That was me (Zerg) vs Cooliojazz (Protoss) the other day. I was out of minerals except one small spot (I am still learning the ropes after all, like Cooliojazz is doing :P), and I feared I would get attacked soon. All I could build fast were zerglings. Since their upgrades were maxed out I thought that it could maybe work. Finally the attack on me happened, carriers arrived and I just said to myself "well, no choice, sending what I have (about 300 zerglings) is all I can do. I am screwed anyway."

I did those kind of stuff in SC1. I called them infinite zerglings. Very useful indeed when all you got is minerals and lots of hatcheries :)

In SC1 it wasn't as efficient, though, when going through cannons or high defense, because you could only select 12 units at once and put 12 per groups, meaning only about 120 zerglings could be moved at quick speed. On top of that in SC1 they often ran one after each others in queue, so it often took ages before they all get out of the base.

I've never played StarCraft before, but that was obviously epic!

yeah, true, but what I usually did was to name each group and press ctrl+1, 'A' (for attack) click minimap, ctrl+2, 'A', click minimap, and so on until I did it for the group 'zeroth' which means 120 zerglings.
And I kept producing zerglings from like 10 hatcheries and sent them right to the base
unless they had massive lurker defense, I finished them

I usually just click the hatchery and press s and then z.
I memorized pretty much all the hotkeys :P I was addicted to starcraft back when I was still in 5th grade

yeah I always found this to be quite slow though, altough that might be because I tend to have a lot of hatcheries when I have several bases (or am playing on a money map. On the later I can have like 40)

(I found this SC2 map once with its own ai and the enemy had about 750 units: the best from each of all three races, but it just sat in the middle until I attacked it. so I spent about an hour skirting around the map gathering ALL the resources, setting up a massive nydus network and cover the place with creep tumors for fast travel. Then i started spitting out all the corrupters i could afford with my vespene to take out all the air. took several batches)

enter the lings:

then i put all my hatcheries spitting out zerglings as fast as possible with rally points to the nyduses. it took good 5 minutes to unload them all (!), but they MURDERED the ai. sadly, the replay crashed when i tried to watch it! oh well

Sounds massive. The gathering part was tedious, maybe. But should have worth.

One thing that speed things up a lot in SC2 is how you can select like 400 units at once. IN SC1 you can only select 12. Good luck sending 400 zerglings on an enemy when they're in the middle of your base among larvas

That is so true. And happens in lots of RTS games.

In RON (Rise of Nations) there was a limit on the number of selected units but to overcome you could set a quick key to access an army and other to another so it was as fast as sending as a whole. You could even add short cuts to certain positions on the map like your base and crossed paths.

The major issue in SC is how units block other units between buildings so you need to carefully select the right ones to open the path for others to pass
