The school finally blocked Omnimaga D:
Stupid xtech.boss.net :P
-
*coughproxycough*
-
No proxies work now..
Also, https, and http://www.omnimaga.or doesn't work either
-
Omnimaga's been blocked at my school as far as I can remember (for "games," even though no other calculator forum is blocked) :/
-
It says its a blacklist -_-
-
Proxy still works at my school thank god O.O
-
Oh no! My school recently blocked a lot of webpages, but I have not checked if Omni is blocked! D:
-
They tried to do a sweep of all of the forums here at SciTech, but somehow Omni survived.
-
Omnimaga is unblocked at our school.
Sparknotes has been blocked under "educational website" though :P
Most schools have you automatically run through a proxy (made and hosted at your school)
You can try this.
1. go here and install to flashdrive http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
2. open firefox portable and go into settings.
3. change the setting to no proxy (default is network default or something)
4. try at school :D
*you may have to rename FF portable to calc.exe or keyb or such
-
Or use liberkey which is about >9000x faster
[/ad]
..
[/speaking from experience :P]
So ssl doesn't work for you? 0.o Iirc there's some add-ins for both firefox and chrome that let you use proxies, there's almost always something open ;)
-
I have a friend who is a computer guru, and he just redirects the schools wifi to his house then runs it through his server, which is unblocked. its a tad slow because technically the info is shot from school to his house, then sent back...sorta...thats the easiest way to explain what he does...sorta lol
But my schools tech's aren't exactly the smartest of people :P It isn't hard to get though the blocks and stuff :) actually the teachers usually ask the people like me to help them get to, like, youtube
-
Too bad... I go to a STEM school, so the IT people are actual computer technicians, thus they know how to monitor your shit.
-
lol, youtube. that is so what my teachers go to when they get a bypass. (sarcasm)

Noooooo, was my first reaction.
They haven't blocked Omnimaga at my school, namely because I'm the only one in my school actively using it, nor have they blocked ticalc, unitedti or cemetech either (phew)
I recommend Tor/Vidalia Bundle if things go out of hand. It comes with Portable Firefox in the Browser Bundle version too!
http://www.omnimaga.or is what? It doesn't work and is blocked at my school!
-
Ping omnimaga's ip then type it in the url box I use a proxy otherwise
-
they havent blocked any of the calc sites at my school either, but i also am the only one using them.
anything they do block i can eaysily get around tho...

+1 For TOR. I've used tor before and I read somewhere that your signals are completely encrypted until they reach their target, which may even be a computer in Germany or somewhere! There it's decrypted and the response is encrypted and sent then decrypted by you.... blah....blah.....blah....and so on. You get the idea. Secure, Large, Discreet. Profit!
-
They have it blocked at my school.
-
It's blocked at my school too... But i use Google Translate, and it works just fine. Can no one else do that?

Google translate doesn't work either.
-
That sucks.
At my school it's weird, of course they block porn, but they don't even block 4chan and such.
-
omni is blocked at my school too. :(
-
Yeah, at my school google trans and google's cached page thingy are blocked as security risks :P
-
One idea would be to enable the word filter for guests and censor bad words and pron to some slightly similar but distinguishable alternatives and let the users, for the sake of free speech, disable the bad word filter if they wish via their profile settings. That could possibly prevent the site from being blocked at too many place.
I don't like Google Translate, though, because you can't login when using it.
Anyway I noticed the site gets blocked more and more anywhere, which kinda sucks (kinda like when we were on Invisionfree). Maybe that is why our activity dropped so much over the last year? (especially during daytime, where sometimes it's completely deserted)
-
I'm guessing it's inactive during the day because many of the people here are school-age, so they're in classes?
If it was more active before...idk 0.o Maybe the people-in-school:people-out-of-school ratio is higher than it used to be.
-
Nah the last two years actually 60% of our activity was during school breaks and dinner time or morning. Remember how we had like 250 posts at 4 PM eastern time, then during evening sometimes we only got like 60-70 like now. Now at 4 PM sometimes there aren't even 50 posts...
One other thing though is that a lot of european members like Ephan went less active. Omni was probably not known as much and discovered much later by those who make school filters. Or it might be due to our lack of word filters, which causes us to be blocked, since Cemetech isn't blocked.
-

here is the funny thing... they had youtube blocked for about a year, and then they unlocked it
-
When I graduated from hi school in 2002-03, they blocked zip files. We could download exe files, though.
-
To get on youtube all we type in is https:// instead of http://. Works every time.
-
thats generaly how we get on facebook
-
That's really not hard for admins to stop. It's already fixed at our school, since they can just remove the http: part of the block and have it behave as a wildcard.
-
Really the only thing we can do is use proxies. Sadly we cannot provide a list of proxies here publicly or even in a private matters, because they could fall under bad hands. Of course if any member got a proxy link to give to a trusted member privately we tolerate it, but otherwise we prefer not sharing lists publicly.
-
Wow there have been a whole page or so of replies since I posted.
I did say that Tor/Vidalia is an alternative to finding proxies. It allows you to connect to the network by other users relaying the network to you. :)
-
This is saint, at school, on omnimaga, via proxy, with it being blocked :) I'd give out my proxy stuff but unless you are near my house it would be too slow for all of you :P
Also apparently my blog is blocked too.....and it is categorized as 'Adult' O.o
-
That sucks.
At my school it's weird, of course they block porn, but they don't even block 4chan and such.
they dont block pron but blocks newgrounds.com and facebook :P and if a site has ssl you can do the https trick :P
-
It's really weird what kind of things school filters choose to block. Their really is no standard from what i've seen and sometimes sites are blocked without reason. Other times sites that should be blocked are not. It's really quite strange.
-
By the way, for those who can't access Omni at school, under which category is it blocked?
-
At my school the categories are discussion forum and games. Cemetech and UTI aren't blocked, however, nor are various game sites.
-
Actually I think Cemetech's case might be helped by the fact that the main page is not directly a forum software page, unlike Omni's, and they have fewer mentions of "games" on the front page.
-
I'd guess many of them are blocked as "games". I didn't think about Omni being blocked because it's a forum though, but I guess it makes sense.
-
Yeah, the thing is that schools probably do not see forums as useful at all for school work, and more of a nuisance (like cellphone texting) because people will spend their entire classes posting there.
-
Both Omni and RFG are blocked as "games." Ticalc, TI-Planet, Cemetech, UTI and TIBD (and that's just some of them) aren't :P
-
You guys can try http://omnimaga.netham45.org, but you won't be able to log in or post. come to think of it, you won't be able to do much anything, heh.
-
I hate ur school. :P
Only the IRC doesn't work in out school, but its because of Internet Explorer.
-
I did mention this several times before, but if it becomes hard or annoying to keep finding new proxies (most likely because they are getting blocked), there's always Tor https://www.torproject.org/
If you can, just put it on your USB (it's fully portable) and set the network settings to your school's ones and it should work! You can get it with portable Firefox which is even better and enjoy unrestricted browsing!
If anyone decides to try this, tell me, as there are some extra settings I might need to tell you about.
-
Our school thinks this website is "gaming & social media"
-
Keoni, it is. We have an arcade, and the forums provide "social media"-type functions ;)
-
Yea, this is true actually. :o
-
I tried at my school on Monday. Omnimaga is blocked. But as far as I know, nobody has used it! But it's not that bad, because Google login pages are blocked, yet I'm still logged in... so I can probably bypass it. But really, what harm can Omnimaga do?!
-
Theyve had ticalc blocked at my school for ages. Reason: known to have viruses
-
I just noted that the websites metatag contains several references to gaming.
Maybe this causes the software to add it to a blacklist.
-
is there a way to make a alternate address for omni?
-
Yeah the meta data has game-related stuff in it. I wonder if removing them could actually hurt our traffic, though? As for an alternate address I doubt this would work, since they would most likely block the entire IP.
