gCn via USB soon to be a reality, also Pi
« on: March 15, 2011, 11:07:14 pm »
As this Cemetech news article states, gCn via direct USB is not far from finished. Soon we wont have to have an Arduino microcontroller board or a custom AVR USBHID bridge to connect to the internet via gcn.

In other news, happy belated Pi day :D

Note that this development is for the 84+(SE) only, not the ones without the USB ports ;)
Great progress Kerm and others!

Of course, maybe even later he will work on a silverlink version too :P I'm just hoping though :)

OMG! I thought it was still in the discussion/planning process O.O. I was skimming through the topic sometimes but I don't understand much, so I wasn't sure. I hope this works with the TI-Nspire, because it's certain I'm gonna try this at one point.

Also yeah happy pi day in advance, although for French people we still have until July 22nd. :P

They have been working on it for the last two days I believe. I'm not sure it will work on the nspire though due to the usb being locked out of the 84+ emulator.

oh really? :P
03/14 was yesterday for me, so it's already over for me :(

Will this be possible without using an ardiuno?

That's the point of USB support. It bypasses the arduino, but can only link one calc to gCn

I had no idea this would come so quickly!  Soon I can be able to play obliterate with many people! :)

That's the entire idea :D Using your 84+(SE) with a directlink cable and some software to use gCn!
Edit: Ninja'd :P (This is what I get for not completing a post as soon as I start...)

Just to clear things up a Silverlink version is nigh impossible as the Silverlink speaks TI's OI protocol and CalcNet is an entirely different beast. Its like trying to Japanese to a Frenchman, it just doesn't work. Kerm could send calcnet packets via TI's protocol but it would require more PC side code and be a mess to handle.

Aw, right, I understand about the USB. Oh well... fortunately I got a Staples store nearby, I'll just go get a 84+ there instead of waiting an entire month to get one shipped online. :P

I'll still test on a TI-Nspire regardless, though.

Well that's awesome, but I'm sorry to hear it's nearly impossible with the Silverlink like the one I have... I thought it would be like a serial port, you send stuff and the calc recieves it as is, and vice-versa?

Remember the day the walrus started to fly...

I finally cleared my sig after 4 years you're happy now?

TI's protocol and CALCnet's protocol for MAC and PHY (the lowest communication layers) are different. Wrapping CALCnet frames in TI's protocol, as understood and generated by the SilverLink, is doable - but pointless.
Besides, the SilverLink and CALCnet are using the same hardware port on the calculator, so it's hard to use the SilverLink as a gCn bridge :)
(well, one could always use a 84+ doing the CALCnet/USB bridge, and a 84+ doing the USB/SilverLink bridge, but, er, an Arduino-based solution is much cheaper, easier and more reliable !)

aeTIos, as soon as all the bugs can get worked out, hopefully in the next week or two.
