the worst DD game ever x.x. Instead of a beat-em-up platformer, it's just a 1v1 fight game. I didn't try Star Trek yet, though, but considering it costed half of what a box+cart (no manual) copy costs on Ebay, I guess it's fine.

Yeah I prefer the other Double Dragon games personally. You can move around and sometimes even jump, while defeating hordes of easier enemies. I don't like fighting games as much because even in easy mode every opponent are like bosses so they're nearly impossible to beat.

On so-called kingsday our country basically becomes one large flea market. I picked up some nice stuff for a very low price.
- €0.20 Some vintage pokemon figurines
- €0.50 Pirate cartridge for gameboy
- €0.50 Pokemon gold
- €2 Death Note manga
- €1 Little 3d Printed makerbot logo (some kids had a 3d printer set up in front of their house and they were selling little plastic models)
- €6 Portable dvd player with battery. It has AV in, so I can use it as a little lcd tv.
- €2 Old air brush. Not sure if it works.
- €20 Nvidia gtx260 graphics card
- €0.50 Some random connectors

Did not find anything super interesting, but it was a good haul nonetheless :)

Nice. I myself went to a small flea market Sunday afternoon but it was the last out of two days and it was closing in 3 hours, so most of the good stuff was most likely gone by then (I wasn't available on Saturday). I found Sacred 2 Fallen Angel for $5 (Xbox 360), though, which was probably the oldest console game available there (although they had plenty of common 90's computer games).

What? Bypassing the resion makes the pal games slower? Oo
I know that PLA games are already slower than NTSC (60->50Hz, and goddamn Sonic's OST in slow-mo is unacceptable) , but slowing them again... unless I misunderstood what you meant.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Streetwalrus on May 21, 2014, 09:03:45 am
What I meant is that pal games run slower than the NTSC ones and unless you install a freq switch it will slow down NTSC ones if you just use an adapter.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 23, 2014, 12:12:22 am
Yeah it's because PAL games run at 50 Hz while NTSC games run at 60. This is why PAL versions had to be slowed down. When you try a PAL game in NTSC mode in an emulator, the sound is actually pitched up and the game is too fast.

However, even in normal mode, PAL games sometimes play differently than their NTSC counterpart due to not being ported properly. For example, SMB1 music is faster.

Yeah the thing is that on a SNES, this was the only way to display 3D graphics with this much details at a decent speed. If they would have used real 3D there would have been no textures, frame rate would be much slower and they would have needed extra chips.

Ok, now I officially understand why people didn't like Super Mario Sunshine. Although I didn't really have much issues with jumping/walking, the inverted camera controls (that you can't change in options) are extremely annoying and I thought they left that to the Xbox. Also the game feels pretty different it seems (even more than SMB2USA), plus that Dark Mario chase at the beginning when he kidnaps Peach was ridiculously hard. It took me like 10 minutes before I finally manage to stop him. >.<

Another issue is that the cutscenes at the start where the guy explains some controls were ridiculously long >.<
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Streetwalrus on May 28, 2014, 01:39:54 am
Yeah the GAME is really hard and you can't skip cutscenes so it's annoying if you already saw them. :/ Besides that, I find it pretty fun.

I think SMS give to Mario his best jump movesets.

And that's the only first chase...
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 28, 2014, 01:43:16 am
That said, not being able to skip cutscenes is very common in role playing games and older games, but at least in non RPGs they were generally pretty short, unlike in Sunshine. As for the difficulty the first stage looked much easier than the dark mario chase just before, but there's a lot of exploring to figure out what to do involved, which seems to make the game slow-paced.

They /are/ epic, but insaaaaaaaaanely hard. Also the first Dark Mario chase was medium difficulty IMO.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 28, 2014, 12:18:43 pm
Yeah the issue with the first Dark Mario chase is the inverted camera controls. With how much turning around there is during the chase, trying to rotate the camera only to end up rotating it in the wrong direction is incredibly frustrating and I almost gave up on the game at that moment. Plus until you manage to successfully throw water while still walking it's pretty much like you were constantly walking on ice when you are about to catch the bad guy.

I also noticed in the first stage that walking around is kinda slippery too, even when not on that paint goo, and hitting enemies can be a little hard. It's really a game that tests your accuracy skills. >.<
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Streetwalrus on May 28, 2014, 12:21:36 pm
I did not move the camera in this stage.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 28, 2014, 12:30:30 pm
I kinda had no choice to keep some control on it because it sometimes moved to weird angles or didn't automatically rotate fast enough and it got hard to see where I was going >.<.

That said I heard the game had many bugs so maybe I just ran into some. Plus, the Gamecube gamepad is kinda weird, especially the LR and Z buttons. >.< (But at least it doesn't require 30 cm large hands like the Wii U or original Xbox gamepad or three hands like the Nintendo 64 gamepad))

So now I managed to find a copy of Shin Megami Tensei IV 3DS for $29.99 new (was $54.99). That game is so ridiculously expensive lol (even used it's normally $39.99 despite being released a long while ago). I have to wonder if RPG publishers won't start trying to grab extra cash from their niche of users now that they know that their usual limited print runs will sell for $100 on Ebay in a few years? I doubt it's just because of the Canadian dollar no longer being on-part with US, because other 3DS games still launch at $44.99, not $54.99 (SMTIV used to be $49.99 for both the standard and limited edition but the standard reprint is $5 higher)

Thanks. Also, today I did the opposite: I got rid of certain games I no longer really want to use since I never got into them or did not plan to use them much: Assassin's Creed 1/2/Brotherhood (Future Shop bundle), Pokémon Heartgold French (with an unused Pokéwalker), Chrono Trigger DS, Mass Effect Trilogy and Magix Music Maker PS2. It was via the retro game store, though, since I didn't feel like waiting weeks until they sell on Ebay, plus the store gives twice more credits than other stores for most games.

I didn't keep Chrono Trigger DS because I didn't plan to play it much since I already own the PS1 version since a decade. Same for Mass Effect trilogy. I only bought them because they were ridiculously cheap and I actually ended up making a bit of money by selling them back :P. As for Pokémon I never got into the older style games and I would probably prefer the 3D ones, but I got the game for dirt cheap too so it didn't matter much, and I never got into Assassin's creed and juju's bro already had those games. As for Magix Music Maker I just gave it to his bro but the game sucks compared to MTV Music Generator so yeah :P

On the other hand, I got a nice copy of Kirby Super Star for the SNES with both the box/manual included. It was expensive due to its condition but it was like $20 cheaper than on Ebay.ca so I picked it anyway and it's like one of the best SNES game ever. :D

Mmmh, thinking about it, it's the only thing I want to take selfies with it. I think, IMHO, selfies are very egocentric and narcissic. I like the dithering pattern from the GBC and how it gives a very good nostalgia factor (also LOLCAT).

Now I have to find a way to dump the pictures.

You don't install games on the c64, you just load them to RAM. And disk drives are the fastest way to do that.

You know what's slow? Loading programs onto a computer via cassette tape. 30 minutes to load up a game.

Lol I've heard of that for the ZX Spectrum. People use mp3 players now and it's much faster as far as I understood.
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: Keoni29 on July 06, 2014, 06:52:32 am
The mp3 method is also more reliable. My MSX home computer only has a casette drive for input, so I play TAP files directly on my pc soundcard. It takes just as long as with casettes. I could get a cartridge that allows me to hook up CF cards though. I have one battery backed up ram cartridge for the MSX, but I think it does not work with my version of basic.

No it does not because the c64 datasette digitizes the sound internally.

Nice :D. I should check if my bro still has his GC box. I know I still have my PS2 box and many manuals, although most inserts and stuff are scattered through my home. I also have a Nintendo 64 box that came with my 2nd SNES 14 years ago, so I should check if it's the Atomic Green one since the N64 I got a few years after is Atomic Green.

I also got Wipeout Pulse for the PSP.

As long as there are existing ISPs where you are moving to. >.< I mean, if in United States and to a lesser extent Canada there are cities that are stuck with dial-up (I am serious), imagine how bad it is in certain countries that just recently became or are about to become first world nations.

But again, when it comes to USA, we are talking about a country that has the city of Detroit in it.

Ah ok I thought it had been for only like 20-30 years like China and stuff. However, since it's fairly recent, I was worried since USA is a first world country since centuries, yet some areas can't even have working street lights, let alone high-speed internet.

Also, new game pickups for today!

-Space Football SNES (boxed): was cheap and looked somewhat interesting to try
-Bomberman 64 The Second Attack: Got it for $59.99, which isn't bad considering it sells for over $90 on Ebay.
-Mario is Missing NES: Crappy game, but I had been looking for the NES version for a long while since it's quite rare.

Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.

Yeah true. Also I noticed that certain of those countries that were developed more recently tend to have developed at a much more rapid rate due to technology available elsewhere, and they skipped over the outdated technology. However, in certain countries like China, this aggressive economic stimulation was done at the expense of human rights. I'M glad this is not the case in Israel, though, although I am not familiar with Singapore other than for 84+ RAM Clears. :P

Also for my birthday I appear to have gotten Mario Kart Wii :D (not the Wii U game but I'll probably pick a copy in the near future anyway).

Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.

True. The only issue is online was shut down and you need to use a private server now IIRC, which is most likely not as popular as the official one (especially now that MK8 is out)

I don,t get why they shut down old servers when the official servers of Starcraft Original, Starcraft BroodWar and Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition are still running after 15 years.

Mario Kart Super Circuit (manual+box but misses box tray)

Tales of Vesperia (Xbox 360. I think it's the only Xbox Tales game)
Murasama (PSVita)
Title: Re: Your best video game pickups.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 24, 2014, 02:21:49 pm
And now I got:

Bayonetta (PS3)
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful World - Black label (Gamecube)
Muramasa (Wii)
Lost in Shadow (Wii)

Bayonetta was free since it was a 3 for 2 promotion. I got Muramasa elsewhere.

Also I saw a copy of Shadowrun for the SNES for $59.99, but even though it's very rare I didn't buy it because I'm not a big fan of tactical RPGs

By the way, don't ever bother about Odin Sphere for PS2. It's garbage IMHO. If you like plaftorm-based action RPGs you're better off getting Muramasa. In Odin Sphere, all you do is talk to people in a castle, then  when selecting a stage on the map, all you can do is battle enemies. There's absolutely zero exploration you can do in this game, while in Muramasa you at least wander accross maps (albeit a bit repetitive) and grab some items or stuff, while randomly encountering enemies.

EDIT: After some store trade-ins I managed to grab An American Tail: Fievel Goes West for the SNES and Wild Arms 2 for the PS1. However I think my old SNES is wearing out because most scaled sprites no longer display properly, same for top-down view mode 7 effects. It might just be dirty connector but every game with such effect seem to do that now. In general, most games are still functional.

Look at what I scored today for $39.99 at Value Village:

The SNES power input jack and cable are worn out, but if you don't mess around with them, the SNES works very well. Plus it came with 2 controllers and 3 Mario games :hyper:

The guy at a local store told me a way to fix the SNES power jack above. If that works then it will probably be useable on a regular basis without fears of accidental unplugging :D

I have another SNES with 4 gamepads (two from my RetroDuo) but it doesn't play some mode 7 scaled sprites properly sometimes and the cartridge slot is dirty. Plus it's yellow lol.

Also today I got Robocop 1 and 2 for the NES in their box, Taz Mania SNES (boxed as well) and James BOnd Jr. The latter is missing the instructions. I also got a loose copy of some Sega Genesis Disney platformer thing. All were at Ebay prices except Robocop 2 on which I got $30 off.

it's supposedly quite good per Sonic 2006 standards, among the best of the post-Sonic Adventures material. Reviews were more favorable towards the DS version, though.

I just got Sega Rally Championship for Sega Saturn in good condition. Now I need to find a Sega Saturn, though <_<

Also I noticed that Free Game charges $29.99 for Phantasy Star Universe PS2. I got it for $2.99 at Gamestop during their March 2009 economic-crisis-sale where almost every game was like 90% off. If I can manage to get it exchanged for another $29.99 game at Free Game I'll be happy :P

So yesterday, my copy of FIFA 14 for the Playstation 2 has arrived.

Unlike PES 2014, this PS2 game came out in North America, but the cover and manual are in Spanish (although the game has English, French and Spanish language options).

I don't normally buy sports games, but, a few things motivated me to do so:
-It's the last PS2 game ever released in North America
-It came out over half a year after the PS2 got discontinued
-The NTSC version was made in very small quantities, due to soccer not being as popular as in Europe and the PS2 being old.

Of course I'll probably play it a bit since I sometimes play hockey games as well, but the possibility that this becomes an holy grail of game collectors in a few years is why I picked the PS2 version over the PS3 or PS4 (not that I have a PS4 anyway). It will most likely depend of how many people become aware that this game exists, though, because most retailers stopped carrying PS2 games half a decade ago and I doubt many people would expect a game to be released on three generations of consoles at once. But yeah, just look at the NTSC versions of FIFA Soccer 2013 Wii, Madden 09 for Xbox. :P

I got a SNES this week, it came with Striker and SMW. It was very dirty and the center pin of the RF switch broke off and was stuck in the RF port but with some pliers I could pull it out. After cleaning and inserting the carts a few times (and trying to figure out the frequency for the RF switch) I got it to work, now it works flawlessly :D
My SNES game collection is now:
Micro Machines, F-Zero, Super Mario World, and Striker.
I have quite a few games :P

-Super Challenge Football Atari 2600 (boxed)
-Marble Madness + Klax GBA (complete)
-Zaxxon 3D Master System
-Jungle Book Genesis
-Lotus II Genesis (Boxed)

And now I got a factory sealed copy of Dokapop Kingdom PS2 for $40 (so basically $22), which is like $55 on Ebay.ca. Now to open it or to not open it :P (maybe if it drops in value on Ebay?). I traded-in several games, though (although the credit for 4 of the 5 games was actually higher than what I originally paid, especially Phantasy Star Universe which I had gotten for $2.99 at Gamestop in 2009)

Also, just to tell how terrible GameStop is, Halo was not even listed until this morning on EB Games website, even though it came out Tuesday. And before Tuesday there was absolutely no ad nor any mention of the game anywhere on their site.
