Favorite Linux distro
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:43:52 am »
I am trying to figure out what linux distros I like best so I wan to know whats most popular so I can try them out. I also think it would be good to see what the popular distrobutions in a community like this are. I know ubuntu and mint are nearly the same thing(imo mint is better)

I voted linux mint because so far thats all I've used
I currently don't do much, but I am a developer for a game you should totally try out called AssaultCube Reloaded download here https://assaultcuber.codeplex.com/

I voted ubuntu for a few reasons
1. it's the most popular
2. it's the only one i've used
3. it's one of the most userfriendly
4. lots of support (because it's the most popular)

I heard linux mint is very user-friendly too

2nd most popular is fedora, 3rd openSUSE

[07:54:33] <+Frey> Some are into the whole "scare the locals" bit
[07:54:54] <+Frey> And some just absent minded

[08:03:13] <+Frey> Ok, so one day, I was walking to the school bus, and, long story short, got my life saved by an angel
[08:03:27] <+Frey> This one was a scary one
[08:03:42] <+Frey> Same height/age as me
[08:04:14] <+Frey> OMG She was the scariest person I had ever met

[08:05:45] <+Frey> After a muchness of arguing, I finally got through to her

[08:06:06] <+OmnomIRC> (O)<aeTIos> idk
[08:06:09] <+Frey> She tap danced outside my stall the entire time, though
[08:10:04] <+Frey> She was in all my classes too, which was weird, especially as they were all advanced courses and she joined in the middle of the semester
[08:10:28] <+Frey> Even the teachers were scared of her
[08:10:45] <+Frey> Note that she was gorgeous
[08:12:09] <+Frey> So, this angel and I, we managed to stop the apocalypse
[08:12:48] <+Frey> And she kissed me before going back,
[08:13:08] <+Frey> To heaven, but as it turns out that kiss sealed her to Earth

Fedora for me!

Here's why:

-I found it very easy to pick up without ever using Linux before: it has useful GUI tools to do simple tasks but doesn't limit your ability to do anything using a terminal.
-I like it's package management system (yum, specificially, built on top of rpm) to be much easier to use and much more powerful than apt-get, which I have actually used (on Knoppix, which is a mobile version of Debian). That's just my opinion, obviously.

The userbars in my sig are links embedded links.

And in addition to calculator (and Python!) stuff, I mod Civilization 4 (frequently with Python).

Arch all the way for me. If you're enough advanced in the usage of one of the more friendly distros (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora) and you want some challenge, Arch Linux is for you. When installing it, you start with the bare minimum, then you only have to add the packages you want, resulting in a distro tweaked and customized as you wish. Also, Arch is a rolling release, meaning you always have the most recent packages when they get released, you don't have to wait for, say, Ubuntu's next release to get a package's next version. And the package manager, conveniently named Pacman, is simple but powerful to use and you have access to an user-contributed repository, AUR, though a 3rd-party wrapper to Pacman.

tl;dr it's the best if you know Linux and you want a distro between Ubuntu and Gentoo.

Remember the day the walrus started to fly...

I finally cleared my sig after 4 years you're happy now?

Its probably the last version of Ubuntu that people don't like. Ubuntu 11.04 switched to another shell, which makes that the look is totally different, and many people don't like this. Also, the new shell isn't fully finished, and lacks some features that were in the old one. However, many people tend to forget that you can very easily switch back to the old shell, with just 2 clicks when logging in.
