As you may have noticed, we have a new subforum in the Gaming Discussion board: Minecraft Discussion. Here, you may post anything related to Mojang's wildly successful game, Minecraft. You can find a list of some servers here.

This subforum is subject to normal site rules and will be moderated as such. Additionally, both karma and post count are affected by posts herein.

If there are any bugs/glitches, or missed topics, please feel free to notify one of the admins by posting either here or to this topic.

Enjoy!

TI-Nspire / Re: Nspire Java
« on: August 18, 2012, 01:06:53 am »
First off, I'm not trying to discourage you. Please don't take it that way :)

A JVM is a VERY difficult task. Even porting one is insanely complicated unless you're extremely comfortable with your language of choice.

Secondly, the Nspire does indeed support Jazelle, last I heard. Jazelle is not a complete hardware JVM though. It is a partial hardware implementation of some of the easier opcodes. It also supports vector tables for the opcodes it's missing, IIRC. The issue is that it's badly documented from what others have mentioned. You may want to check into it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Also, the JVM is itself one of the most complicated pieces of software you will ever have the chance to modify. Understanding the architecture is no mean feat by itself.

TL;DR: Read the Sun spec. I don't care if it's not relevant. Read it. Read "Inside the Java Virtual Machine" as well. Also, spend a few weeks reading through all the ARM documentation on the Nspire's processor (can't remember the precise model number). Also, good luck and take your time. It will be like drinking from a firehose for the first few weeks.

:)

Ephan's name was changed to "Munchor" for unspecified reasons (i.e.: he asked me without telling me why) . His post count may or may not have been set to >9000 in retaliation :P

General Calculator Help / Re: Game Dev Process
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:20:24 am »
Personally, it depends a lot of the language I'm using. But I come up with a general idea first and storyboard it if possible. If the idea still sounds good at that point, I figure out how it could be implemented and what the major technical issues would be. This step generally involves me bugging some people on IRC and bouncing the idea off them. Afterwards, I'll get to work making a prototype as quickly as possible to test game elements. It's often just a hacked together piece of junk with all sorts of bugs, but it's short and easy to work with. Eventually I decide how to entire game will play out and start on the actual game. I try to get critical gameplay elements built first (map loading, displaying sprites, collision detection, etc) first in order of importance. But debugging these can get tedious, so when I want to work on the project without being bored, I'll fill in the less important stuff like intros and such. When I'm done, I'll put the game aside for a few days. Then I start playing it constantly as the user would see it, taking note of how UI elements could be made easier to use and other aesthetic things, fixing any bugs I find along the way. At the end of this, it's out of major development, so I'll release it, sometimes with a dev beta to collect feedback.

It's an animation showing the connection between the logistic map and the Mandelbrot plot.

Computer Programming / Re: c# pointers help needed
« on: August 04, 2012, 09:18:49 am »
A string is nothing more than an array of chars, at least in C++. No reason it's not the same for C#

Just to note, I believe I've heard it somewhere that each program has it's own memory space for pointers, so an address in one program wouldn't equal the address in another. So you might not be able to easily access the memory of an external program like that. But, then again I'm not 100% sure.

C# is not a language in the same family as C/C++. It's much closer to Java than any compiled language. The name is just confusing in that respect.

As for whether you can use pointers, generally you can. The most common form of "pointer" in C# is what's called a "reference." It's basically meaningless obfuscation to call it that, but you can think of them as effectively pointers with some associated metadata for the interpreter.

@Homer, you should NEVER be accessing another program's memory space, so virtual memory isn't an issue. Besides, physical pointers in modern computers are far more complex to deal with than virtual pointers. Either way, use the interface the other code exposes. It is the best way to interact with other code.

Okay, I figured out what was happening. Turns out there are two issues. One: greasemonkey goes full retard on omni's v4 theme and starts modifying the images that are displayed while they're being retrieved. This ends up leaving the page source different from what's actually rendered. The other issue is that there appears to be a bug in the theme itself. http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/Omnimaga4old/images/maintab_back.gif isn't the proper background image that it should be.

This is total WTFery. On a related note, firefox's 3D HTML tool is incredibly useful for dealing with these kinds of problems.

General Discussion / Re: Learning to write music
« on: July 30, 2012, 01:03:47 am »
What Squidgetx is talking about is a field called music theory. If you want to get more involved in it, there's a tremendous amount of literature on the subject available at libraries and online. Here's a more in-depth introduction to it http://www.whitakerblackall.com/blog/music-theory-for-beginners/

Now, here's some advice that I'm going to ask that you ignore until you fully understand what I mean with it:
Music is an art and so is its composition. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to compose music. Music exists to say something. Learning the theory will not allow you to make "music," it will allow you to make pleasant arrangements of sound, as well as analyze and understand the detailed structure of compositions by others. The theory teaches you how to express yourself, it is not a creative force in and of itself.

Good luck with your studies. This is an interesting field.

Other / Re: OUYA - The Future of Console Gaming

Also note that games are tied to the store and can ONLY be sold through there. As far as I can tell, this is basically Steam with a dedicated, cheap, console and fewer games.

LaTeX is a text markup language a bit like HTML that's used to format documents.
