that reminds me, I am really curious when the next batch of beta-testing starts. I wonder if I,m gonna be selected then. I hope they don't choose people based on if they own all Blizzard games that can be registered on the site by their user, which means SC, WCIII, WCIIIe, Diablo II and all WoW expansions... I only got both WCIII, SC and WCII.

I'm kind of interested in it. I really didn't have much of an interest in StarCraft until a friend convinced me to try it. It was pretty fun, if only for the multiplayer value. I may check out the Protoss version of SC2 when it's released, since that's the only race I play.

My only concern is the system requirements. My PC is a bit... legacy. I only recently upgraded to 512 MB of RAM. :P

Ouch I doubt it will run it x.x, I heard it will have higher requirements than some alerady existing games, altough still much less than certain. Basically, I think a dual-core with 256 MB graphic card with Pixel shading support will run it.

I wonder if it supports Windows XP?

Damn. I didn't think the requirements were that steep. I'm only using a single-core Sempron processor. That's like AMD's version of the Celeron. :P

Surprisingly, I've managed some good performance out of this computer. Of course, I've also tweaked the hell out of it. I got Tomb Raider: Anniversary to run almost flawlessly on minimum settings. That's probably the most robust game I've installed.

As for compatibility - that's sometimes easy to overcome. When I was still using Windows 2000, there were a number of programs that claimed they were only designed to run under XP or newer. Sometimes, you can extract the setup files from the initial executable and install them that way. (some are packaged into installers that detect your OS version and don't proceed with the actual, archived installers inside of them) Boy, those were the days... I remember getting a few newer programs to work flawlessly on my system, despite the program having no official support for my OS.

I was actually thinking about downgrading to Windows NT 4. Perverse curiousity. :P

On my old PC, I could run some old games fine after changing my video card, but I still couldn't run games like Supreme Commander, since the video card still was too cheap. The issue is that the mobo had no PCI Express nor AGP slots, just regular PCI slots, meaning I was limited to old cards and RAM types.

I don't really need a hardcore PC for gaming, since I don't game that much, but I happened to have a spare load amount of money lately and bought something more powerful than what I planned to buy. Basically, Unreal Tournament 2004 runs at 91 FPS with everything maxed out including 1920x1080 res, and 70-79 when I turn my graphic card anti-aliasing to x2 (30-40 on extremly complex maps with transparent objects, tho). For Audiosurf I also play maxed out, while on my old computer, I got low framerate and glitchy graphics even at low settings x.x

Compatibility wise, do you just mean changing a .exe file into a .zip file then unzipping all? Or simply copying the CD files to your computer? When I torrented Unreal Tournament 2004 I did not even need to install anything. I just copied the files. Doesn't that cause registry problems, though?

Err, what I meant was that some installer packages are actually self-extracting archives. Inside of these archives are, ironically, other installer packages. If you extract them and run them, they usually install without verifying your OS version. The self-extracting installer is usually the part of the installer that includes the verification and such.

(you can extract them using 7-zip, WinRAR, etc. without changing the extension)

ooh ok, I see, because for some files, you can rename them to zips, like TI-Nspire calculator OSes, and they will contain stuff inside.

A friend of mine got it recently, and gets clobbered daily. ::) I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but he says it's a lot like the original, but with more units added and the 'lings can be rushed lots easier. He also says everyone gets air way too fast, but that might be just because he stinks. :P

Mhmm I hear a lot of comments saying it's good and a lot like the original. That's a good sign. I was worried they made it like WC3: way slower paced than WC2. I heard it was quite fast, so I will sure enjoy it when it comes out (or if I ever get allowed in a beta run).

Also it takes a long while to be good at the game. I myself played SC for years and still have a losing record on Battle.Net :(

It's probably because other people are also getting better at it too o.o So don't worry too much.

Yeah, I heard the game is pretty fast-paced, and watching the videos on youtube and stuff, they look epic! Although some stuff look a bit complicated x.x Usually, games that come out now are so complicated that sometimes it takes a while to get used to the control, especially shooting games or RPGs.

Well on SC 1 there are people with like 8000-2000-50 records. I recall some guy called Binoooo having such record. They often spend all day/night on that game x.x

Another thing I hope with sc2 is that it's not too hard to click units. One thing I have issues with at SC is trying to click larvas or moving drones, the later of which hinders me when it comes to splitting at the beginning.

Guess what I just found out... It's the worst news EVER!
Okay, after searching through Google (my best friend) and finding out that you can get a cracked version of Starcraft 2 beta, I immediately went for it. The speculated system specification said that minimum RAM is 512MB, and my computer exactly had 512MB (phew!). The Speed was good, my computer being 2.80GHz, and SC2 requiring around 1.5(?)GHz. So I was like, yes! My computer's not too old!
This Cracked version allows people to play SC2 singleplayer with AI. After 2 hours of hassling with installation and such, I finally got all the things I needed. I got to the launcher, downloaded Lost Temple map, set my race as Zerg, set Computer as random, and pressed launch.
Then, the computer screen went into a black screen, and I was waiting for the logo things to pop up, and so happy that I will finally be able to play starcraft 2! But what greeted me was an error message...

It said that I do not have a good enough graphics card. SC2 requires Something called Vertex Shader at least 2.0, and it seems like my computer don't have that supported. FAIL!
So, I can't play SC2 because my computer's crappy. (Well, I don't own this computer, this is like the house computer thing) We got this computer around 2003~2004. Really old -_-;;;
I guess I'll just have to wait until my college gives me my macbook (Yes, the college I'm going to gives me full scholarship, and a macbook)...
So the point is, my life sucks and if you don't want to end up like me, upgrade graphics card once in a while!
That's my bad news.

ouch sorry to hear jsj795. TO be fair, I had big doubts my old machine could do it either, though. I haven't tried yet but I'm certain it can't. It ran Half Life 2 at like 15 fps with low settings after all.

My new PC will most likely do it, though.

I thought about trying a cracked version but I'm worried of viruses that will get detected only one year later and then too late the damage is done.

Btw I got an hold on a beta SCII copy and it's friggin epic. I cannot play in Multiplayer since I have no CD-key but I downloaded a hack with AI scripts and a launcher to play in single player meelee mode. At maxed out settings 1920x1080 and got something around 30 FPS, both with and without recording. If I set the game at 1366x768 res, I get something close to 40-50 when not recording

Some hotkeys were changed and some units appeared, but I got in the game kinda fast since I played SC1 a lot.
