the perfect platformer
« on: November 05, 2010, 04:17:39 pm »
the thread title. describe it. what game would be the perfect platformer for you. what features would you see in it. what's the theme? do the tiles animate? what does the character look like? what do different tiles do? change your gravity? shatter into pieces? spit fire? Keys, locks, ladders and one-way blocks? describe the best platformer that could exist. go.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.
'Nuff said.

Spoiler For Projects:

My projects haven't been worked on in a while, so they're all on hiatus for the time being. I do hope to eventually return to them in some form or another...

Spoiler For Pokemon TI:
Axe port of Pokemon Red/Blue to the 83+/84+ family. On hold.

Spoiler For Nostalgia:
My big personal project, an original RPG about dimensional travel and a few heroes tasked with saving the world.
Coding-wise, on hold, but I am re-working the story.

Spoiler For Finale's Super Insane Tunnel Pack of Doom:
I will be combining Blur and Collision Course into a single gamepack. On hold.

Spoiler For Nostalgia Origins: Sky's Story:
Prequel to Nostalgia. On hold, especially while the story is re-worked.

That, Mario, or Mega-Man :)

But to describe one would be to hard for me. I don't play enough platformers really to know.

i'm not really looking for a game name. i mean if you had the opportunity to effortlessly build your ideal platformer, what features would it have? i'm pretty  much asking for ideas.

Super Metroid, but with features from later Metroids and not extremly easy like Super Metroid.

EDIT: I can't come up with ideas quick, so I gave a title as an example of what feature in a platformer I would like. You should have made this more clear in your topic title (to not give a title but rather features).

I would like to add something, though: Faster shooting than  in metroid SNES. 8 bullets a second instead of like 3. Maybe some lasers too.

you guys are missing the point. i mean if you had the opportunity to effortlessly build your ideal platformer, what features would it have? i don't want a game title. i'm really asking for ideas.

Ya, I know. I just couldn't think of anything. I'll try to for later though.

Something new or everything old, your choice.

Seems most calc games take the second option to me.

Btw, more questions: puzzle/platformer or action/platformer? or even crazier:
Spoiler For Spoiler:
rpg/platformer, rts/platformer?
My TI-94+SE is broken.  I used some flawed existential conditioning on it, and it crashed. :(

Spoiler For Securite:

A couple security flaws
Need a good backdoor short of reinstalling the OS
Completely immobilized and invalidated by Zstart. And rendered incompatible.
Spoiler For FFTATIA:

framework: mostly done
graphics engine: undergoing complete rewrite
still need character and enemy sprites!!! :P

i'm thinking either an action platformer or an adventure platformer.
action idea:
racing platformer where you try to get through the level through manipulation of gravity, speed, and channeling flames through your palms.

adventure idea:
much more relaxed. have one HUGE scrolling map in which you have to find items. at first some items are impossible to reach. but after gaining a couple items (like, i don't know, a boat to travel on water), you can get other items.

Kay. Sorry.
I don't play too many platformers, but I like simple ones, like the classic Mario games.
Some features I like are animated tiles (flowing water, drifting clouds, etc.), teleportation blocks, and power-ups. Power-ups that make you stronger or give you special attacks. Irregular physics like in Kirby (or Raylin's Gravity game) can be cool if done right. As for theme, I don't really care, as long as it isn't super corny or anything.

I think Jumpman is the perfect platform game for calcs. But... That is just my humble opinion. ;)

personally, i look for huge range of motion(so no castlevania XD), lots of neat gravity tricks and effects, multiple ways of beating enemies with varying effectiveness(megaman got this right), and loads of character sprites.

where you have to get keys to get to the bomb, keg and torch, so yu can break rocks to get to the gem, which you use to exit the level on the gem door :P

@shmibs: I <3 zelda 2 :3

Personally, I look for fun games with a difficulty level that varies between slightly easy and slightly hard. Mario definitely has this down. I'll admit that I'm a sucker for character abilities and CPU players (yoshi) to interact with, though.
