TI-83 Plus.Fr update: Now with TI-84+SE hardware!
« on: June 21, 2013, 10:32:52 pm »
A few months ago, TI-Planet got to test the new version of the TI-83 Plus.Fr that was supposed to hit stores for next school year. That new version of the TI-83 Plus.Fr was meant to replace the blue model released in 2009 that was a TI-83 Plus with the Français APP installed. At that time, they got a prototype from Texas Instruments that was rather weird: The 2013 version of the calculator was in fact a TI-84 Plus, but inside a case that looked like a blend of the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition and TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition.

Well, they got a new sample of the calculator recently and it appears that the final product will instead be a Silver Edition model!

The original TI-84 Plus Silver Edition was discontinued in 2010 in France and some other European countries. Next school year it will be re-introduced as the TI-83 Plus.Fr. So from now on, here will be the calculator model number equivalents between USA and France:

TI-83 = TI-82 Stats.Fr
TI-83 Plus = TI-83 Plus.Fr (DISCONTINUED)
TI-84 Plus = TI-84 Pocket.Fr
TI-84 Plus Silver Edition = TI-83 Plus.Fr
TI-89 Titanium = TI-89 Titanium (black model)
TI-Nspire CX = DISCONTINUED
TI-Nspire CX CAS = TI-Nspire CX CAS

Why does TI bother to pull this kind of crap? Is it just an excuse to have new models so they can keep the price up?

At least they made an excuse to keep the old B/W models available for those of us who want fast screen draws. :D

Or perhaps the opposite: Revive discontinued models with upgraded hardware but keep the price the same. Or maybe they are trying to phase out non-SE hardware in France (for the Flash models) so that they can release the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition as the only TI-84 Plus model. I wouldn't be surprised if they discontinued the TI-84 Pocket.Fr then renamed the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition as the TI-84 Plus.Fr.

The next thing we'll hear is that TI is releasing a TI-85 Stats.Fr with 96 KB of user RAM and TI-81 Stats with 6 MHz and 28 KB RAM to replace the TI-76.Fr. <_<

That ti-85 fr wouldn't be half bad if they threw in some archive space.

Thank you DJ_O.

I've translated the news to english this morning:
http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12512&lang=en

The TI-84 Plus was allready discontinued in France for back to school 2012:
http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10408

The now more expensive and inferior TI-84 Pocket.fr seems to have disappeared from online stores.
So it might be discontinued in France for back to school 2013.

On both prototype and production model, it's still the TA1 chip:

So only 48KB RAM.

If the Pocket model is discontinued, that would make it the most short-lived model ever released by TI, unless we include every single 83+/84+ color case variations as well (pink, blue, etc). Maybe it will eventually become a collectible on Ebay? :P

They should just have lowered the price of the Pocket model instead of confusing everyone with a "new" model which has the name of an old model and the hardware of another old model.
I own: 83+ ; 84+SE ; 76.fr ; CX CAS ; Prizm ; 84+CSE
Sorry if I answer with something that seems unrelated, English is not my primary language and I might not have understood well. Sorry if I make English mistakes too.

That reminds me, over here, Walmart appears to have marked down the TI-84 Plus from $159.99 to $139.99. Not sure if it's a rebate, though. Staples didn't have them in stock the last time I checked but they were still $142 ish, while the SE was $149.99. The 83+, on the other hand, is still $123-129 everywhere and only BestBuy still have Nspire CX calcs in stock (now at $159.99, down from $199.99). The TI-89T prices are still outrageous at $188.

The Canadian Staples website still appears to have TI-Nspire CAS Touchpad and TI-Nspire CX CAS calcs in stock (which were never sold in their physical stores) at $179.99 and $199.99, but they no longer have the TI-Nspire CX listed (gone from physical stores as well since a few months).

The TI-84 Plus CSE is $179.99, as I expected it to replace the original 84+SE price.

That's exactly what I was thinking, too. Not that I mind. At least now they don't have an excuse to charge extra for the CX CAS.

Not in USA, but in Canada and France yes. Some Best Buy stores still have them, but they're heavily discounted so they're probably trying to get rid of them faster.

All 68K calcs were discontinued in France too IIRC (around 2010), but it's still possible to get them via some online calculator stores that sells imported models. The 84+SE was discontinued in many countries in Europe in 2010 as well. At first they tried to discontinue the 84+SE worldwide, since most TI website versions mentionned that the calc was no longer produced, but as soon as this made a huge ordeal in the TI community, TI removed that notice then changed their mind. Or maybe it was a mistake. It was really crazy that summer. First there was OS 2.1 anti-downgrade, which made Slashdot and caused much controversy, then this http://ourl.ca/7232 , which convinced people that TI was trying to eliminate calculator gaming by blocking the Nspire and discontinuing every calc model that has game support.

That was weird when I saw TI-nspire CX discontinued, but in Canada and France well that make more sense.

Here's a list of discontinued calculators and their replacements:
https://epsstore.ti.com/OA_HTML/csksxvm.jsp?nSetId=92937
Interesting however, that the TI-nspire Clickpad and Clickpad CAS are listed in the current graphing calculators
