You know, depending how much power draw 50 mhz actually draws, battery may not be an issue. You're assuming it will cut the power usage in half, while that may not actually be true. Besides, if the calc runs >20 hrs on 50 and >30 on 20 mhz, is it really worth the sacrifice? You're already getting a ridiculous amount of time!

A lot of people, it seems, think higher resolution means bigger screen. We've had lcds that are the same size as the 84+, but much higher resolution for years, more than double, even since the GB.

you know, an emulator wouldn't be so illegal. We can't provide it with the OS, but it's not like everyone will want it, only those who want the compatibility. The only people who will care about compatibility will know how calculator games will work, and can get ahold of their own rom, along with the emu, say, from ticalc.org.

as for keypads, are we going the Alpha-lock route, or the separate buttons? Heck, I'm fine with either configuration, it would just be nice to know which.

3D may be a tad unrealistic, how about a built-in raycaster?

i always liked the variable management of the 86. It was very C-like. You could have a variable up to 8 letters long, and you wouldn't need to call it, for example "prgmVAR", you could just use it as VAR instead. That way, if you needed to switch the variable type you were using, it would be less work.

EDIT: @DJ

What about having a programming language, (game oriented) and a function creator? The function creator would be very similar to the nspire's language, simple to use and very similar to the home screen. The game creator would be much more complicated, function-wise.

Does everyone use the same rickroll url? That would explain why one has 30 million while another has 700,000? :P

Will we be able to see the difference between 64-level and 256-level?

Especially on the nspire's screen :P not to discourage.

Sounds like the nspire :P Not saying it's bad, just reminds me of it. we can't do that standby thing though. Probably just store a var in memory to restore the page.

At my school, I have a friend who got very lucky.

He had to make up some citizenship grades with service hours, so he helped the math teachers move (school remodeled) and they had 20 ti-82s, 2 ti-presenters and 3 ti-83+s they just gave to him!

he gave me one of the presenters though :P. I don't have a calc for them though.

I think compiling should be implemented very visibly, so it's obvious that you can speed up your programs very easily.

Also, any chance for syntax highlighting and bolding? We'll be using a greyscale screen, right? I figure we'll have quite a bit of room for fancier effects like that.

Cool! I like the theme too!

May I recommend different selections for graphing and calculation? just a thought.

I think you should update the main page to point to the forums. Currently they still say "still being set up"

[OTcalc] ARM-Hardware / Re: Options for ARM calc.

SDHC is actually just SD with slightly different addressing. Open-source devices can be modified to use sdhc, albeit slower than intended, and closed source devices can be patched by who made them (ie the wii.) I still vote regular SD cards myself, they're so much cheaper and more convenient (you don't break or lose them as much.) a 4GB SD costs the same as a 2GB MicroSD

Why not just have a separate link port? We could even use the USB. It's not like we'll be crying out for space. We will have room for more than one port.

That's what I was thinking, but also have an adapter for TI calcs

wait a second, weren't we going to have built in speakers? They will need a dedicated headphones port, period. Preferably a volume knob too.

But no rectangular pixels! That was the only bad thing about the 86!

Yes: Micro SD card support  I would like regular SD actually
Yes: Backlight for the LCD - well, if we use a lithium battery, backlight is a bit much for AAs
Yes: mini-USB    - OTG too. Host and slave in the same plug.
Yes: 3.5 mm link port    - this + a cable for 3.5-2.5mm for ti compatibility
No: no touchscreen    - No touchscreen for testing (ACT and SAT both forbid)
No: AA batteries    - longer, cheaper, better
Yes: Built in charging option    - For ARM, it's much better. You can get upwards of 12 hours on a good device

About the whole software issue, why not just have it act like a FAT32 Flash drive? We've been trying to do that to our 84s for years. :P Just have a file hierarchy something like this:

/boot (for bootloaders, or just an OS)
/sys (for hardware drivers, OS programs)
/usr (for the good stuff)

Or we could make it so that the Flash drive only gives access to the /usr and up, unless you enable a certain setting on the calc. that way, normal users don't screw up their calc because "hey, I didn't put this on there! Deleted!"

Whatever screen size we use, can it be a widescreen-style design? This fits much better for games, graphs + calculations, and better for calc button space (assuming we use the vertical rectangle)

Just my opinions.

[OTcalc] Z80-Hardware / Re: VOTE: CPU for OTZ80 - eZ80 20 MHz or 50 MHz?
« on: August 07, 2010, 10:20:59 pm »
I'm voting 20. Those who want a fast calc can get the ARM version. Heck, those who want a faster calc than an 84+ can still use the 20. Of course, if the power consumption with the 50 is still about a 10+ hour life, I don't see much point in going for the 20.

And yeah, AA's FTW.
