Alternative Way to Send Files to Nspire CX CAS?
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:40:06 pm »
Hi everyone, I recently did a fresh install of windows on my computer and re installed the Student software provided for my calculator.  While trying to activate it it asks me to connect my calculator.  I do this and then it tells me that my calculator was already used to activate a Student software program thing. D:  Does anyone know another way to transfer files to the Nspire CX CAS without the student software?  I've heard of TILP but I wasn't sure if it was compatible with the CX CAS.  I already emailed TI about it but they have not replied yet.

You can use the TI-Nspire Computer Link Software.
It doesn't need any license and it is lighter and faster than the student software (because designed only for transferring).

Maybe TiLP will work too but I really don't know about this one.
I own: 83+ ; 84+SE ; 76.fr ; CX CAS ; Prizm ; 84+CSE
Sorry if I answer with something that seems unrelated, English is not my primary language and I might not have understood well. Sorry if I make English mistakes too.

Sweet thanks.  Do you know if I can update the OS that way too?

Yes, both TINCLS (preferably version 3.2) and TILP II 1.16 / 1.17 beta can communicate with a CX (CAS) and, among other things, upgrade the OS.
Nowadays, these can be installed side by side, with some manual configuration.

TILP supports most things that TINC(L)S support; among other things, nested folders are missing, and OS 3.2 isn't supported well (TI changed the protocols again without documenting, as usual) - but many people don't care about that defective OS version (yet).

Yeah sadly the Student software licence is a one-time license. Once you format your computer or get a new one, you're screwed. That's how greedy Texas Instruments can be.

Otherwise there is TiLP. I don't know if TiLP can update the OS, but the computer software can.

That said, provided one doesn't do it more than several times, it's possible to call TI-Cares ("TI-DOESNT-CARE" :D) to explain the problem, and they provide new license keys :)

I can't believe that!  Thats terrible.  Who doesn't format their drive every once in a while? TI really doesn't care.  Thanks for the info though.  I'll check it out tomorrow since I need to sleep now.  Oh and does TiLP II work on windows?  I can dual boot a linux distro if I have to but I don't really want to if I don't have to.

Thanks. :)

We wouldn't suggest it and write "these [TINC(L)S and TILP" can be installed side by side" otherwise ;)

It's only Windows that has a problem with multiple drivers for the same piece of hardware, and requires ugly workarounds. MacOS X doesn't, Linux doesn't, the BSDs don't :)

[EDIT: fix a typo.]

Sorry about that.  I was really tired and I'll try it out when I get home.

Yeah, that happened to me too when I got a new computer. And TI would not give a new license.
“Luckily” for me I later ripped the battery cord when I was trying to take it out, so I bought a new nspire and thus new software.

I got TI to send me a new key so I guess they still do.
