Gaming Discussion / Battlefield 3
« on: May 31, 2012, 11:46:21 pm »
Anyone here play battlefield 3? I got it last week just 3 days before the memorial day sale started :(

I'm not too good but I'm learning and don't know anyone with the game so I'd like someone to play it with. If you have it my username is ruler501 on origin add me and we can play sometime.
Also you can use this thread to discuss your stories of BF3.

The most interesting thing thats happened to me in BF3 is probably when I had a plane get hit by a missile and blow up barely 10 ft above my head as I ran away.

EDIT:fixed title to remove the randome ale at the end

Other / What should I do with this computer
« on: May 31, 2012, 09:58:46 pm »
My aunt gave me a new computer. It is a Pentium IV at 1.7ghz with 128mb RAM not sure what to do with it. It has a 37gb hard drive with 4gb used up by windows xp. before I saw the RAM I was thinking of running it with VNC so I could access my computer and files from wherever I was with internet, but then I went and looked at the RAM. Its disk drive is only for CD's says CD-ROM but I'm gonna try it with a CD-R in a bit to see if that would work. So what do you guys think I could do with this? I want something interesting/fun to do with it. I will be able to assure it continuous Internet(wired it seems to have two internet access ports according to windows as it shows two different network connection but I only see one on the back) access as of this weekend. It also came installed with Windows XP Proffesional.

CPU Pentium IV 1.7ghz
RAM 128mb
graphics rage 128 pro ultra gl agp (reports as 350mhz and 16 mb memory)
hard drive 37gb
OS Windows XP Professional

EDIT: Looking somemore this is the model of computer http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx240/en/ug/specs.htm

Miscellaneous / Legality of Game Port
« on: May 05, 2012, 12:18:23 am »
Terraria is kind of a 2d version of minecraft that was made in .NET. The source has since been decompiled and posted online. Would it be legal to make a C++/SDL version of the game using the source as a base. I wouldn't be using any of the content from it so that shouldn't be a worry. I would just be using the decompiled source code to make a new verion completely written by me.

I was wanting to do this because the developer has stated they are done developing for it and they refuse to release the source or make it work in wine/mono. I would like to make it work on all platforms I could if possible.

Other / Rasberry Pi Calculator
« on: April 19, 2012, 07:48:34 pm »
Would it be possible to make a calculator with a model b rasberry pi?

Iw as thinking you could have one usb port internally for internal storage with a microusb with a few gb of storage. You could make it easily removable so teachers could remove programs for standardized testing. If it was possible you could make the sdcard write protected so that the user couldnt store programs on it. The other usb port I'd run through to the outside for addon's. USB wireless card, more storage, and maybe some other things.

You could add a Keyboard like the nspire(easier to use though) so that you could program on it easily. It can't be a qwerty though because of testing rules. with the keyboard you'd also have some shortcut keys for math equations and a touchpad/clickpad.
You could have a reasonable resolution color lcd added on
The case would probably have to be custom to have things fit well
You'd also have to have a battery that could run the pi for a at least 24 hours(maybe add a charge port so it can easily be charged iif it isnt too long of a battery life)

The OS could be a custom linux distro or an offshoot of arch that is customized to work with the hardware and to have a good interface for the keyboard

What do you guys think? How much would you expect this to cost and how usable would it be? Could we have at least one version that is usable for testing?
I'd like a cost of under $100 if possible.

Math and Science / Math Community Quiz/Game
« on: April 13, 2012, 04:42:24 am »
I thought I might as well revive this thread as I know there are plenty of math people on here.

The Rules:

1) A asks a question, the rest will try to answer.
2) A must confirm which answer is correct.
3) Person (say B) with confirmed correct answer then asks the next question.
4) A can't win right after B
5) Repeat.
6) If person asking question doesn't login to confirm answers within 96 hrs of his question being posted, any one can ask a new question.
7) If no one can answer question within 96 hrs or can't get the right one, questioner can ask again.
8) Use personal knowledge to answer questions don't use the internet or teachers
9) If answer has been confirmed and the new questioner hasn't set a question in 96 hours, anyone can ask the new question.
10) You can ask questions on any aspect of mathematics
11)Calculators are allowed and encouraged :D

Lets start with an easy(kind of) one:
Show a proof that the NOR operator, variables, and parentheses can be used to construct any valid statement in sentential logic.

Other / Linux Distro Discussion
« on: April 08, 2012, 06:46:17 pm »
Since we started this in the Avatar thread I thought it might be good to make it here.(Not completely sure this is right place though, please move it if its not)

Basically this is a thread to discuss the various linux distributions.

I have used
Linux Mint 10-12 All gnome 32 and 64 bit
Linux Mint LMDE all xfce 32 and 64 bit
Arch 64 bit
Sabayon 8 xfce 64 bit which is my current primary OS on my laptop(my primary computer)
Ubuntu(for a very short time because i prefered mint) 11.04 beta and 10.10 both 32 bit with the standard DE
OpenSUSE(for just a while since it didnt recognize my wireless card on my desktop and I never tried it on my laptop)

I have found my favorite to be Sabayon XFCE so far. It allows me to get stuff from gentoo if I want really up to date and the binaries it has are also extremely up to date though it does not have a good gui package manager currently imo

Computer Usage and Setup Help / Windows Screen Borders
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:18:08 pm »
I'm not sure what this is called but what I want to do is make windows not display windows in non-fullscreen on the top 45(approximate) pixels and bottom 25 pixels(approximate)+whatever the size of the windows taskbar is so that I can use VBox seamless and have it look/work a lot nicer.

Also is there a way to have a program not appear in the taskbar. I'd like to do it by process or something like that because it would be started on startup and it would be annoying to have to set it up every time I turn on my comp. I know how to do it with devilspie in linux but not sure how to do it on windows.

Thanks in advance for any help

Computer Projects and Ideas / Cooperative Editing Plugin for Code::Blocks
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:22:34 pm »
Me and Homer-16 were working on a chat program of his. As we were working we both commented on how useful it would be to have a real-timecooperative editing plugin for Code::Blocks. I told him I would start this thread for working on the plugin. If anyone has any ideas or wants to help please post here. I have no experience with writing Code::Blocks plugins so I will have to figure out how to do that. The only thing I'd really like for this would to have it be cross platform so I and anyone else could use it on Windows/Linux/Mac/etc.

I installed mingw with Code::Blocks with this installer codeblocks-10.05mingw-setup.exe
I have also tried using mingw64 which works fine till I try to run the compiled program. AT which point it says it is missing a library called libgcc_s_sjilj-1.dll

Does anyone know how I can get gcc working so I can compile my programs on windows?

EDIT: I got mingw64 working by adding the lib folder to the path

I know many people here have a distro of linux dual-booted or as their primary OS. I have found the games on linux too be pretty good(and free :D). Do you guys play any games if so what?
Once I get on my comp I'll post mine

EDIT: Game list:
Wesnoth 1.8. It was the first real game i got on linux and it is amazing
Flight Gear: I got it recently and it is a great flight simulator though i wish they'd add in combat
Im also going to be trying to install Americas Army maybe steam will install it through wine. If not i can go with 2.5(I think that was the last linux version)

I have a few problems with games like how I only have integrated graphics on my laptop because of linux's current problems with hybrid graphics

Computer Usage and Setup Help / Hybrid Graphics Linux
« on: November 13, 2011, 11:17:42 pm »
I have a laptop with a Nvidia GT555M 2gb and and integrated card. my problem is that I can not disable the integrated card so ubuntu isn't using my good graphics card. Ive been reading about Hybrid-Graphics and tried ironhide and had it fail(issue reported here https://github.com/MrMEEE/ironhide/issues/170) I've tried to get acpi_call to work but the test script always reports that its not working. I do not have the necessary methods in the dsdt for the asus_switcheroo. Does anyone have any other ideas? I think if I can't get ironhide working soon ill test regular bumblebee.

I am running Linux Mint 11(Gnome) 64 bit running xfce as my primary DE
the processor with integrated graphics is a i7-2720Q at 2.2ghz

if i left out something that could help you help me just tell me and ill gladly tell you. Thanks in advance for any help

EDIT: When trying to edit xorg.conf to use the nvidia card it reports no devices. I've read that unless you deactivate the card through BIOS or hardware switch this will happen each time.

EDIT2: If I could get it running on Arch or PCLinuxOS that would be great also.

Miscellaneous / I'm Leaving(yet again)
« on: June 30, 2011, 09:11:59 am »
I'm leaving for Northern Tier today. I'll get back on July 11th. I'll probably be in sever withdrawal since there will be no electronics or internet or calculators :o. Northern Tier is a Boy Scout High Adventure Trip. A 50 to 130 mile canoing trip depending on the weather. It will be through the Minnesotan/Canadian Boundary waters where we have to carry the canoes and 60+ lb. supply bags from each lake to another. It'll hopefully be a lot of fun. When I get back my projects will be kicked into high gear(I already almost have all the editors set up for my one project)
