Gaming Discussion / Re: Your best video game pickups.
« on: February 10, 2013, 07:45:47 pm »
Wow, the only thing I own is a PS2.
To play most other classic games, I use PC emulators

But now I feel like I'm missing out on something here.
I guess it's like a book.  You can have digital books on an eReader, but there's something about holding a physical book.

I guess having the physical copies of old classic video games is more satisfying than having them as just a ROM file on your computer...

Unless by logo, he is referring to something other than the banner at the top...

I don't really decorate my computers.  Too lazy, haha.

It's what's on the inside that counts  ;)

Oh wow.  I think I misunderstood.  DJ_O said "the logo letters look like Greek letters" which I assumed implied they were not Greek letters. XD

Of course there are some trolls who will pronounce it spinjmaga or something just because the logo letters looks like greek letters, though <_<

The first time I visited this site, I thought the "n" in the banner at the top was a pi symbol, haha.

Yeah, ohm-nee-may-gah was the other way I was thinking about it, but I realized it sounds too much like "omnimega".  So that's why I figured the "ah" sound for the a made more sense.

Miscellaneous / Pronounciation

I was reading the thread about the origins of this forum, and with the word "omnimaga" inevitably appearing in just about every post, I was starting to wonder how it's pronounced.

In my mind, I say it ohm-nee-mah-gah.  Is that right?  Or is there some other pronunciation of it?

haha, exactly.
It's an internet forum dedicated to hacking calculators.
It doesn't really get nerdier than that.

Hi pimathbrainiac, sorry but I already have a nerd friend that knows Java :P

Though having a multitude of nerd friends is, I suppose, better than less.

I'll be careful with that :p
And I plan on sticking around.  There are a lot of intelligent, interesting people here! :D

I feel like I could learn a lot from this community :)
Side note: I like your music!

The TI-83 Plus one looks amazing!
I have some artistic talent; I wonder how this is done though.
The CX CAS one is also extremely cool.  The gold/black looks awesome.

General Calculator Help / Re: Taking Apart a TI-83 Plus?
« on: February 09, 2013, 10:03:09 am »
Yeah, I think it is a ribbon cable problem.  Definitely not software; I've tried all those button combinations as well as random button mashing with no success.

As for the CAS' do you absolutely need one? WOuld a regular TI-Nspire CX do the job? It's allowed at exams, unlike the CAS model, so you could try to get that in exchange.

I guess if repairing the old calculator fails, I'll have to return my CAS and get the plain CX.
I'll also try Sorunome's advice and see if that works.

General Calculator Help / Taking Apart a TI-83 Plus?
« on: February 09, 2013, 12:06:28 am »
Any suggestions how to perform such a task?
What sort of screwdriver would I need to unscrew those screws along the edge of the back of the calculator (the ones that are in really deep holes)?
I think I read somewhere a Torx T4 screwdriver would do the trick?

The screen is messed up and won't work.  When you turn it on, it appears that there is a completely blank screen, but pressing a few random buttons shows random vertical lines and random pieces of characters along these lines.

This actually happened a long time ago, I believe it (may) have been dropped?
The calculator itself is also a few years old.

I had gotten an Nspire CX CAS but have found out it's disallowed from an exam I'm going to need to take at the end of the school year (due to its CAS capabilities).  I don't want to return it, and I don't want to purchase a new $100 graphing calculator for this one exam, so I thought maybe it might be possible to repair my old one.

Yes, 11 bags of peanuts should be enough to last a while.
I just installed ndless today, I'll experiment with it more tomorrow.
I also want to get the hang of TI-BASIC and maybe Lua as well.

I remember when I was like 10 or 11 I would play this online game called ROBLOX, which had in-game Lua scripting support.  I've tried to learn it then, but of course never got past the most basic stuff :p
