we cleaned about 20 more pounds of dust out of the graphics card....
The computer now lasts 60-90 min.  although it is still in bad shape.

One fan basically couldn't turn because there was too much dust. I am surprised it broke down this late...

Assuming your problem is with a desktop PC and if you feel comfortable with a little modification...

You can buy a 12 volt fan at your local Radio Shack. Hook it up to the yellow (+12v) and a black (ground), then attach it to the place where the original fan was located -- remove the old fan first. If it doesn't fit perfectly, just attach it with a hot glue gun.

Another cheap trick to try.

i recently had a similar problem with my laptop, it would heat up to the point of running terribly slow for apparently no reason.  We cleaned it up and it runs about 50 degrees cooler :) All laptops seem to have this issue.... Glad you managed to help fix it though :D Another thing i find helps is to prop your laptop up a bit on the sides to give it more room underneath for ventilation, that can help a struggling computer.

It's good to avoid using a laptop in the bed for that reason. The holes to let the heat go out gets obstructed easily in there.
