Writeback is as handled as simply as just copying back the entire $9D95 area to the program's space, so I guess the same goes for SMC. DCS does it more "intelligently". (that means: check if anything has changed, for "garbage collection" purposes)

EDIT: @Seren: MOS programs are STILL copied from archive to the 9D95 area, they don't run from archive, so there's no problem in using SMC/writeback.

It's part of the LCD chipset. It'd cost more to remove it.

I think it was his own. (I remember trying (and failing) to run it, but I'm not sure whether that was the compiler or the packager, whatever...)

EDIT: It is. I checked. (at least it's not Microsoft's)

LCD test mode is obtained by sending the byte $1F (there are a few other valid ones, though) to the screen command port (10h). It causes an excessive amount of energy to be sent to the LCD, which makes the crystals turn blue. Not healthy...

Mode+Alpha+S is merely a self-test to check if everything works properly.

Grayscale in ASM is flickery too/slows down if not done well.

@Jon: I'd like to help you out, but I never actually worked on my gfx coding skills, plus I haven't been having that much time lately.

Complex/real hardly makes any difference, you only save a VAT entry and you sacrifice speed.
