can it be possible without arduino? i.e. by just plugging a speaker to the right pins...

It is possible, but mp3 might not be legal (even if I code it myself).

ogg format is free and similar, might be a perfect alternative ;)

:w00t: that's real gaming world then xp and those machines are called what? calculators? as soon as ndless comes out, my npsire will be more gb then calc and will be called dixie, to the small donkey kong monkey, i used to love that game :) quite appropriate

I don't know why mp3 would be illegal. There shouldn't be any problem using that format.
