Agreed.... @chockosta What version of Ubuntu is that? Looks like 9.10 (my favorite one) but if its 11.10, how did you get it to look like that?

Sigh. The latest version of Ubuntu has Unity interface by default, but you can change it. Never associate a distribution with its default interface, but with its default applications, package manager, etc.

I am an Ubuntu user and I use Awesome WM, which is an advanced window manager, configurable with Lua, and I love it. Just because I use Ubuntu, I don't have to use Unity.

Install Ubuntu and choose another interface:
- KDE;
- xfce;
- Gnome Shell;
- dwm;
- Awesome WM;
- xmonad;
- i3;
- Enlightement;
- Pantheon;
- etc.

How do I choose another interface? I used to use Ubuntu for 3 years a while back until 2009 when I got a new computer. I don't know how to navigate the interface anymore...

OK.

In the login screen you will see a gear next to your name. Click on it and select the desktop environment you want. GNOME is GNOME3/ GNOME shell, and GNOME classic is pretty much like GNOME 2. You can install more Desktop Environments with terminal:

XCFE:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

LXDE:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

KDE:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Hope that helps!

EDIT:
If your a real geek, get the awesome DE:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install awesome

No, I didnt make it myself, but I did do the apple logo :)

I set the desktop to show no icons and then used the folder view screenlet to get a KDE plasma-like desktop.
