The Wii has the same CPU/GPU architecture as the GC, clocked higher. It also adds a more advanced coprocessor for I/O, and hardware for Bluetooth, USB, and SD cards, but was otherwise essentially the same.

Actually Nintendo didn't need to upgrade the Wii much when it was coming out because of the following things:

-Most games for the Wii were aimed at a younger audience and such game generally requires less power than FPSes, for example, since they look a bit closer to cartoon/3D animated movies than live-action.
-The wiimote and other similar peripherals which were the most marketed parts of the console IIRC
-The high popularity of Nintendo franchises

So basically, even if weaker than their Sony/Microsoft counterparts, the Wii was still gonna sell anyway. It just ended up suffering from lower sales a bit earlier in its lifespan and prevented some games like Crysis from coming out on it.

Now that competitors also got motion control/sensor type gamepads and stuff such as Kinect and PS Move, they can't rely solely on that anymore and they need either another gimmick or a much more powerful hardware than the Wii. Of course, just as long as it's more powerful than the Wii, it doesn't matter to them if it will be even close to the next Xbox and PS4, because the Wii U will have Mario and Zelda games, boosting its sales considerably.

The Wii U does have a new gimmick. All of nintendo's consoles have had something unique about them, since the N64 anyway. N64 was the first to introduce analog sticks. Gamecube was a cube.

The Wii had its motion controls. And now, the Wii U brings the fancy touchscreen gamepad to the party.

Erm, wasn't the Atari 2600 the first console to have analog sticks?

Also I am unsure if being a cube is a big innovation/difference that is enough to sell a console, but it was surely MUCH smaller than other consoles. I always hated how the Playstation 2 and Xbox were as big as a NES early on.

EDIT Nervermind, the Atari 2600 controller didn't have an analog stick. It was digital it seems (although in joystick form rather than d-pad)

Also I think one main selling point of the GameCube might have been its ridiculously low price compared to its competitors. Only 2 years after its release over here we could get a new one for $129.99 or so. After 2 years here, the Wii was still $279.99.

Offtopic: Do you remember the original Xbox controller? That thing was so big...

. If you had small hands, you had to buy a third-party one that is smaller.

Of course it isn't as bad as in this pic, but they're still 2x bulkier than 360 controllers.

I don't think size matters with a home console. It's not like you need to move it around a lot.

depends. In my case in my living room I got 5 consoles and a stereo system under my TV and because of how large my 360, PS2 and PS3 are I had to put my RetroDuo, Sega Genesis and Wii on the carpet whenever they're not used. If they were all the size of my PS2 slim or wii i could fit everything in.

Offtopic: I got 8 systems and a commodore 64 with a diskdrive to fit under my tv. Most of them are top loaders except for the nes and (big) ps2, so no stacking here. I cannot fit more stuff underneath the tv (and have easy access to it.)

I want to play the wiiU at a friends first, but I don't know people who own one. I will not hook it up to my beloved CRT tv because... you guess.
Just gonna wait until there are some cool metroid games on the system. Other M 2 ft portal (in which mother brain is transferred to a potato)

I'm not buying a WiiU until it drops under $210 or so. And yeah a new Metroid, preferably a platform game, not a FPS, would be nice. They really should do the same thing they did with New Super Mario Bros and do a New Super Metroid or something that is 2D or side-scrolling 3D like the good ol' games.

In my case, I can't put stuff on my 360 because it's apparently very bad for ventilation (RRoD), my PS2, Sega Genesis, Retro Duo are all top-loading and the Wii isn't but it's hard to put anything on a wii.

That said I need to get my TV replaced in a month or two because the one I have doesn't support old console games and a new TV means I'll need new furniture to put it on since what I have right now is barely strong enough to support my current 32 inch TV.

Wind Waker HD is also known as emulation through Dolphin. Thanks to the liberal use of Cel-shading, model quality is less important, and you can get extremely high resolutions, not to mention filtered textures

Ahaha, I remember people making fun of the old Xboxes cause they were gigantic and weighed a ton. The controllers were too big for a lot of kids hands most of the time too.

In regards to the Wii U; it looks like a really cool system, but I have no interest in buying one right now. There are literally zero games launch games that look worth a damn, and it's a crying shame.

So yea, I'm waiting for now. The next game I'm anticipating is the new pokemon game on the 3ds in October, and the Professor Layton/Phoenix Right crossover(if it ever comes out here).

I really want a WiiU, but the main thing (as with many other people I think) is indeed the lack of good launch games (apart from ZombieU and New Super Mario Bros. U) and the fact that it is a little pricy

Though I definitely want Pikmin 3, so when it comes out or if there will be a special combo/limited edtion it'll be in my house in no-time

YEah I like how in emulators you can get higher resolution than original consoles. Some Nintendo 64 games look better that way, although if there are 2D sprites they can look weird and blurry. On the Xbox 360 I remember if you played Xbox games you could get HD resolution too. I wish it was the case with Wii games on the WiiU.
