I thought government papers were supposed to be intelligent. (If only) Now they are blaming cyberbullying, which happens to
Quote from: Stupid Politicians
Forty-two percent of kids
for
Quote from: even stupider politicians
blamed for nearly a dozen teen suicides
Oh no!!! out of the forty percent of kids that are cyberbullied,
not even twelve have committed suicide because of it!!!
Not only is that a disproportionately small number to be statistically reliable, but almost all of those children probably were to mentally unstable to be on the internet in the first place. They would have committed suicide if they never touched the internet.

Besides using unreliable and flimsy statistical data, it sounds like it was written by a ten year old. Here are some highlights:
Quote from: Ten year old politician
AS ONE AUTHOR SO CLEVERLY NOTED:
Quote from: Uh... severe typo alrt
parents claim was yeas of bullying...
Quote from: Politician using highly informal language
GOES WAY BEYOND...
Quote from: Politician that sounds no better than my persuasive essay from fourth grade
FOR ONE, CYBERBULLYING HAS NO...
Quote from: Overly dramatic politician
THE TIME FOR LEGISLATIVE ACTION IS NOW.  THE TIME FOR GREATER
AWARENESS IS NOW.

This essay has no more refined language than anything you could find in a ten year old's papaer for school. I honestly do not think this "man" (I think it is actually a ten year old) has any position in politics. We need to weed out the dumb ones. THE TIME FOR GREATER AWARENESS IS NOW.

Small numbers seem to have some sort of theme in life.  I remember how people started calling the Swine Flu an "epidemic" after it killed something like 5 out of a population of a few million...

And I wonder what difference they thought it would make using all caps, lol

That's getting into a bit of a touchy subject, but you do have a point. They may have been mentally unstable. I'd like to see the relationship between IRL bullying suicides and Cyberbullying ones. All in all, its not all that big a deal. Teachers need to learn the warning signs of dangerous levels of bullying and parents need to learn how to better raise their children, because that's precisely where it all originates.

Spoiler For IMPORTANT NEWS!:
Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

I believe I understand the point you were trying to make, but I found this comment rather offensive, considering my sister has bipolar. She seems to be OK now, but she was fairly unstable a while back, and was bullied at her old middle school.

H1N1 was huge though.  I had a sever case and it was extremely bad.
A couple of points.
* It was a killer, but as all countries were more prepared, few died.
* It caught quickly, spread quickly, and affected quickly.  Thus hospitals were in serious trouble.
* The only reason it didn't seem as bad as it was made out to be is because it affected people fast enough that they didn't have much time to spread it.

Yeah, maybe I went too far...
Few people have the guts to say that.  I find that admirable.

One thing to keep in mind though is that with cyberbullying it's easier to avoid it than regular bullying IRL. At least online, if you run into a cyberbully you can simply close the browser tab then go elsewhere or block him, without any fear of IRL retaliation. IRL, the bully is in front of you, and you can't just go back, as he'll just follow you. The problem with cyberbullying is when someone is also bullied a lot IRL or some things prevents him from meeting any decent people and getting a social life outside the internet. In my case for example all I got as people I can consider as friend in real life is one single person. The others are people I prefer to not hang out with regularly, because they're not very trustable and they do not respect others that much.

I don't see what the issue is, all he did was state statistics.

While he did state statistics, he also made a generalization about mentally unstable people. My sister was very unstable at one point, we had to admit her to a hospital twice, and I was very worried she would hurt herself. I may have overreacted slightly, but I don't appreciate people making generalizations about those with mental instabilities, because of everything I saw my sister go through.

whoa whoa whoa, I'M narrow minded?

It just makes sense, if you're going to commit suicide because someone was mean to you online, you sort of HAVE to be mentally unstable if you couldn't figure out getting offline. I suppose you could say you didn't like his tone, but it kind of sounds like a personal problem, because frankly there was no real generalization when the numbers are present and the test case is less than twelve.
