Miscellaneous / Re: How did you find Omnimaga?
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:07:30 pm »
I literally just stumbled across Omnimaga multiple times whenever I had questions I needed to answer about programming. That was while I was taking my first steps to programming on the Ti-84. I then thought about joining the forums, and when I did it felt awkward at first, it was my first real forum, and actually still is ( XD ). But I quickly fit in, and boom here I am now. Had a bit of inactivity beginning 2014, but I bounced back.

EDIT: Actually Ben_g's story is pretty much exactly the same as mine. Like to the last little detail too.  O.O

Hm that's strange... OpenJDK7? Do you have the latest Java run time? I believe I made it so you need 7 or higher...

The movement is completely temporary for the ships, it's just proof of concept that you can select and tell them where to go.
(Select is left mouse button, direct/send unit is right mouse button. To clear selection click on empty space)

Or have it limited to a required number of posts? Isn't that how the IRC works? It's 40 right?

Yeah to pan use the mouse and move to edges of screen, it is an RTS after all. I will pit in use for the arrow keys in a bit too. probably the next build because it's really easy. It's actually already set up too XD . I'm just having a weird bug where when I set stars with x values of 1000 and 2000 with different colored textures in each, I set those stars to a list. Well when I run through the list with a foreach loop (modified for loop) both of the stars images can be independently drawn from the stars, but the x value for the first star is overwritten by the second star, thus they all have a value of 1000 instead of both 1000 and 2000. It's very irritating and I can't figure out what is wrong with it.

EDIT: Nvm fixed thanks to ben_g. It was a stupid user error on my part. I guess programming techniques from c# don't cross over to Java as well as I thought...

Actually I was thinking like a message sent to your inbox when someone mentions your name in any post. That way If people were talking about me like what was said below, I could actually Know about it instead of randomly stumbling across it XD.

Granted it would have to be optional, cause not everybody wants an inbox full of mentions....

Well it's because most small programs include the resources in the packaged jar file. I was lazy and left mine outside of it for now. Don't worry I will make it a single Jar later. That way you can run it anyway even inside a zip. I'm going to add solar system generation, that includes asteroid belts, planets, stuff like that. Then I'll upload the nightly and then go to bed sometime later.

I just got back from hanging out with my friend all day, she just did her pre-bowl and got a 255. That's 10 higher than her all time high. I feel really good right now because she said I emitted an aura of happiness.

EDIT: sorry no nightly I have some bugs to squish...

When I come home from my friends house today, I'll put in solar systems with the planets, asteroid belts and outer planets.

Yeah also when you guys run it, make sure you take the folder out of the zip...
Zips are technically files not folders so you can't just access them via directory like the way I am in java. So unless you for some reason have all of the Assets in your System 32, all you are going to see is green...

@DJ I know what you mean when you say Java isn't the most efficient language. In fact my brother and I are working on a custom 2D-3D engine in C++ with OpenGL as well. He just won't let me use it until he's done with his game though... Yeah and I have no intentions of make a Crysis 3 looking game, like ever. So no worries there. It makes Java very good for indie dev.

Well that's not quite what I meant with the stars but yeah XD. I do forget commonly that this is a site for CALCs ;D . oops. I wasn't talking about rendering. Rendering 10000 stars at once would just be plain stupid. You wouldn't even get 1 fps. I don't render stars off screen and de-load those that are too far.

I was talking about the RAM usage of that many objects at once. 512 Mb (less than, system and other progs take RAM too) doesn't cut it when it's on this scale. I just can't fit all the necessary stuff in that allotment. BTW 10,000 stars is an exaggeration, its really more like 200, I just have a lot of objects floating and moving at one time. All the objects together can make 10,000 though. Been there done that.

Re-writing the post due my crappy internet. Um yeah the A in the title is made by a ship flying in... also, Jar files can be ran natively on Mac as well, you just have to use the console, or set them to run via JRE when you double click. As for Linux, uh I'll figure it out? If I figure out how I will include a launch program OS specific and/or instructions. But until then I can only give you guys the pre-builds via JAR or .EXE. Sorry about that.

Nightly build

You know, sometimes I go through here just to think to myself, "What the hell am I reading?" :w00t:

Yeah, Well they aren't restrictions to the store, it's restrictions to what you can use like different languages and different libraries. For a lot of things you have to use what you are given which are usually terribly optimized and then I end up hard coding everything by scratch. Which I don't mind cause I actually prefer that. Even still, computer programming is more open on how you can make things. Another restriction I was referring to is the capabilities of the device you are programming on. While specs on the PsVita still beat xbox 360 and ps3 (er was it xbox and ps2?), it can only handle so much. Randomly generating 10,000 stars on it ended up being pretty much impossible. It's not that I couldn't load which star was which when you got close, that I could do. It's just that it didn't have enough RAM to have everything open. With my sprites I could only have like 50 or so in the program... Otherwise I would run out of RAM and poof game crashes. Twas very restricted. But I guess that's my fault for trying to make a FREE ROAM RTS on a mobile device. XD

Anyway I started a brand new topic here:

Also while I believe notch is a decent coder, his game Minecraft got famous because of the concept. He himself believes that he is not a very good coder, as I do myself. So not all games by Notch would be impressive. In fact Minecraft was the only one recognized, and it gained help. I like his other games like breaking the tower and minicraft, but one couldn't say they were impressive. Take 0x10c for example. Great looking game, awesome concept. Aaaaaaaand it flopped.

Don't get me wrong this isn't hate speech about him, I sincerely love the guy, and as an indie dev myself, take him to be my role model. His games just aren't exactly impressive.

Yeah and Flappy Bird. No, just no. Both his game and mine prove that the mobile community is only focused on extremely simple games. 2 million in ad revenue per day. Absurd.
