Confirmed: No TI-84 Plus Keypad on the TI-Nspire CX
« on: March 04, 2011, 03:42:43 pm »
After trying twice before, I finally received this e-mail from Texas Instruments:

Quote
Danny,

Thank you for contacting Texas Instruments.

We appreciate your interest in our new TI-Nspire CX technology. Since the CX handhelds do not have a removable keypad, the TI-84 Plus keypad cannot be used with a TI-Nspire CX handheld. I regret any inconvenience this may cause you.

Another resource you can use to find answers to your questions, example calculations and other information is our Knowledge Base. The Knowledge Base is accessible to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I hope that you find this information helpful. If you have further questions or comments, please feel free to send me an email.

Warmest Regards,

Doug Fincher

An interesting point.  TI never states that TI-84+ emulation will be removed, just that the keypad will not be supported.

What can we get from this?  I assume this means that the new OS updates will still include the 84 Plus emulation, as it will still be usable on the older models, but since the keypad will not be compatible with the CX, the emulation itself will not work there.  Might there be a way to activate the emulator to make it work?  One major problem to this would be that since the 84 keypad is not specifically compatible with the CX, I doubt that the emulation would be updated to support the new color screen.  We can only hope that the 84 emulation might still continue on the CX, as if it does not, it will be a major blow to both the Nspire Program Library and the TI-84 Plus series. :(

This is bad, the OS will have ti.84+ files but we can't use them, waste of space.

Well, we can't confirm that from that e-mail, but I would say that would be the logical guess (unless the CX and regular Nspire have different OS files...).

It's likely that the OS files are different... The Nspire and Nspire CAS OSes are different - the CAS OS doesn't include the 84+ emulator.

TI just said you couldn't use the TI-84+ keypad - maybe they'll make the emulator accessible with the normal TI-Nspire CX keypad. It has more keys than the TI-84+, so they would just have to make a simple key mapping.

Yeah, but I'd think that would be really messy :/
I'd prefer to use a normal 84 keypad on an 84 be it an emulator or the actual thing, not some mismatched mapped keypad.

Shouldn't be any moreso than using a TI-83+/84+ emulator on the PC. It's confusing at first but you get used to it.

It could definitively be useable on the other keypad but it might be weird. Personally I think it might remain present under OS 3.0 Click/Touchpad, but

Regardless, this sucks, because a lot of TI-Nspire users play 84+ games.

Also what's bad with that is that some Nspire future buyers might not read the package or might be misinformed and think the CX has 84+ emulation and buy it instead of the other ones, so they'll kinda be ripped.

If you have people at your school thinking about getting a TI-Nspire, make sure to warn them.

That said, I'M fairly certain someone will write a z80 emulator for it. Maybe calc84maniac could eventually restart his?

Experienced TI-Z80 users would hate a remapped, scrambled keyboard, because "finger feel" is just too powerful :)

what exactly is the problem with no 84+ support? the c and asm hacks on the nspire are far superior to the programming languages on the 84+...

Danny,

Thank you for your reply.

I apologize if my previous e-mail was not clear. No, there is not a way to emulate the TI-84 Plus calculator using the TI-Nspire CX handheld.

Warmest Regards,

Doug Fincher

There are incredibly many programs and games written for the 84+ already. We can't just port all of them to Ndless, so we have to emulate them...

That's too bad.
I hope an emulator comes out eventually. :)

Apcalc, I changed that "code" tag to a "quote" tag as it was messing with the front page.  I hope you don't mind. ;)
