Reflash your Nspire Boot2 without RS232!!!
« on: March 15, 2012, 03:06:45 am »
We did it again again!!!

As it is of some use to upgrade development Nspire handhelds (prototypes) into production ones, Bsl as a developer and me as a tester have released Boot2Flasher, a tool similar to the DiagsFlasher we released in a previous news.

No need to deal with an RS232 interface anymore! By just pressing a single key you can freely upgrade/downgrade your Boot2, flash a production Boot2 on prototypes, flash a development Boot2 on production models, flash a Boot2 from another model, flash a modified Boot2, flash a 3rd-party Boot2... Possibilities are endless! ;D

Of course, be sure of what you are doing, because if your Boot1 does reject your Boot2, you'll end up needing the RS232 interface!...

Tested on more than 20 calculators without a single bricking.

For example, Nspire TouchPad handhelds come with Boot2 1.4. Here is  one I've downgraded to Boot2 1.1:

For now, you can only use it on ClickPad/TouchPad Nspire with OS 1.7 or 2.0.1 (Ndless 2.0).
An update will be needed for Ndless 3.1 and CX calculators, but the hard part of the work is done :)

Does this mean users of black-and-white Nspires can downgrade their OS back to 2.x and 1.x if they want to?

Cool! Ofc, this won't work on CXs.

Cool! Ofc, this won't work on CXs.

It won't work on CX until the code is adapted (the dialog box function needs to be replaced, the boot2 size and offset need to be changed, and the write_nand sycall address needs to be found in both 3.1 CX OSes).

But it won't help you downgrading a CX to 1.X/2.X as those versions are incompatible with the CX hardware.

It'll just help you switching between CX 3.0.1/3.0.2/3.1.0 Boot2 versions easily.

Woohoo! This I suspect has been one of the big problems here that TI has tricked so many people into calcs that can't downgrade. Now they can if something goes wrong, there is an alternative course of action.

btw, does this tool have a name? Is it a new version of nleash or something else?
Edit: It's called boot2flasher, of course.

I wonder if it's possible to load the boot files from a CAS onto a non-CAS TI-Nspire with this.

CAS and non-CAS are sharing the same Boot2.

I wonder then, just out of curiosity, what is it that differentiates the two as CAS/non-CAS on the calculators themselves? I don't know too much technical information about the insides of the Nspire. Probably the most advanced thing I ever did with them was to dump the entire character map in BASIC to find "hidden" characters.

There's (assumed to be) a small ROM chip inside the AISC that holds the model type info.
