[OTcalc] Z80-Hardware / Re: [OTZ80] [Poll] Do you want a backlit screen?
« on: August 29, 2010, 03:20:52 pm »
I think flourescents are worth noting. LCD monitors use them, not EL. they have a prism and a strangely focused fresnel lens to spread it perfectly across the screen. very expensive, VERY bright and very hot, but very nice. Also requires a special power supply.

LED and EL are the two we will probably be using though, as flourescents aren't very suited to carrying around. They are a valid type of backlight though.

Chip's Challenge for Ti-Nspire / Re: Chips Challenge for TI-Nspire

Ooooh! That was one of my favorite games ever. I saw it on the PC first, then found it on the calc a few years ago. If it looks as good as nspire block dude, I'm sure it will be awesome :)

Why not have hardware greyscale? Basically, it is the same thing we do with software grey, but the LCD Hardware Controller outputs lower and higher voltages, using Pulse Width Modulation (basically, the only way for digital stuff to do analog output) and that is exactly what we do with software Grey, except that the controller can do it much faster. Combining hardware and software can get you around 64-level greyscale with a fast calc.

Other Calculators / TI-Cares flood of suggestions.
« on: August 23, 2010, 12:01:54 am »
I have an idea. If you send a suggestion to TI-cares, they will usually send it to the Research and Dev team. However, they will probably ignore only one or two requests. Why not have a whole bunch of people send one (only one, don't want it to look like spam) request for asm on the nspire? if we get enough people, perhaps we could convince them to change their minds.

You can't buy 1G cards anymore, and sdhc doesn't take any more than reg sd. Make it sdhc or people will hate it, if you have SD at all. SDHC will not take any more effort, software or hardware wise.

Wow...75 pages.

I was wondering: is there a good way to easily get less flickery gray? it bugs me that I can't just type in Pt-On( and Pt-On()r and see some smooth gray! I wouldn't mind typing more, but I don't know what to type :P

[OTcalc] ARM-Software / Re: OTARM Firmware Discussion
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:17:59 pm »
Unfortunately, ext* will require the PC that you hook to to support ext* which is not an easy filesystem for windows. There is an ext2/3 reader for windows, but ext4 is incompatible

Fat32 would be much easier, as it has much broader support. Ext3/4 might work for a main File System, if we don't plan on doing direct linking (just through SD swapping instead)

I think, Desktop-wise, we should have the calculator by default run a math desktop (very simple, nothing fancy) and for users who want a real desktop, offer support and give an easy package to install, say, xfce or some other lightweight desktop. KDE and Gnome will probably be too much for the OTArm. We should still have terminal access, even if it is rather buried.

Don't give root access easily! make it so the average user can do what they want, while making the root password only really available to those who know what they are doing. People who don't know what root means shouldn't notice that it is required for anything either.

On a side note, OmniTech is a brand name for flash drives. I saw some at staples. :P Also, 3 other companies show up on google. Maybe we could change it to something more unique, or maybe leave it at omnimaga Calculators!

TI-Nspire / Re: TI-89 emulator for TI-Nspire
« on: August 20, 2010, 08:58:31 pm »
Yeah. It's really only legal in that you own said calculator/game/whatever in any form. You could have a CD snapped in half, a calc that drowned, or a fried atari, and it would then be legal to download/own the rom.

So, emus are perfectly fine to develop, and have legitimate reasons to do so. Who wants to carry an atari around when you can just use your ds? Who wants to carry two calcs at the same time?
