erf, that sucks :( (but at least you know ...)

(Also, is there a particular reason for not having a proper dedicated server from a hosting company ? For example, TI-Planet uses Online)

I think Omni currently uses a VPS, but IIRC dedicated servers are much more expensive (around $50-$300 a month last time I checked). Omni just moved from a $80 a month hosting to a $25 one to make it easier to sustain costs.

As for the postponed downtime from last time, they probably were too busy playing Minecraft and said "oh screw it" :P

Yeah, dedicated servers cost a lot, a VPS is pretty enough for us.

VPS is easier to manage, plus cheaper. If I was really concerned about downtime like this, I could have a couple servers (One on each of their centres) and mirror across each. This way we wouldn't have to worry about this downtime, but again, cost.

On a semi off-topic note, I wonder on what type of hosting Calc.org ran back in the days (during their 2002 server move disaster)?

Hm, another downtime :(

But don't you *at least* get your money back with that provider?

This is scheduled downtime. No provider gives money back for scheduled downtime.

Also I seriously doubt that even for an unscheduled downtime that a provider would give back money unless you asked them, unless it lasted more than 3-4 hours or so. I'm betting that if someone's site goes offline for 10 minutes at 5 AM and no one notices (by visiting the site or via any logs), the company will most likely not bother, since they are all there to make money. Unless Ubiquity is more honest than usual.

SLA requires them to if it's unscheduled and not emergency. Ubiquityhosting is very good about honouring their SLA.

Quite nice actually and I noticed that whenever the site was unreachable it usually lasted 1 minute max and was kinda rare.

The only major problem we encountered so far I think is the compatibility issue with the negative topic/post IDs (what seems to cause the postcount and topic sorting to be messed up). Everything else only required some minor fixes, if any.

Well that is because SMF was not designed to have negative topic/post ID's. It's always been a problem, it's just not been as apparent until we moved to a new database and SMF is starting to complain more.

Yeah true. I was a bit surprised that one server would support it while the other wouldn't, though. I can't imagine how bad it would be if someone switched computers and had to spend hours tweaking Windows to get his 1-4 years old games (that meets both computers' recommended CPU/RAM/video card settings) to work properly, just because each computer's Windows install was configured slightly differently. >.<
