It depends how your parents are and how comfortable you are with working with your hands. But I have fixed similar problems in 3 laptops by taking them apart and using an air compressor on the grate. (just be gentle :))

I wonder why TI didn't make the Nspire be recognized as a jumpdrive...

The reason why everything I made between 2001 and 2004 was released in 2003-04 online is because I couldn't find any computer where my link cable worked at all. Most gave me a "Cannot open the COM port" error. I got told to check if a modem or another software was conflicting and there was nothing. Other computers just wouldn't detect my calc. I tried with TI-Graph Link as well.

I miss Windows 98. At least on Windows 98 there weren't as many linking issues with calcs.

Or... Just buy a can of air and blow through the vents where the heat sink grating (or fins) are located. I bet you will see a plume of dust come out. I do this about every 6 months on my laptop... and it always runs cooler afterword.

Cheap and easy trick. Worth a shot.

For a more thorough cleaning, you may have to take the laptop apart as thepenguin77 suggested; but I don't think that is absolutely necessary.

If it still turns on, and shuts off, then either little or no damage has been done yet. A cleaning really could help, but it might also be some other reason why it's overheating. The random shutoffs are made to occur before damage does.

I am sad prince happybobjr's computer is having issues. Problems include:
* battery
* overheating
* dust
* virus
I would say dust or overheating is your problem.

We cleaned out the computer.
We lowered the temerature of the cpu by 30 degrees (while idle for nefore and after)

Unfortunatly the graphic card is stil having serious issues with heat.
So now i am off to play some intense games to see if it will overheat it too much to use.

Low activity will probably last about 2 weeks now.

I will upload a pic sometime.
There was so much dust.....

edit again:  Graphic card temp went from 65 to 80 while inactive after about 10 min.

The bad part is if the heat caused permanent damages. If it doesn't overheat, you may be fine. Anyway I'm glad that you might be able to get back on again regularly in 2 weeks. I was a bit worried your parents would wait about 1-2 years to get a new computer. X.x (I remember when Silver Shadow had no computer for half a year once)

we cleaned about 20 more pounds of dust out of the graphics card....
The computer now lasts 60-90 min.  although it is still in bad shape.

One fan basically couldn't turn because there was too much dust. I am surprised it broke down this late...
